  • The fuel storage vessel installed in CNG vehicles can be largely divided into 3 parts: head, cylinder, and dome. Studies of the cylinder and dome parts have already been performed, but sufficient design data is not available about the head part. Therefore, expert field engineers heavily depend upon trial-and-error methods. Therefore, FE analysis is performed to review the hot spinning process for forming the head part of the CNG vessel using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The effects of forming factors on the load were analyzed. The values of the factors were chosen to avoid defects in the head part and buckling, and the forming feasibility of the head part was investigated. Furthermore, a bursting test was performed to evaluate the safety of the storage vessel.

  • Cold-air drainage and pooling occur in most mountain valleys at night. Local climates with cold-air pooling could affect phenology and distribution of crop plants. A high resolution infrared imaging radiometer was used to visualize the cold-air drainage and thermal belt formation over a small mountainous watershed (ca. $10{\times}5{\times}1$ km for the maximum length${\times}$width${\times}$depth). Thermal images on $640{\times}480$ pixels were scanned across the Akyang valley (south of Mt. Jiri National Park) by the radiometer installed at a local peak ('Hyongjebong', 1,117 m a.s.l.) at dawn of 17 May 2011, when the synoptic condition was favorable for the surface cooling and cold-air drainage. Major findings are: (1) Cold-air drainage and accumulation was clearly identified by the lowest brightness temperature mainly at the valley bottom. (2) So-called 'thermal belt' with higher brightness temperature was found partway up the valley sidewalls and showed up to $5^{\circ}C$ departure from the valley bottom temperature. (3) Digital thermography showed feasibility for validation of the high definition geospatial temperature models currently in use for the plot-specific agrometeorological service.

  • This study is based upon the thermal modeling, analysis and operational results of KITSAT-1 and KITSAT-2 microsatellites launched on August 11, 1992 and Septermber 26, 1993, respectively. As KITSAT-1/2 was designed to be launched as an auxiliary payload of ARIANE launcher, the constraints on volume, power consumption, and mass were required to adopt passive thermal control method controlling absorptivity, emissivity, and conductivities among adjacent modules. The main of KITSAT was to take Earth images using CCD cameras positioned at the bottom of spacecraft, in which the cameras were always pointing to the center of Earth. This study is concerned with orbital analysis, thermal modeling, simulation results, and its verification by utilizing in-orbit telemetry data of KITSAT-2. The results of telemetry analysis show that the thermal modeling is matched to actual temperature data within 10 degrees of error range in average.

  • In this study, the history of Korean traditional Ondol was investigated and the latent heat materials and bioceramics were selected to develop the latent heat storage-bioceramics Ondol system based on the Korean traditional Ondol(sensible heat storage type), and the thermal characteristics of Ondol were analyzed experimentally The results could be summarized as follows; 1. Korean traditional Ondol has been originated in "Whaduk" which had been utilized continuously for about $2{\times}10^6$ years from the Old Stone Age to the Bronze Age, and Korean traditional Ondol using in these days has been utilized for about 976 years from the Koryu Dynasty to the Modern Ages. 2. $Na_2SO_4{\cdot}10H_2O(SSD)$ was selected as latent heat material for the latent heat storage Ondol. 3. Ondol unit was filled with the latent heat material of 0.63 kg and the dimension of Ondol unit was $400mm{\times}400mm{\times}27mm(width{\t\imes}depth{\times}height)$. 4. The comfortable surface temperature($23{\sim}29^{\circ}C$) of the latent heat storage Ondol was lasted 5 hours at the room temperature of $16{\sim}18^{\circ}C$, whereas that of sensible heat storage Ondol was lasted only 1.0 hours in the same conditions. 5. For the thermal effect of bioceramics, the Ondol air temperature i.n case of bioceramics treatment on the pannel was higher than that of without bioceramics treatment.

  • This study was aimed to propose La(III)-zeolite composite which can effectively and simultaneously remove ammonia and phosphate in confined water bodies such as lakes and ponds. The optimum ratio of La(III):zeolite for the simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate was 0.0048 La(III) g:1 zeolite g. The drying temperature of La(III)-zeolite composite severely affected phosphate adsorption showing optimum condition at room temperature. It was revealed that the optimum dosage of La(III)-zeolite composite was 4.052 g/L at adsorption time of 90 min. The presence of alkalinity in aqueous solution brought positive effect on phosphate adsorption. Detachment of La(III) from La(III)-zeolite composite, which was dried at room temperature, was not observed in aquous solution. It indicates that La(III)-zeolite composite could effectively block phosphate released from sediment.

  • We have investigated the lasing characteristics of GaAs-based 1300 nm wavelength region InAs Quantum Dot Laser Diode grown by Migration Enhanced Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Under a pulsed and CW operation, we observed the state switching of lasing wavelength from ground state (1302 nm) to excited state (1206 nm) due to the gain saturation of ground state. Under a pulsed operation, $J_{th}=92A/cm^2$, $\lambda_L=1311\;nm$ and under a CW operation, $J_{th}=247A/cm^2$, $\lambda_L=1320\;nm$.

  • Latent heat storage system using micro-encapsuled phase change material is effective method for floor heating of house and building. The temperature profile in capsule block and flow rate of hot water are important parameters for the development of heat storage system. In the present study, a mathematical model based on 3-D, non-steady state, Navier-Stokes equations, scalar conservation equations and turbulence model ($\kappa$-$\varepsilon$), is used to predict the temperature profiles in capsule and the velocity vectors in hot water pipe. The multi-block grids and fine grids embedding are used to join the circle in hot water pipe and square in capsule block. The phase change process of the capsule is quite complex not only because the size of phase change material is very small, but also because phase change material is mixed with the cement to form thermal storage block. In calculation, it's assumed that the phenomena of phase change is limited only the thermal properties of phase change material and the change of boundary is not happened in capsule. The purpose of this study is to calculate the temperature profiles in capsule block and velocity vectors in hot water pipe using the numerical calculation. Two kinds of thermal boundary condition were considered, the first (case 1) is the adiabatic condition for the both outside surfaces of the wall, the second (case 2) is the case in which one surface is natural convection with atmosphere and another surface is adaibatic. Calculation results are shown that the temperature profile in capsule block for case 1 is higher than that for case 2 due to less heat loss in adaibatic surface. Specially, in the domain of near Y=0, the difference of temperature is greater in case 1 than in case 2. The detailed experimental data of capsule block on the temperature profile and the thermal properties such as specific heat and coefficient of heat transfer with the various temperature are required to predict more exact phenomena of heat transfer.

  • Chambers in a continuous furnace were designed. A chamber consists of inlets and outlets of nitrogen gas which is used to discharge burned gas and heating pipes (HP) which are used to keep temperature of fired materials at $1,300^{\circ}C$. Design variables were numbers of inlets and outlets, distance between floor and lower HP ($h_1$), distance between lower HP and fired materials ($h_2$), distance between fired materials and upper HP ($h_3$), temperature of HP, numbers of HP and distance between HP. The numbers of inlets and outlets were determined so that nitrogen gas formed a laminar flow for efficient discharge. All other design variables were determined so that temperature of fired materials is as uniform as possible near $1,300^{\circ}C$. Chambers were produced and temperature was measured at 21 points using thermocouples. The largest deviation from $1,300^{\circ}C$ was less than ${\pm}2.2^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper is to develop analytical techniques of flammable liquids which have been used for accelerating fire in accidental fires and arsons. We tested the temperature distribution of ceiling, fire patterns on the floor, and existence of flammable liquids and a check with GC/MS about flammable liquids comparing with papers, newspapers, and clothing. Research findings are as follows. The temperature of ceiling is influenced by flame. So gasoline and thinner was observed that combustible materials would be burned by flame. The fire patten on the floor was observed that flammable liquids had specialized pattern comparing combustible materials. When combustible materials on the PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) floor was burned, they didn't react to the gas detector. But flammable liquids had opposite results. After 7 days, we identified components of fire residues with the GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) about existence of flammable liquids and got components of flammable liquids. Fire investigation is a complicated processes. But we understand characteristics of materials, need detail investigations, and use the GC/MS to analyse flammable materials.

  • The objective of this research is to study on the upper layer temperature, interface height and flow regime in case of several furniture fires such as trashcan, chair, carpet, sofa, mattress and wardrobe as a fire starter in a residential room by performing the experimental studies. The upper layer temperature and the Interface height were relatively well agreed with the experimental results when the flow coefficient at the opening was 0.65-0.8 for the rectangular trashcan, 0.65-0.9 for the circular trashcan and chair, and 0.7-0.9 for the carpet, sofa, mattress and wardrobe. The interface heights for the seven furniture fires were around 1[m] maintaining steady state. However, at the time of the maximum temperature, the interface height was lowered to 0.25[m]-0.75[m] from the floor. The flow regime at the opening was filling and buoyant for the distributed fire, and for the concentrated fire it was filling and then quickly changed to flow, and the flow period was long. The descending speed of the interface height was proportioned to the inflammability of the furniture and the contact surface area with air. The time required to come down around 1[m] was within 1-3 minutes.
