This study was to investigate which predictors influenced the wish to undergo cosmetic surgery according to experience of cosmetic surgery in female college students. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used with self-report questionnaires, which were completed by 254 subjects. Data was analyzed with t-test and regression. There were statistically significant differences in acceptance and social motivation of cosmetic surgery and the wish to undergo cosmetic surgery in the future between the two groups. Body area satisfaction and acceptance of cosmetic surgery were significant predictors to the wish to undergo cosmetic surgery in the non-experienced group. The significant predictor of the wish to undergo cosmetic surgery for the experienced group was acceptance of cosmetic surgery. The findings from this study suggest that there is need to different approaches to discuss or council for wish to undergo cosmetic surgery according to individual cosmetic surgery experience.
The purpose of this study was to examine influencing factors on plastic surgery addiction tendency. The participants, 223 undergraduate women, completed the ACSS, SATAQ, and MBSRQ. Data were collected from May, 2014 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, ANOVA, logistic regression analysis. Each of variables related to plastic surgery were analyzed between positive expectation group, addiction risk group, or addiction group compared to stable group. The prevalences of stable, positive expectation, addiction risk, and addiction group were 21.1%, 35.0%, 32.7%, and 11.2%, respectively. 45.7% had at least one personal plastic surgery. Personal experience of plastic surgery, high levels of ACSS (Consider), high levels of SATAQ (Internalization), and high levels of MBSRQ (Appearance Evaluation) were all associated with plastic surgery addiction tendency. The results of this study suggest that prevention of early plastic surgery, sociocultural influence and body image disturbances as well as safe guidance for plastic surgery are important in preventing the plastic surgery addiction.
The purpose of this study was to investigate appearance concern, attitude toward cosmetic surgery, self-esteem, quality of life, and to identify affecting factors of quality of life on elderly women. The subjects consisted of 162 elderly women in the G city. The variables were measured using questionnaires, analyzed using descriptive statistic, ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The appearance concern, attitude toward cosmetic surgery were not significant difference in 60s and 70s. Quality of life was significant difference in 60s and 70s. Factors influencing quality of life in 60s were self-esteem, perceived health status, and explanation of quality of life is 39.1%. In 70s were self-esteem, level of education, and explanation of quality of life is 41.7%. These results suggest that it is necessary for aging preparation education included appearance concern and should be made to develop program to improve quality of life.
The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the level of cosmetic surgery experience, perception of side effects, self-esteem, acceptance of cosmetic surgery (ACS) and to explore factors affecting ACS among undergraduate students. A convenience sample of 255 students from three universities completed a self-administered questionnaire from May, 25, 2016 to May, 31, 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression. As a results, 11.5% of students had at least one cosmetic surgery and the majority of them had blepharoplasty. A total of 86.3% of students had heard of cosmetic surgery side effects and the most common source of information were TV, newspapers, magazines and internet. ACS was significantly different by gender, school year, perception of side effects, and cosmetic surgery experience. ACS and self-esteem showed a negative correlation. Previous experience of cosmetic surgery, self-esteem, school year, and gender were identified as influencing factors on ACS which explained 19.0% of total variance. In conclusion, to help college students make rational decisions on cosmetic surgery, provision of sufficient information, improvement of self-esteem, and introduction of gender and school year based intervention are recommended.
The concern over beauty is increasing as the importance of appearance is becoming more prominent. Accordingly, the importance of studying beauty is now apparent. The purpose of this study is to analyze existing beauty-related research in order to assess current trends in beauty-related studies. Materials were collected from the master's theses and academic journals from 1997 through 2016. In addition, 81 beauty-related papers were selected and classified into 3 categories according to their subjects and content. There were 19 hair attitude papers, 52 papers about make-up and skincare, and 10 papers on cosmetic surgery. Each type was divided into detailed themes according to the study theme and its number was grasped. Consequently it was classified into 9 themes about the attitude toward hair and the relevant variable study, 10 themes about the attitude toward hair style and relevant variable study, 24 themes about the make-up attitude and relevant variable study, 28 themes about the skin care attitude and relevant variable study, and 10 themes about the cosmetic surgery attitude and relevant variable study. The results revealed that academic concern about beauty sharply increased starting in 2005. Moreover, we determined that the methodologies used in hair and make-up studies were sound and detailed, while cosmetic surgery studies were more inconsistent and poorly analyzed. Thus cosmetic surgery should be further researched in a more standardized and thorough manner. This review of attitudes toward beauty will serve as a basis for follow-up studies that employ meta-analyses to draw more quantitative conclusions by aggregating many more study results.
According to a survey on the frequency of access to medical ads by the Korea Press Foundation in 2017, the most commonly exposed ads among adult men and women are advertising about beauty, plasticity and obesity. As of 2011, South Korea had the largest number of cosmetic surgeries in the world, with 131 cosmetic surgeries per 10,000 people. As a result, as many as 1,414 plastic surgery clinics are operating in South Korea, and the number is also on the rise. Although there are various standards for evaluating people's appearance, the desire to pursue a better look is growing day by day. Then, one might wonder what factors influence consumers' choices among the numerous advertisements for plastic surgery clinics. Based on these questions, this study identified the examples of plastic surgery advertisements, analyzed their type, and identified the types of advertisements with the high visual appeal of the advertising consumer through eye tracking experiment. In total, seven eye-tracking tests of plastic surgery social media advertisements were conducted on 10 subjects. The results showed that the commercial model was the biggest factor that caught the attraction and attention of the ad recipient first and that the most focused and long-standing factor was the treatment contents. Therefore, it is important to select proper commercial models for hospital and clinic contents and to specify factual treatment contents when producing social media advertisements for plastic surgeons. We hope these findings will help create online advertising for plastic surgery clinics effectively.
Background: The radial arteries are being used more often for coronary artery bypass grafting, We tried to the endoscopic radial artery harvest to reduce the cosmetic problems and neurologic complications of the conventional open harvesting and report the techniques and early results. Material and Method: The 86 patients underwent coronary artery bypass grafting between May 2003 and April 2005 had their nondominant radial artery endoscopically removed through a 2 cm incision at the wrist. The radial pedicle was dissected and was divided at antecubial area through a 5 mm counterincision. Result: The 23 patients complained of neuralgias on territory of superficial raidal none but no one complained of neuralgias on territory of lateral antebrachial cutaneous none. There was no functional impairment of the hand. There was no wound complication except a localized hematoma. All patients were contacted by telephone after postoperative 7.9$\pm$3.6 months. The 4 patients still complained of neuralgia. All the patients were satisfied with the aesthetics of the wounds. The multidetectional tomography was done on the 66 patients for the estimation of early patency of radial artery. There were 2 cases of stenosis and a case of occlusion. Conclusion: Endoscopic radial artery harvest had no functional impairment of the hand, lesser rate of neurologic complications and outstanding aesthetics. The results of early patency of the radial artery was similar to conventional methods. Therefore, we think that endoscopic radial artery harvest is the optimal procedure.
Background: The improvements in endoscopic equipment and surgical robots has encouraged the performance of minimally invasive cardiac operations. Yet only a few Korean studies have compared this procedure with the sternotomy approach. Material and Method: Between December 2005 and July 2007, 48 patients (group A) underwent minimally invasive cardiac surgery with AESOP through a small right thoracotomy. During the same period, 50 patients (group B) underwent conventional surgery. We compared the operative time, the operative results, the post-operative pain and the recovery of both groups. Result: There was no hospital mortality and there were no significant differences in the incidence of operative complications between the two groups. The operative $(292.7{\pm}61.7\;and\;264.0{\pm}47.9min$, respectively; p=0.01) and CPB times ($128.4{\pm}37.6\;and\;101.7{\pm}32.5min$, respectively; <0.01) were longer for group A, whereas there was no difference between the aortic cross clamp times ($82.1{\pm}35.0\;and\;87.8{\pm}113.5min$, respectively; p=0.74) and ventilator times ($18.0{\pm}18.4\;and\;19.7{\pm}9.7$ hr, respectively; p=0.57) between the groups. The stay on the ICU $(53.2{\pm}40.2\;and\;72.8{\pm}42.1hr$, respectively; p=0.02) and the hospitalization time ($9.7{\pm}7.2\;and\;14.8{\pm}11.9days$, respectively; p=0.01) were shorter for group A. The Patients in group B had more transfusions, but the difference was not significant. For the overall operative intervals, which ranged from one to four weeks, the pair score was significantly lower for the patients of group A than for the patients of group B. In terms of the postoperative activities, which were measured by the Duke Activity Scale questionnaire, the functional status score was clearly higher for group A compared to group B. The analysis showed no difference in the severity of either post-repair of mitral ($0.7{\pm}1.0\;and\;0.9{\pm}0.9$, respectively; p=0.60) and tricuspid regurgitation ($1.0{\pm}0.9\;and\;1.1{\pm}1.0$, respectively; p=0.89). In both groups, there were no valve related complications, except for one patient with paravalvular leakage in each group. Conclusion: These results show that compared with the median sternotomy patients, the patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery enjoyed significant postoperative advantages such as less pain, a more rapid return to full activity, improved cosmetics and a reduced hospital stay. The minimally invasive surgery can be done with similar clinical safety compared to the conventional surgery that's done through a median sternotomy.
