  • $TiO_2$ hollow microsphere was simply synthesized using various ionic liquids. Shapes and sizes of hollow microspheres were significantly different with the composition of ionic liquids. This is mainly attributed to the interaction between the organic solvent and the ionic liquid at the interface leading to the formation of micropsphere. Among the ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate was the most effective to synthesize the hollow microsphere.

  • Tungsten carbide microshaft is used as micro punch, electrode of micro electro discharge machining, and micro tool because of its high hardness and rigidity. In this research, tungsten carbide microshaft was fabricated using electrochemical machining. $H_2SO_4$ solution was used as the electrolyte because it can dissolve tungsten carbide and cobalt simultaneously. Experimentally studied were the effects of electrolyte concentration, machining time, and machining voltage on material removal rate and the shape of the microshaft. To eliminate the effects of bubbles and metal corrosion layer on microshaft shape, the machining was performed below the electrolysis voltage. Three step electrochemical process was suggested to fabricate the straight tungsten carbide microshaft. As a result, a straight tungsten carbide microshaft of $30{\mu}m$ in diameter and $500{\mu}m$ in length was obtained through the proposed three step electrochemical process.

  • In the binary system of SiC and carbon, porosity and pore size distribution of green body was controlled by varying pH, by the addition of polyelectrolyte dispersants, and by using different particle size of starting powders. The preforms having different green microstructure were fabricated by slip casting from suspensions having different dispersion condition. The reaction bonding process was carried out for these preforms. The condition of reaction bonding was 1600$^{\circ}C$ and 20 min. under vacuum atmosphere. The analyses of optical and SEM were studied to investigate the effect of green microstructure on that of reaction bonded silicon carbide and subsequently the mechanical properties of sintered body was investigated. Different green microstructures were obtained from suspensions having different dispersion condition. It was found that the pore size could be remarkably reduced for a fine SiC(0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$). The bimodal microstructure was not found in the present study, which is frequently observed in the typical reaction bonded silicon carbide. It is considered that the ratio between SiC and C was responsible for the formation of bimodal microstructure. For the preform fabricated from the well dispersed suspension, the 3-point bending strength of reaction-bonded silicon carbide was 310${\pm}$40 MPa compared to the specimen fabricated from relatively agglomerated particles having lower value 260${\pm}$MPa.

  • An eco-friendly production technique of Al-8.6Ti-0.025C refiner was developed by melting a Al-Ti master alloy in a graphite crucible, in which the potential nucleation site, TiC effectively formed by the spontaneous in-situ reaction between excessive Ti and carbon from graphite crucible. The A3003 alloy refined by the Al-8.6Ti-0.025C showed effectively refined macrostructure and enhanced mechanical properties comparable to the commercial Al-Ti-B refiner. The effective refinement was achieved in a shorter compare to the melt-treating time commercial Al-Ti-B refiner.

  • In this study, micro- and submicron particles of itraconazole, a poorly water-soluble antifungal drug, were prepared for improving its aqueous solubility using an ultrasound-assisted supercritical fluid technique, called SAS-EM. The SAS-EM process used in our experiments was different from the conventional SAS-EM in that the ultrasound was applied directly to the spray nozzle. The effect of the ultrasonic power, temperature, and solvent on the formation of itraconazole particles were investigated. Smaller particles were obtained through our SAS-EM process compared with the ASES process, and the mean particle size decreased as the ultrasonic power increased. Our experimental results confirmed that the ultrasound-assisted supercritical fluid process is an efficient method for producing ultrafine particles.
