The effects of soymilk residues solubilization by cellulase, protease, koji and yeast were investigated on dry matter and protein yields, amino acid and organic acid contents. Co-treatment of soymilk residues by cellulase and protease gave high dry matter yield and protein yield. Koji treatment followed by yeast fermentation was effective for increasing organic acid content and producing soy sauce-like taste and odor. Organic acid content of fermented hydrolysates was improved by cellulase treatment. Protease treatment rather than koji treatment gave high amino acid content, and cellulase treatment seemed to have little effect on increasing free amino acid content. In sensory evaluation, koji-treated hydrolysate showed higher overall acceptance than other hydrolysates, however it showed lower overall acceptance than commercial fermented soy sauce.
The antimicrobial effect of mixed solution of botanical antimicrobial agent-citrus product (BAAC) and such a natural additive as aloe, ginseng or Prunus mume extract on the spoilage microorganisms of soybean sprouts were investigated by paper disk method. The mixture (BAAG) of BAAC and ginseng extract showed the remarkable antimicrobial activity in the result of the experiment. Therefore, we used BAAG as pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts. Total bacterial and Escherichia coli cell count of soybean sprouts pre-soaked and cultivated in the BAAG-diluted solution (50 ppm) showed 2.5 ${\times}$ 10 CFU/mL and 1.3 ${\times}$ 10 cfu/mL in comparison with 3.5 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL and 5.8 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL of the control, respectively. BAAG-treated soybean sprouts also showed no slimy brown product and undesirable odor characterized in the control. It was confirmed that BAAG could be a proper pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts.

In recent years, a rapid growth in the population and urbanization led to an increasing industrial growth. The inadequate treated-wasted water from industry and various non-point sources causes significant negative effects on the stream water. For past few decades, extensive researches have been performed on water purification process. The purpose of this study is to investigate mechanical performance and water purification properties of porous concrete by using effective microorganisms through the site assessment test. The mechanical performance evaluation results showed that the increase void ration caused an decrease in the strength. The optimal mix rate was found to be 15% void rate From the site assessment, it was evaluated that the porous concrete improved the quality of the water and the purification ratios are 34.1 for SS, 14.6% for BOD, 34.9% for COD, 11.4% for T-N, and 12.6% for T-P. The porous concrete and the related purification technique can reduce the non-point pollution sources flowing into the river.
There are several ways to remove and treat toxic heavy metals in the environment: chemical, physical and biological ways. The biological treatment utilizes the natural reactions of microorganisms living in the environments. These reactions include biosorption and bioaccumulation, oxidation and reduction, methylation and demethylation, metal - organic complexation and insoluble complex formation. The biological reactions provide a crucial key technology in the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils and waters. According to recent reports, various kinds of heavy metal species were removed by microorganisms and the new approaches and removal conditions to remediate the metals were also tried and reported elsewhere. This was mostly carried out by microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and alga. In addition, a recent development of molecular biology shed light on the enhancing the microorganism's natural remediation capability as well as improving the current biological treatment.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary probiotics and immunomodulator on growth performance, carcass characteristics, fecal $NH_3$ content and pathogenic bacteria counts in ileum and cecum and ileum of broiler chicken (Korean native chicken, HanHyup No. 3). A total of 120 (day-old) chicks were randomly divided into 5 treatments with 3 replicates and there were 8 birds per replicate. Dietary treatments consisted of five diets; the corn-soybean based control diet (C), the diet containing antibiotics (Avilamycin) 10 ppm (T1), the diet containing probiotics 1 [(Lactobacillus ($4.45{\times}10^6$) + yeast ($1.51{\times}10^6$) + Bacillus subtilis ($3.50{\times}10^5$)] at 0.5% level (T2), probiotics 2 [(Lactobacillus ($6.70{\times}10^7$) + yeast ($3.10{\times}10^6$)] at 0.5% level in diet (T3), and the diet containing probiotics 3 [T2 + ${\beta}$-glucan + organic acid] (T4) and raised for 9 weeks. There were no significant differences among treatments in weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. Carcass ratios of broilers were higher in T3 and T4 than other treatments, however, the differences were non-significant. Internal organs and liver, heart weight were significantly increased in T4 (p<0.05) compared to other treatments. The fecal $NH_3$ gas content was decreased (p<0.05) in antibiotics fed group than others. However, probiotic fed groups were not different when compared with control. The number of Salmonella and E. coli in cecum were reduced in the group supplemented with probiotics and immunomodulator compared to the antibiotics (p<0.05). In this experiment, we showed that diets containing pro-biotics and immunomodulator were capable of an alternative to antibiotics.
Occurrences of coastal dredged materials are ever increasing due to port construction, navigational course maintenance and dredging of polluted coastal sediments. Ocean dumping of the coastal dredged materials has become virtually prohibited as London Treaty will be enacted as of the year 2012. It will be necessary to treat and recycle the dredged materials that may carry organic pollutants and heavy metals in a reasonable and effective process: collection of the dredged materials, liquid and solid separation, and treatment of organic compounds and heavy metals. In this study we have developed a continuous bioreactor system that can treat a mixture of silt and particulate organic matter using a microbial consortium (BM-S-1). The steady-state operation conditions were: pH (7.4-7.5), temperature ($16^{\circ}C$), DO (7.5-7.9), and salt concentration (3.4-3.7%). The treatment efficiencies of SCOD, T-N and T-P of the mixture were 95-96%, 92-99%, and 79-97%. The system was also effective in removal of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, and Cr. Levels of MLSS during three months operation period were 11,000-19,000 mg/L. Interestingly, there was little sludge generated during this period of operation. The augmented microbial consortium seemed to be quite active in the removal of the organic component (30%) present in the dredged material in association with indigenous bacteria. The dominant phyla in the treatment processes were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes while dominant genii were Marinobacterium, Flaviramulus, Formosa, Alteromonadaceae_uc, Flavobacteriaceae_uc. These results will contribute to a development of a successful bioremediation technology for various coastal and river sediments with a high content of organic matter, inorganic nutrients and heavy metals, leading to a successful reuse of the polluted dredged sediments.

A new approach to the solubilization of waste activated sludge (WAS) using alginate-quaternary ammonium complex beads was investigated under controlled mild alkaline conditions. The complex beads were prepared by the reaction of sodium alginate (SA) with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl-octadecyldimethylammonium chloride (TSA) in acid solution, followed by crosslinking with $CaCl_2$. Treatment of WAS with SA-TSA complex beads was effective for enhancing the efficacy of WAS solubilization. The highest value of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration (3,900 mg/L) was achieved after 10 days of treatment with 30% (v/v) SA-TSA complex beads. The WAS solubilization efficacy of the complex beads was also evaluated by estimating the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The maximum value of VFAs was 2,961 mg/L, and the overall proportions of VFAs were more than 75% of SCOD. The main components of VFAs were acetic, propionic, iso-butyric, and butyric acids. These results suggest that SA-TSA complex beads might be useful for enhancing the solubilization of WAS. The potential use of VFAs as the external carbon substrate for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by a mixed microbial culture (MMC) was also examined. The enrichment of PHA-accumulating MMC could be achieved by periodic feeding of VFAs generated from WAS in a sequencing batch reactor. The composition of PHA synthesized from VFAs mainly consisted of 3-hydroxybutyrate. The maximum PHA content accounted for 25.9% of dry cell weight. PHA production by this process is considered to be promising since it has a doubly beneficial effect on the environment by reducing the amount of WAS and concomitantly producing an eco-friendly biopolymer.
In this study, a novel bioreactor system using a diffuser type hollow fiber membranes (hollow fiber membrane diffuser, HFMD) was applied to investigate the feasibility and biodegradation capacity for the treatment of a gaseous mixture consisting of benzene, toluene and p-xylene(BTX). First, A mixed culture pre-acclimated to toluene effectively biodegraded the BTX mixture at an overall removal efficiency of approximately 70% for a 20-day operational period. It was found that the biodegradation of toluene was slightly inhibited because of the presence of benzene and p-xylene. Second, the elimination capacity (EC) of total BTX increased up to 360 $g/m^3/hr$, which was substantially higher than maximum ECs for BTEX reported in the biofiltration literature. Consequently, the hollow fiber membrane diffuser was considered as an alternative method over other conventional VOC-treating technologies such as biofilters.
A study was carried out to see the effects of phenol on the biological degradation of a wastewater containing 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol and the biodegradation kinetic coefficients of Eckenfelder's modified model for the activated sludge process. The system containing base mix (BM) which was formulated with essential energy sources and nutrients was run down and washed out when 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol was introduced into the base mix unit without acclimation to phenol. Whereas for the system acclimated to phenol, the treatment efficiency was 91.9% in terms of $BOD_5$ and treatability for each chemical of phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol was 99.8%, 43.3% and 62.5% based on concentration, respectively. Additional BM was added into the combined unit containing phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol so that the better treatment efficiency was achieved for each compound. The biokinetic coefficient of Eckenfelder's modified model without phenol acclimation was not estimated because the system did not reach the steady state. Thc coefficient for the phenol acclimation was 12.44 /day, however it was changed as 46.91 /day in addition of both of phenol acclimation and 47 mg/l of BM. The results presented above could be useful for the process design and further study in the field of biodegradation of benzene derivatives.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the dietary effects of mixture of probiotics and colistin on laying performance, intestinal microflora and egg yolk cholesterol in laying hens. One hundred sixty 50-wk-old Hy-Line Brown layers were divided into four treatments and fed a commercial diet (Control) or experimental diets containing 0.2% mixture of probiotics or probiotics and colistin mixture (T1, Bacillus subtilis + Aspergillus oryzae + Lactobacillus plantarum; T2, Bacillus subtilis + Aspergillus oryzae; T3, Bacillus subtilis + Aspergillus oryzae+colistin) for 8 wk. No significant differences were found in laying performance and liver weight among the groups. The Haugh unit of treated groups were significantly improved (P<0.05) compared to that of control, but eggshell qualities were not changed by the treatments. The cecal ammonia concentration was significantly decreased in both T1 and T3 groups. The number of coli forms in cecal content and feces were significantly reduced in all treated groups compared to that of Control (P<0.05). The egg yolk cholesterol contents in the groups fed the diet containing mixture of probiotics and colistin were reduced in comparison with that of Control. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of mixture of probiotics and colistin improved quality of egg albumen, and reduced the egg cholesterol contents. They also reduced intestinal coli forms without harmful effects on overall productive and physiological responses in laying hens.
