  • The multi-region model, to describe preferential flow, is an equation representing solute transport in soils by dividing soil into numerous pore groups and using the hydraulic properties of the soil. As the model partial differential equation (PDE) is solved numerically with finite difference methods. a modified equivalent partial differential equation(MEPDE) of the partial differential equation of the multi-region model is derived to analyze the accuracy and consistency of the solution of the model PDE and the Von Neumann method is used to analyze the stability of the finite difference scheme. The evaluation obtained from the MEPDE indicated that the finite difference scheme was found to be consistent with the model PDE and had the second order accuracy The stability analysis is performed to analyze the model PDE with the amplification ratio and the phase lag using the Von Neumann method. The amplification ratio of the finite difference scheme gave non-dissipative results with various Peclet numbers and yielded the most high values as the Peclet number was one. The phase lag showed that the frequency component of the finite difference scheme lagged the true solution. From the result of the stability analysis for the model PDE, it is analyzed that the model domain should be discretized in the range of Pe < 1.0 and Cr < 2.0 to obtain the more accurate solution.

  • Direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC) with proton exchange membrane (PEM) has advantages over the conventional power source (e.g. vehicle). DMFC, however, has a problem to be solved such as methanol crossover, high anodic overpotential and limiting current density, etc. The physicochemical phenomena in DMFC can be described by coupled PDEs (partial differential equations), which can be solved by a PDE solver. In this paper, we utilized a commercial software FEMLAB to solve the PDEs. The FEMLAB is one of the software programs available which are developed as a solver for building physics problems based on PDEs and is designed to simulate systems of coupled PDEs which may be 1D, 2D, 3D, non-liner and time dependent. We performed simulation using the Tafel equation as an electrochemical reaction model to analyze methanol concentration profile in DMFC system. We confirm that the rapid decrease of methanol concentration at anodic catalyst layer with the increase of the current density is a main reason of the low performance in DMFC through simulation results.

  • In this paper, a mixed variational principle applicable to the linear elasticity of inhomogeneous anisotropic materials is presented. For derivation of the general variational principle, a systematic procedure for the variational formulation of linear coupled boundary value problems developed by Sandhu et al. is employed. Consistency condition of the field operators with the boundary operators results in explicit inclusion of boundary conditions in the governing functional. Extensions of admissible state function spaces and specialization to a certain relation in the general governing functional lead to the desired mixed variational principle. In the physical sense, the present variational principle is analogous to the Reissner's recent formulation obtained by applying Lagrange multiplier technique followed by partial Legendre transform to the classical minimum potential energy principle. However, the present one is more advantageous for the application to the general anisotropic materials since Reissner's principle contains an implicit function which is not easily converted to an explicit form.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of horizontally curved beams with transition currie. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a curved beam element subjected to the stress resultants and inertia forces, the governing differential equations are derived for the out-of-plane vibration of curved beam with variable curvature. These equations are applied to the beam having transition curve in which the clothiod curve is chosen in this study. The differential equations are solved by the numerical methods lot calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. For verifying theories developed herein, the frequency parameters obtained from this studs and ADINA are compared with each other. As the numerical results, the various parametric studies effecting on natural frequencies are investigated and those results are presented in tables and figures.

  • Recently, Software Development was applied to new-approach methods as a various form : client-server system and web-programing, object-orient concept, distributed development with a network environments. On the other hand, it be concerned about the distributed development technology and increasing of object-oriented methodology. These technology is spread out the software quality and improve of software production, reduction of the software develop working. Futures, we considered about the distributed software development technique with a many workstation. In this paper, we discussed optimal release problem based on a stochastic differential equation model for the distributed Software development environments. In the past, the software reliability applied to quality a rough guess with a software development process and approach by the estimation of reliability for a test progress. But, in this paper, we decided to optimal release times two method: first, SRGM with an error counting model in fault detection phase by NHPP. Second, fault detection is change of continuous random variable by SDE(stochastic differential equation). Here, we decide to optimal release time as a minimum cost form the detected failure data and debugging fault data during the system test phase and operational phase. Especially, we discussed to limitation of reliability considering of total software cost probability distribution.

• Mathematically-rigorous time-volume averaged conservation equations were simplified to established the differential equations of THERMIT-6S, which is a two-fluid 3-D code. The difference equations of THERMIT-6S were obtained by discretizing the proceeding set of differential equations. The spatial discretization is characterized by a first-order spatial scheme, donor cell method, and staggered mesh layout. For time discretization, a first order semi-implicit scheme treats implictly sonic terms and terms relating to local transport phenomena and explicitly convective terms. The results were linearized by the Newton-Raphson method. In order to construct the reduced pressure equation, the linearized equations were manipulated so that all variables are coupled between mesh cells through only the pressure variable. By simulating numerically the OPERA-15 experiment, it was found that THERMIT-6S is a very powerful code in predicting reactor behavior after sodium boiling including flow coastdown, reversal flow and flow oscillation.

  • Considering an integral equation governing the motion of unfolding fin, an algebraic equation was acquired to get estimated minimum deployment energy required for the successful fin unfolding under the given wind condition. To complete the integration of moment, some approximations had to be introduced particularly to frictional moment and aerodynamic damping for which deployment angular speed of the unfolding fin was modelled as a function of deployment angle only with assumed profile using expected maximum angular speed. Technique for the estimation of the minimum required deployment energy was finalized by introducing the ideal deployment angular speed representing work done by the fin unfolding device alone during fin unfolding and was confirmed by comparing results from simulation with various aerodynamic conditions and profiles of the hinge torque.

  • We propose a fast and accurate fluid solver of the Wavier-Stokes equations for the physics-based fluid simulations. Our method utilizes the solution of the Stokes equation as an initial guess for the velocity of the nonlinear term in the Wavier-Stokes equations. By guessing the initial velocity close to the exact solution of the given nonlinear differential equations, we can develop remarkably accurate and stable fluid solver. Our solver is based on the implicit scheme of finite difference methods, that makes it work well for large time steps. Since we employ the ADI method, our solver is also fast and has a uniform computation time. The experimental results show that our solver is excellent for fluids with high Reynolds numbers such as smoke and clouds.
