  • This study compares eight bronze spoons in the Goryeo Dynasty and analyzes their components and lead isotopes in order to confirm the relationship between their production sites and excavation sites. Most of the excavated spoons have elliptical heads, and their handles are categorized into two types. Bronze spoons are made of binary Cu-Sn alloys, but Pb is not added. The same artifacts can have different trace elements depending on location, and the spoons had high Ag content. According to an analysis of their lead isotopic ratio, they were made with raw materials produced in Zone 3 of the South Korean galena map. If the data of the trace elements in the raw ores of the bronze is accumulated, it can be used to indicate the provenance of the artifacts.

  • Quaternary Jungok basalts are distributed along the old Hantan river in Mid-Korean Peninsula. They were flowed out from Mt. Ori and Upland (680 m), and they formed narrow and long basalt plateau showing the layers of 10 to 20 meters in thickness and about 95 km in length. Fifty seven samples were collected from the study area, and sixteen rock samples were selected and analysed for major and trace elements. The analyzed samples have alkalic composition and show a relatively restricted variation in major element chemistry (except MgO), as comparing to the that of trace element. Based on major element chemistry, a quantitative modelling of fractional crystallization by multiple linear regression method suggests that the chemical evolution of the evolved rocks can be generated by fractionation of olivine, plagioc1ase, clinopyroxene, and magnetite in proportion of 56 : 25 : 17 : 2, respectively. The calculated trace element abundances by mineral proportions estimated from major element modelling, however, underestimate the incompatible element concentrations in the evolved rocks. According to the incompatible element abundances, simple fractional crystallization process has difficulty to explain the chemical variation of the evolved rocks. It seems that the other processes, which enrichment of incompatible elements can occure without concomitant changes in major element compositions, are needed in order to explain the chemical variation of the Jungok basalts. Thus, the major elements and compatible trace elements variations of the Jungok basalts are due to fractional crystallization, but the incompatible elements variation is due to fractional crystallization superimposed on already varying concentrations caused by slightly different degrees of melting of the same source, and/or due to periodic replenishment, tapping and fractionation(RTF) processes.

  • Duibaejae basalts from Goseong, Gangwon-do, are divided into the lower basalt and the upper basalt depending on the properties, such as occurrence, mineral compositions, and major and trace compositions of the basalts. The lower basalts have characteristics of agglomerate rocks as well as contain, crustal and mantle xenoliths, and olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase xenocrysts. The upper basalts with columnar joints contain relatively more mantle xenolith and olivine xenocryst than the lower basalts. The major and trace element compositions suggest that the composition of the upper basalts is close to primary magma composition. Enrichment and depletion patterns of the trace and the rare-earth elements of the lower basalts are similar to those of the upper basalts, whereas the lower basalts are more LREE enriched than the upper basalts. The source magmas of the lower and upper basalts from Duibaejae volcanic edifice were generated from about 0.8-1.2% and 3.7-4.0% batch melting of garnet peridotite, respectively. The abundance of granite xenolith, and plagioclase and quartz xenocrysts with reaction rim indicates that the lower basalts, compared with upper basalts, might have been assimilated with the crustal materials during ascending to surface.

  • To obtain information for the proper fertilization management of cut-flower roses, the amount of macro and micro elements absorbed by cut-flower roses from soil for a year was investigated. Three cut-flower rose cultivars which are called 'Grandgara', 'Nobless', and 'Centina' were transplanted to a sandy loam soil, N-P-K standard fertilization was applied to the soil, and drip irrigation was done at the level of 10 kPa soil moisture tension. There was not significantly different in the harvest amount of cut-flower rose between 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless', but the harvest yield of 'Centina' was about 63% level when compared to that of 'Grandgara'. Considering seasonal changes in the content of nutrients in plant, parts, the uptake of untrients was higher in winter season than that in spring and summer seasons. Except for 'Centina', the nutrient amount removed from plant parts of 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless' increased with the sequence of floral part < stem < leaf, indicating that it is more dependent on biomass yield than on the content of nutrients in each plant part. The ratio of N/K amount absorbed by 'Nobless' and 'Centina' was 1.13 and 1.28. respectively, lower than 1.68 of 'Grandgara', showing that the requirement for K is greater in 'Nobless' and 'Centina' than in 'Grandgara'. The use efficiency of nutrients by cut-flower roses ranged from 39 to 64% in nitrogen, 5 to 9% in phosphorus, and 37 to 67% in potassium. It suggests that the requirement for P in cut-flower roses is very low.

  • A method was developed for the determination of trace elements in seawater by precipitate flotation preconcentration and subsequent flame atomic absorption detection. In order to quantitatively coprecipitate trace ions such as Cd(II), CuI(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Pd(II), 2.0 ml of 1.0M cerium(III) solution was added to 1.0l of seawater and the pH was adjusted to 9.5 with 5.0 M sodium hydroxide solution while stirring with a magnetic stirrer. The precipitate was floated with the aid of surfactant solution (1.0 ml of 0.3% sodium oleate) by bubbling nitrogen gas through a porous (No. 4) fritted glass disk. The floats was collected in a small Erlenmeyer flask by suction. The washed precipitate was dissolved in 8.0 M nitric acid and marked with deionized water in the volumetric flask of 10.0 ml. The analyte was determined by measuring the atomic absorbances in 100-fold concentrated solution. Above all analytes in Kangnung (East Sea) and Kanghwado (West Sea) sea waters were found to be under the detection limit of this method. The recoveries of over 92% for all analytes spiked into seawater samples showed that this method was applicable to the analysis of real seawater.

  • The physical and chemical characteristics of loess-paleosol sequence in Jeongjang-ri, Geochang basin are examined using the magnetic susceptibility measurement, grain size analysis, OSL age dating, major, rare earth and trace elements analysis. The grain size characteristics of the loess-palesol sequence are obviously different from those of river sediment forming river terrace deposits and the Chinese Loess Plateau. The loess-paleosol sequence consisting of L1, L1LL1, L1S1, L1L2, S1 and L2 from top to bottom is estimated to MIS 2~MIS 6 and the river terrace to MIS 7. The compositions of major, rare earth and trace elements indicate that the sequence show more weathered characteristics than the Chinese Loess Plateau and originated from the Chinese Loess Plateau. These features are in harmony with the previous studies in Korea.

  • In order to assess the pollution status and distribution characteristics of PM and PM-bound species, PM10 samples were collected using mini-volume air sampler at the subway cabin in Daejeon city. Measurements of about 24 elements including toxic metals (e.g., As, Cr, Mn, V, Zn) in PM10 were made by instrumental neutron activation analysis and X-ray fluorescence. The average PM10 concentration was $59.3{\pm}14.5{\mu}g/m^3$ in the subway cabin with a range of 42.2 to $97.4{\mu}g/m^3$, while the associated elemental concentrations were varied in the range of $10^{-3}$ to $10^5ng/m^3$. It was found that the concentration of Fe ($12.5{\mu}g/m^3$) was substantially higher than any other element. The Fe concentration was apportioned by about 20% of the PM10 concentration. The results of factor analysis indicate that there are no more than six sources in the cabin (e.g., brake-nonferrous metal particle, resuspended rail dust, fuel combustion, vehicle exhaust, black carbon, Cr-related).
