Method: Participants in this study were 354 nurses from three hospitals and one university. The scales of organizational culture, informatics competency for nurses were used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation were used for data analysis. Results: The dominant organizational culture was hierarch-oriented culture. Nursing informatics competency of the participants was relatively low with a mean score 3.04. Organizational culture was related to informatics competency with 2 significant canonical variables. The first variate showed the higher four subcategories of organizational culture showed the better nursing informatics. The second variate indicated that nurses felt higher innovation-related and lower hierarch-related culture showed higher medical informatics-related software usage and computer related information management, lower perception of informatics and information search using internet. Conclusion: Organization culture has a major of impact on the success of information system use. Therefore, the continuous strategy for higher innovation-related organizational culture such as management support should be needed.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and implement an educational program for cultural competence in nursing for nursing students, and to evaluate its effects on transcultural self-efficacy, intercultural communication competence, and state anxiety. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used with an experimental group (n=22) and a control group (n=27). Outcome variables were measured by transcultural self-efficacy, intercultural communication competence, and state anxiety before and after the program. The experimental group participated in an educational course for cultural competence in nursing for 14 weeks while the control group did not participate in any course. Chi-square test, Fisher's exact probability test, t-test, MANCOVA, and ANCOVA were performed to analyze the data. Results: The experimental group showed significantly higher posttest scores in the transcultural self-efficacy score (F=19.76, p<.001, partial ${\eta}^2=.34$, observed power .99) and the intercultural communication competence score (F=17.56, p<.001, partial ${\eta}^2=.32$, observed power .98) than that of the control group. The experimental group showed a significantly lower state anxiety score (F=5.30, p=.027, partial ${\eta}^2=.12$, observed power .61) than that of the control group. Conclusions: This educational program was effective on nursing students' cultural competence. Therefore, it is suggested that this program be used for other nursing students. It is also necessary to evaluate its effects after a longer period.

Methods: The participants were 176 allied health college students. Data collection was conducted from June 12 to 30, 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis with the SPSS program. Results: The mean self-efficacy score was 3.52;, the mean intercultural communicative competence score was 3.24;, and the mean cultural competence score was 3.26. Cultural competence differed significantly by grade(p=.008), major(p<.001), overseas study exchange(p=.020), foreign language skill(p=.011), domestic multicultural friends (p=.002) and contact with people(p=.026) of general characteristics. Statistically significant positive relationships were observed between self-efficacy(r=.23), intercultural communicative competence(r=.58), and cultural competence. A total of 35.9% of cultural competence was explained by intercultural communicative competence and grade. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop cultural education programs to improve cultural competence, with consideration for intercultural communicative competence and grade levels.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a cultural competence improvement program for maternity nurses. Methods: A quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group pre and posttest design was used. Participants were 67 maternity nurses caring for multicultural pregnant women in G city. The cultural competence improvement program was developed based on the 3-D Puzzle Model and was provided using case-based small group learning methods for the experimental group (n=31). The control group (n=36) did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using self-report structured questionnaires at two time points: prior to the intervention and after the intervention and were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group reported significant positive changes for cultural knowledge (t=6.39, p<.001), cultural awareness (t=3.50, p<.001), and cultural acceptance (t=4.08, p<.001). However, change in cultural nursing behaviors (t=0.92, p=.067) was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Findings from this study indicate that a cultural competence improvement program with case-based small group learning is a useful intervention strategy to promote multicultural maternity care. Further, strategies to improve cultural nursing behavior should be developed to promote culturally congruent nursing care.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between cultural competency and the importance of nurses' qualities perceived by undergraduate nursing students. Methods: Researchers developed two tools for this study after reviewing the related literature and conducting research team workshops: questionnaire of cultural competency and the importance of nurses' qualities. 200 nursing students were recruited in convenient sampling to respond to these questionnaires. Of nurses' 10 qualities, major affecting factors on the cultural competency were identified by stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The nursing students perceived technical nursing skills and professional nursing knowledge as nurses' most important qualities. However, 'having a passion for patient care', 'demonstrating strong nursing profession's code of ethics' and 'teaching and research ability' were found as significant influencing factors on the variance of the cultural competency. These three factors explained 16% of the total variances of the cultural competency (F=13.98, p<.001). Conclusion: The educational strategies to improve cultural nursing competency need to incorporate students' expectations for the professional nurses' roles. Also, further studies need to develop reliable and valid measurement tools for cultural competency.
