  • Meta-analysis refers to the analysis of analysis. It is the statistical analysis of a large collection of analysis results from individual studies for the purpose of summarizing, integrating and interpreting the inconsistent findings. However, no meta-analysis study has been conducted in Library and Information Science in Korea. This Study introduced the characteristics, basic principles, analysis procesure, and major models of meta-analysis, reviewed meta-analysis studies in Library and Information Science, and discussed major problems in conducting meta-analysis in Library and Information Science especially in Korea.

For the study 131 journal articles taken from three scholarly journals in the field of Economics. Public Administration, and Library and Information Science are selected and all analyses are taken in terms of the material types, the publication place, and the publication year of the papers cited by those journal articles. In result, it was found that the half-life of monographs is 6.76, that of scholarly journal articles 8.07, that of reports 6.49, and that of theses 3.45. Also, the study finds that most researchers in those field, cited more articles published in foreign countries(67.79%) that those published from Korea(32.21%).

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways to improve the performance of SVM (Support Vector Machines) text classifier using inter-document similarities. SVMs are powerful machine learning systems, which are considered as the state-of-the-art technique for automatic document classification. In this paper text categorization via SVMs approach based on feature representation with document vectors is suggested. In this approach, document vectors instead of index terms are used as features, and vector similarities instead of term weights are used as feature values. Experiments show that SVM classifier with document vector features can improve the document classification performance. For the sake of run-time efficiency, two methods are developed: One is to select document vector features, and the other is to use category centroid vector features instead. Experiments on these two methods show that we can get improved performance with small vector feature set than the performance of conventional methods with index term features.

  • In this study, it was investigated if there were some differences on the preference of researchers to grey literature among seven different subjects in the field of science and technology using citation analysis. The result shows that there were some differences among researchers, depending on the subject area. It also appears that the preference of grey literature of researchers is dissimilar in journals in English and journals in Korean, regardless of the subject area. Finally, partial correlation coefficient among nine different types of material was counted with the control of languages used and subject areas included. Among nine types of cited documents, the value of partial correlation coefficient between proceedings and miscellaneous is larger than that of any other coupled comparison This means that researchers who cite articles from proceedings tend to include information from miscellaneous at the same time.

  • This study was carried out on the citations within the chemistry field Ph.D. dissertations to ascertain what types of documents are the most frequently used in the research process, the most frequently consulted journals and obsolescence rate of the journals. The analysis covered 42 doctoral theses presented at 'K' university in Seoul from 2000 to 2008. The results obtained from the 3,258 citations revealed that the most frequently used documents were Academic Journal, which accounted for 91 percent of the total; 27 journals met 50 percent of the information needs; and the age of 50 percent of the citations was no older than 9 years. Finally, the results can be used as a tool for the collection management of the library. and Researcher with the chemistry field Ph.D. dissertation.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a media literacy education model that helps public librarians plan and operate media literacy education programs in South Korea. To develop the model, a mixed methods study consisting of a literature review, a survey of librarians, and interviews with professors, public librarians, and media literacy instructors was conducted, Additionally, an expert advisory committee was formed and consulted to obtain opinions on the developed model. As a result of survey and interviews, public libraries and librarians are perceived to have a responsibility to improve citizens' media literacy, and public libraries are recognized as the best educational institution to achieve that goal. By reflecting on the literature review and analysis of the research findings, the research team developed, and presents herein, a media literacy education model that includes educational objectives, core competencies, educational targets, media types, and roles and functions for each educational subject.

  • This study aims to identify the academic landscape of the field of Library and Information Science by analyzing the research areas of the four major domestic journals using structural topic modeling and network analysis. The results show that each journal focuses on different research areas. The Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science covers the most comprehensive range of research areas in the field, while the Journal of the Korean Biblia Society for Library and Information Science shows a similar research trend but with a higher preference for research areas related to library management and library programs. The Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society deals more with topics related to school libraries and reading education and the Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management focuses more on information technology and information science. This study is able to provide valuable foundational data for researchers in submitting their papers and for the topical specialization and diversification of the journals in the field of Library and Information Science.

  • Individuals majoring in Library and Information Science (LIS) typically find employment in the library sector, such as working as librarians, university librarians, and in public libraries. Recent advancements in information technology and shifts in work outlooks have broadened the professional opportunities for students majoring in LIS in several sectors. Research on career exploration varies based on the university major or occupation. This paper suggests a methodology for conducting surveys and analyzing data efficiently to support ongoing career exploration for students majoring in LIS. It also examines the findings of a career exploration survey conducted among LIS majors. The survey findings indicate that individuals majoring in LIS are adapting their salary expectations and priorities in alignment with societal shifts, showing a preference for diverse career opportunities outside traditional librarian roles. Effective support and ongoing research are essential for the career development of LIS majors in this environment.
