A Study on the Development of a Standard Curriculum for Education of Library and Information Science in Korea (한국의 문헌정보학 교육을 위한 표준교육과정 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Since the curriculum of the department of library and information science for nurturing librarians and teacher-librarians is not standardized and the education scope and content of subjects for each exam to recruit librarians and teacher-librarians is also not standardized, the objectivity and credibility required for national exam are not guaranteed. This study is for developing a standard curriculum as one of the solutions regarding the foregoing problem. To achieve the goal of this study, first of all, the requirements for librarians and teacher-librarians and a national exam related to Teacher Certification Examination, regulation, and implementation rules were reviewed. Secondly, the justification of the suggested subjects through analyzing prior studies for developing a curriculum for library and information science was reviewed. Thirdly, the subjects resulted from the two foregoing methods were confirmed as a standard curriculum for library and information science through a focus group discussion among practicing librarians.

A Study on the Education of Library Management in Library and Information Science (문헌정보학의 도서관경영 분야 교육에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to reveal the problems of the education of library management area in library and information science and to seek possible methods for solving the problems. It was revealed that the number of subjects of library management area was often changed by the influence of information science. It was also disclosed that the education of library management does not satisfy what the librarians' demand. The study provides the following suggestions for the better education of library management: first, the establishment of the standardization of library and information science curriculum which includes the provision of the number, title and contents of the subjects of library management and secondly, close cooperation with librarians when opening new subjects of library management area.

  • This study was performed to design a field training curriculum model linked to the National Competence Standards (NCS) in Library and Information Science majors by analyzing factors influencing satisfaction of the field practice program and by drawing NCS capacity units suitable as field training configuration factors. It was also conducted to give shape to the standards and guidelines of NCS-based field training curriculum. For this study, first, we analyzed the implementation status of the National Competence Standards (NCS), particularly in Library and Information Science major. Second, we derived influencing factors of the field practice program through the field training satisfaction survey from Library and Information Science students. Third, we have designed a training curriculum model associated with NCS seeking proper matches with actual work of the library site through research methods including focus group interviews. Fourth, education guidelines of the field training required to interns were proposed in detail.

An Analysis on Curriculum of Library and Information Science in U.S. (미국 문헌정보학 교과과정 주제에 대한 분석 연구)

  • Since new issues and topics are emerging in the information and library science fields, diverse needs are identified to enhance the curriculum of library and information science education. This study investigated curriculum of library and information science in US and identified the topics of classes in the curriculum by the three aspects such as competency areas, scientific and technology category, and research fields. Consequently, topics related various information technology including system design and implement are the most popular topics in all analyses. Library and information center management and user service are also major topics of the curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose considerations prior to the development of a standard curriculum for Library and Information Science that secures the objectivity and reliability of the curriculum nationally. To this end, first, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's notification related to NCS job units and librarian qualification standards in the field of Library and Information Science was reviewed. Second, The current status was investigated and analyzed by investigating and analyzing the courses opened in Library and Information Science nationwide. Third, surveys and focus interviews were conducted on librarians and information experts. The implications from the analysis results are as follows. Among the Library and Information Science departments opened in 2021, the field with the highest number of subjects was "information service," and it was confirmed that the most frequently derived keyword was "information." The survey results were analyzed through IPA analysis and Borich demand analysis, and the top priority required subjects for each grade were derived. As a result of investigating the opinions of librarians and information experts in the field through surveys and focus interviews, it was confirmed that Korean Library and Information Science education should be conducted not only in standardization but also in parallel with the operation of specialized subjects that can cover various users.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum based on the National Competency Standards(NCS) to raise the higher professional staffs that can adapt to environmental changes due to globalization and local industry demands and to improve the quality of learning and to accept policy of the Ministry of Education. We conducted with the measurement of Educational performance by pre/post, 3 dignosis test. As a result, There were improvements in Educational Performance. Based upon Educational performance and analysis, several new directions for NCS education in the filed of LIS curriculum are suggested. We hope from this study that an application of NCS would be activated fully in Library, educational institutes and qualifying examination institutes and that diverse feedbacks from related parties would make a lead to a better updated version of NCS development in library.

  • This study seeks to develop a curriculum operating model for Korean Library and Information Science, based on investigations into LIS curricula at home and abroad. Standard courses that can be applied to this model were also proposed. This study comprehensively analyzed the contents of domestic and foreign curricula and surveyed current librarians in all types of library fields. As a result, this study proposed required courses, core courses, and elective courses. Six required LIS courses are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services, Library and Information Center Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. Six core LIS courses are: Classification & Cataloging Practice, Subject Information Resources, Collection Development, Digital Library, Introduction to Bibliography, and Introduction to Archive Management. Twenty selective LIS courses include: the General Library and Information Science area (Cultural History of Information, Information Society and Library, Library and Copyright, Research Methods in Library and Information Science), the Information Organization area (Metadata Fundamentals, KORMARC Practice), the Information Services area (Information Literacy Instruction, Reading Guidance, Information User Study), the Library and Information Center Management area (Library Management, including management for different kinds of libraries, Library Information Cooperator, Library Marketing, Non-book Material and Multimedia Management (Contents Management), the Information Science area (Database Management, including Web DB Management, Indexing and Abstracting, Introduction to Information Science, Understanding Information Science, Automated System of Library, Library Information Network), and the Archival Science area (Preservation Management).

  • The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the personal experience of Instructor during National Competence Standards (NCS) Curriculum at Department of Library and Information Science. We conducted in depth interview (FGI) with participants who had recently experienced and data analysis was undertaken. We hope this study that an application of NCS would be activated fully in Library, educational institutes and qualifying examination institutes and that diverse feedbacks from related parties would makes leading to a better updated version of NCS development. As a result, First, The instructor had generally familiar with the background and purpose of the NCS. and they issued the inadequacies of job elements, non-reflection of the opinion on field education, the problems of classification of NCS. second, In the experience of NCS curriculum operating, There were the paperwork burden, Problems of methods of evaluation, evaluation period discrimination, the need to well communication with students. Third, In the problems on the NCS Curriculum operating, we found that there were The need on the proper Class size/hour, additional education, re-evaluation, Support system for NCS Curriculum operation, tools for practice, discrimination between relative evaluation and NCS evaluation, Enhancement for Competence/Standards. Fourth, On The ways of improving for NCS curriculum, We found that There were Class size, Support tools for practice, The improvement Competence/elements/standards based on LIS characteristic. The result of this study may contribute for improving the overall environment Based upon FGI analysis, several new directions for NCS education in the filed LIS curriculum are suggested.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the essence and directions of the library and information science education in Korea. For this purpose, first, the introduction and development of library and information science education in Korea was examined in this research; Second, the problems in the library field as well as the academic community of library and information science are analyzed; Third, based on these findings, the essence and directions of developing library and information science education are explored. In this research, an attempt was made to figure out the essence of library science education with the focus on libraries as 'the quality as a facility', not as 'a facility itself.' Furthermore, it was emphasized that Korean Library Association should establish the essence of library and information science education, develop the standard program for educating professional librarians, and improve the certification system and educational institutions for librarians by connecting the library field with the academic community of library and information science.

A Study on Library and Information School's Practical Training Program: Focused on a Case of S Public Library (문헌정보학 분야 공공도서관 실습교육에 관한 연구 - S공공도서관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aimed to analyze the issues on practical training programs at public libraries and propose alternative strategies for them. This study discusses the theoretical bases of providing practical training programs with the recent change in curriculums of library and information studies. It also explores the current status of both practical training program courses offered by the departments of library and information science in Korea, and the operation of programs managed by 42 public libraries. This study categorizes the programs into three types, including basic task type, participatory type, and proactive type, and examines the characteristics of each type. Furthermore, it researches a case of the cooperative public library practice program, which S public library and C University jointly conduct, and analyzes students and librarians' needs who participated in the program. As a result, the study identifies all the parties' challenges and provide a gradual development strategies for the program.
