Perceptions of Academic Journals and Scholarly Events in Library and Information Science: Focus Group Interviews (문헌정보학 분야 학술지 및 학술행사 인식 연구 - 포커스 그룹 면담을 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to investigate the perceptions of researchers and information professionals on scholarly journals and events hosted by the four primary associations for library and information science in Korea and to suggest improvements. The four associations include the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, the Korean Library and Information Science Society, the Korean Society for Information Management, and the Korean Biblia Society for Library and Information Science, and they co-funded this study. A total of six focus group interviews were conducted with 21 university professors, researchers, librarians, practitioners, and executive directors of associations who are actively engaged in research and academic activities. Findings presented, first, that the overall process of the journal article review and publishing needs to be improved to enhance the quality of the journals. Second, efforts should be made to increase the visibility of practice by increasing opportunities for information professionals to submit and publish manuscripts with findings from the field. Third, each journal can be specialized by differentiating the scope of journals, providing articles with findings in practice, and facilitating collaborations with scholars abroad or in other fields. To improve scholarly events, first, a large-scale academic conference can be held regularly, co-hosted by the four associations, promoting academic needs and social networking. Third, each association can specialize in academic events in collaboration with professional institutions and agencies. Fourth, the opportunities to participate in academic events should be increased for early-career researchers, practitioners, and graduate and undergraduate students.

  • The writer tries to propose some characteristics of profession and recommend those of librarianship. In this connection, the writer tries to define 'negative' and 'positive' functions of librarianship as a profession. The writer also aims at classifying various disciplines included in library sciencee Library science has to do with such phases as educational aids, storage and retrieval of knowledge and information, and librarianship itself. The title 'Librarian' carries with it the connotation of 'professional' in the sense that professional tasks require a special knowledge and background, that librarians try to maintain quality service to clients, the knowledge and information are produced, developed, and disseminated via librarians, and that librarians are responsible for continuing education. The fact that the present stage of librarianship is generally known to adhere to negative posture and randomness might permit other institutions to replace the library's role.

Continuing Education for the Library and Information Professionals : Present Situation and Need Assessment (문헌정보전문직을 위한 계속교육에 관한 연구 : 현황과 요구분석)

  • To investigate the present states and analyze the need of continuing education, a survey was done to the library and information professionals. Based on the personal membership file of the Korean Library Association, 292 members were selected using $25\%$ systematic sampling method. Questionnaires were mailed to them and $80\%$ returned. Of the total respondents. $90\%$ want to participate continuing education, however only $50\%$have a formal continuing education experience during last 3 years. Informal educational efforts are also weak and show much individual differences. $67\%$ of the libraries encourage continuing education but only $25\%$ of the respondents were provided with time and money for participation. The most favored mode of the continuing education Is one week course specialized In particular topic$(31.1\%)$ or area$(25.5\%)$. New methods, such as CD-ROM. online etc. were also preferred. Respondents regard professional association, society, and the library Information science department of university as desirable leading organization for continuing education. Among the 16 possible topics to be educated, respondents showed substantially higher Interest(more than $50\%$) In 5topics, and there were significant need differences In 7 topics among groups divided by library type.

  • Information science is the study how in formation is transferred and all the intermediate steps of collecting, organizing, interpreting, storing, retrieving, disseminating and trans foming information. Professional education means the transfer of knowledge, the development of cognitive abilities and the infusion of professional attitudes. Training may be defined as practice-based instruction in the development and use of professional skills. Each is affected by the confluence of social, economic and technological realities of the environment where the learning takes place. We have witnessed controversy about methods of curriculum revision and change. Should information science courses be added to the traditional library science curriculum or should the new approaches be integrated within the subject matter of each individual course? The article is based upon the assumption that education for librarianship is at a turning point. To provide this information, 25 curricula of colleges and universities were analysed to assist in the study. Also 32 information professionals were asked to assist in the study. In the experimental part of this study, curricula based on the education and training of library and information profession als were examined. The most frequently offered compulsory course 'Introduction to Information Science' exposes students to a new way of looking at library and information problems. Information retrieval, library automation, computer programming, data processing, indexing and abstraction, communication, system analysis has offered. These indicate a curriculum slowly shift from traditional librarianship to an emphasis on computerization and automation. Also from a questionnaire listing 58 events might influence library and information science education.

Professional Ethics in Librarianship and Information Works (정보관리와 전문직 윤리)

  • Librarians long ago proclaimed themselves professionals. Until recently, however, librarians and information professionals gave very little thought to professional ethics, which have corne to play an increasingly important role in all areas in modern society. They have been stimulated to consider their specific domain within an ethical context now. Professional norms express obligations which include prescribing standards, principles of responsibilities, and rules of duties. Professional codes attempt to formulate the norms of professional ethics and are the basis for disciplinary measures of various kinds. This paper discusses professional properties and characteristics of libarianship with a special reference to the code of professional ethics. The codes of ethics of the American Library Association, the Library Association, and of the Japanese Library Association have been reviewed and compared. The arguments on the enforcibility of the professional codes of ethics, therefore, on their effectiveness have been discussed. Author concludes that, despite some doubts on the practical effectiveness of the ethics code expressed by a number of scholars, a code of ethics is very much required in the information professions. Properly disseminated, a code would enhance the status and standing of the profession by demonstrating concerns for the maintenance of the highest possible level of standards of professional services. It would also play an important role in raising consciousness of the clients by communicating the value of the works.

A Study of School program in the Case of Library and Information Science in Korea (한국문헌정보학의 학부제 도입에 관한 연구)

  • At present, Korean universities and colleges are confronted with a strong challenge, within and without, demanding a drastic change or innovation of university education. Discussion on the propulsion of the School Program is now under way as one of the means to reform the university education With such a background in mind, we have considered what should be the desirable course of Library and Information Science in Korea. We have considered the characteristic features and roles of library and information professionals to cope with the now approaching information society and the changing conditons of educational environment We have collected the pros and cons among professors of tile School Program, and investigated the curricula of the three universities which are at present practicing the School Program. Of the 139 professors to whom we have sent the questionnaries, $92(66\%)$ responded, of which the pros were 42 and the cons were 45. The model plan for the School Program is 'departmental school program' $(44\%)$, which purports to adopt 'departmental school program', with the curricula and material resources being utilized in common, or to adopt joint-appointment system with the common utilization of teaching materials and the introduction of a limited dual major system. The argument against introduction the School Program was that because of the peculiar nature of the discipline itself, Library and Information Science can not be merged with any other discipline.

A Systematic Review of the Studies on Organizational Socialization (간호학 분야 조직사회화 연구에 대한 체계적 문헌고찰)

  • This study aims to systematically review literature on organizational socialization in the field of nursing. The keywords of 'organizational socialization' and 'nursing' were combined with the AND operator, and the author analyzed the total of 26 journal articles published between 2010 and 2020. The number of journal articles on organizational socialization has increased since 2016, and all the articles took an descriptive study approach. It was found that the variables of resilience, role stress, perception of justice, bullying, professional self-concept, and organizational climate could affect organizational socialization, and the variables of intention to leave, intention on retention, resilience, and organizational commitment could be affected by organizational socialization. The result of this study can be used for guiding organizational socialization research in nursing.

Growth of the Korean Porfessional Librarians (사서직의 전문성과 성장에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret the growth and the present status of Korean librarians using statistical data. The data were collected from various statistics on Korean libraries and were analyzed for a time series The results are : The librarians are not well recognized as professionals in korea. Only a small portion of the library staffs are professionals but professionals are gradually increasing. However, many librarians do not belong to the professional associations or societies. Thus appropriate promotional policy for the professional librarianship is very much desired.

A Study on the Perception of Librarianship Professionalism in Korean Public Library (공공도서관 사서직 전문성 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the direction of librarianship by analyzing differences in Librarian and User perceptions of Librarianship Professionalism. Literature research was used to derive the components of librarianship Professionalism and to conduct surveys on librarians and users. As a result, librarians recognized expert knowledge as the most important factor, while users recognized service attitude as the most important factor. Users recognized that librarians have low social recognition due to their lack of enjoyment, enthusiasm, and challenging spirit and their ability to develop and provide services by understanding user needs and the flow of knowledge. On the other hand, librarians did not actively engage in communication or exchange with users due to their lack of expert knowledge.

  • The diversification of Korean society with a large influx of migrant workers, international marriages, and international students calls for an attention to the importance of cultural competence of Library and Information Science sector in order to respond effectively and appropriately to the needs of immigrants who have diverse cultural backgrounds. In regard to these circumstances, this study is designed to develop the components of cultural competency needed by librarians. For this, this study collected its data through literatures review and interviews with librarians who are implementing services for immigrants in multicultural libraries and with experts who have experienced researches based multicultural services or involved with the management of multicultural families and migrant workers. As a result, the cultural competency components emerging from literatures review and interviews were divided into three parts ; multicultural attitude, multicultural knowledge and multicultural skills. And detailed components of three parts of cultural competency were specifically multicultural attitude, knowledge of multicultural groups, knowledge of multicultural services, development of collections, programs, and services, service delivery, language diversity, and professional education and workforce diversity.
