  • Data Science is emerging as a closely related field of study to Library and Information Science (LIS), and as an interdisciplinary subject combining LIS, statistics and computer science in an attempt to understand the value of data by applying what LIS has been doing for collecting, storing, organizing, analyzing, and utilizing information. To investigate which subject fields other than LIS, statistics, and computer science are related to Data Science, this study retrieved 667 materials from Web of Science Core Collection, extracted terms representing Web of Science Categories, examined subject fields that are studying Data Science using descriptive analysis, analyzed the intellectual structure of the field by co-word analysis and network analysis, and visualized the results as a Pathfinder network with clustering created with the PNNC clustering algorithm. The result of this study might help to understand the intellectual structure of the Data Science field, and may be helpful to give an idea for developing relatively new curriculum.

  • The purpose of the study is to review research trends of information literacy instruction by analyzing 118 journal articles published in the library and information science field in Korea. The study first categorized the literature by year, journal title, type of library, type of researcher, and topic. Then, it analyzed the contents of the literature by 8 sub-topics. The study found that in terms of types of libraries, school libraries were the most frequently studied, and in terms of topics, program development. Research about public libraries was scarce. Based on the findings, the study proposed future directions of research in the information literacy instruction area.

  • The aim of this study was to discover various Library and Information Science (LIS) research areas by examining similarities and differences between LIS journals in terms of keyword characteristics. To conduct this study, for the years from 2004 to 2016, the keywords of 6 international journals were downloaded from Scopus database (http://www.scopus.com), and the keywords of 4 Korean journals were downloaded from the RISS database (http://www.riss.co.kr). The characteristics of keywords were investigated by examining frequently used keywords and frequently used distinctive keywords pertaining to international and Korean journals. The distinctive keywords are referred to as the keywords that appear in one domain but not in another. The result of this study indicated the following: a) a frequency analysis of the keywords showed major research themes and unique traits concerning Korea. b) In general, the keywords used in Korean journals frequently reflected the library as a major subject area of research, while keywords used in international journals reflected bibliometrics and information retrieval as major subject areas of research. c) The overarching themes of each created dataset were clearly noticeable in frequently used distinctive keywords. d) Some keywords were bound by a nation or by a region due to their scope of usage. The important implication of this study is that both most frequently used keywords and most frequently used distinctive keywords seemed to adequately represent the LIS subject areas.

  • Special subject archives in different fields have been established and the related studies have been constantly made so far, but no evaluation index reflecting the characteristics of the archives has yet been developed. Thus, this study intends to develop a draft of the special subject archive operation evaluation index through literature research and propose the special subject archive operation evaluation index through a Delphi survey. A Delphi survey was conducted thrice, with 10 persons in charge of archiving thematic archives in 5 fields. Finally, a special subject archive operation evaluation index consisting of 4 evaluation categories, 10 evaluation items, and 28 detailed items was proposed. This study is significant because it was the first in Korea to develop and propose an operation evaluation index for special subject archives.
