  • Recently, wellness has become an issue related to improvements in personal health and quality of life. Data that are accumulated daily, such as meals and momentum records, in addition to body measurement information such as body weight, BMI and blood pressure have been used to analyze the personal health data of an individual. Therefore, it has become possible to prevent potential disease and to analyze dietary or exercise patterns. In terms of food and nutrition, analyses are performed to evaluate the health status of an individual using dietary data. However, it is very difficult to process the large amount of dietary data. An analysis of dietary data includes four steps, and each step contains a series of iterative tasks that are executed over a long time. This paper proposes a problem solving environment that automates dietary data analysis, and the proposed framework increases the speed with which an experiment can be conducted.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the types and characteristics of the integrative thinking that learners with diverse learning backgrounds use in solving earth science problems. Four students in middle school were surveyed using questionnaires to know students' science learning background and test items with integrated content. A total of 200 items, 40 integrated items and 160 general items, were administered ten times. The students did not show a consistent relationship in terms of correct answer percentage in general items and that of in integrated items. In order to understand the type of integrative thinking of each student, after students solve an item, we analyzed the percentage of correct answers by types and interviewed them and analyzed the contents to identify the characteristics of the thinking used in solving each item. As a result, the types of integrative thinking used in problem solving were classified into three types, knowledge-based, real life-based, and integrated inquiry-based types. It is necessary to study various ways to improve the integrative thinking ability considering the characteristics of students in science teaching and learning.

  • A number of temporal abstraction approaches have been suggested so far to handle the high computational complexity of Markov decision problems (MDPs). Although the structure of temporal abstraction can significantly affect the efficiency of solving the MDP, to our knowledge none of current temporal abstraction approaches explicitly consider the relationship between topology and efficiency. In this paper, we first show that a topological measurement from complex network literature, mean geodesic distance, can reflect the efficiency of solving MDP. Based on this, we build an incremental method to systematically build temporal abstractions using a network model that guarantees a small mean geodesic distance. We test our algorithm on a realistic 3D game environment, and experimental results show that our model has subpolynomial growth of mean geodesic distance according to problem size, which enables efficient solving of resulting MDP.

  • The object of this research provides the empirical case about the clinic as meaning the supplement learning and mentions the necessity in the university mathematics. The mathematics clinic is comprised of the tutoring and the problem solving. The purpose of the tutoring, it does with the main value the interaction learning among members to exceed the individual-centered learning form, is increase the academic achievement. In the case of the problem solving, the goal is to give the motivation that they can solved by oneself. The effects that mathematics clinic reaches to the academic achievement were tested from the operation case of H university. In the results, two-programs were meaningfully improved the academic achievement and particularly this effect was excellent in the students participating two programs altogether. In addition, the problem solving reached the immediate effect on the academic achievement more than the tutoring program.
