  • In this thesis, we introduce a parsing method which use information of the post position in Korean to get the exact parsing tree. In order to implement this method we classified categories of the predicates, and defined sentence-types based on these categories. We tried to make parsing using the method grasping the grammatical role of the noun phrase that have to exist in each sentence-type. In parser control mechanism, we use some heuristics based on linguistic frame. We use conditional unification to implement analysis. It is Possible to reduce ambiguous because the parsing method suggested helps to Prune the branches which are unnecessary.

  • Structures of stories, paragraphs, and sentences and inferences applied to indexing and searching were studied to construct the full-text and sentence retrieval system for storytelling. The system designed the database of stories, paragraphs, and sentences and the knowledge-base of inference rules to aid to write the story. The Knowledge-base comprised the files of story frames, paragraph scripts, and sentence logics made by mark-up languages like SWRL etc. able to operate in semantic web. It is necessary to establish more precise indexing language represented the sentences and to create a mark-up languages able to construct more accurate inference rules.

  • This study aims to clarify the prosodic differences in speech types by examining the Korean read speech and spontaneous speech in the Korean part of the L2 Korean Speech Corpus (speech corpus for Korean as a foreign language). To this end, the articulation length, articulation speed, pause length and frequency, and the average fundamental frequency values of sentences were set as variables and analyzed via statistical methodologies (t-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis). The results found that read speech and spontaneous speech were structurally different in the form of prosodic phrases constituting each sentence and that the prosodic elements differentiating each speech type were articulation length, pause length, and pause frequency. The statistical results show that the correlation between articulation speed and articulation length was highest in read speech, explaining that the longer a given sentence is, the faster the speaker speaks. In spontaneous speech, however, the relationship between the articulation length and the pause frequency in a sentence was high. Overall, spontaneous speech produces more pauses because short intonation phrases are continuously built to make a sentence, and as a result, the sentence gets lengthened.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the structures of teacher's discourse according to the pattern of interaction between teachers and students in the understanding mathematical word problem. The structures of teacher's discourse could be conceptualized as a process in which the teacher starts, develops and organizes the discourse based on prior research. For this purpose, the fourth class(example, a problem of the same type as the example, formative assessment, and final assessment) was extracted from one semester of experienced teachers who have been practicing teaching methods to facilitate student participation for many years. A methodology used to develop a theory based on data collected through classroom observations. Because the purpose of the study is to identify the structures of teacher's discourse to help the problem understanding, observe the teacher's discourse and collect data based on student engagement. Results show that the structure of teacher's discourse, which consults on important aspects of interaction between teachers-students and creates mathematical meanings, helped students understand the mathematics word problem by promoting their engagement in class. Based on the structures of teacher's discourse to understand problems based on the interaction patterns between teachers and students, it can be said that teachers provided specific methodologies on how to communicate with students in order to understand problems in the future.

  • It has been pointed out that the mathematics textbooks according to 2009 revised national curriculum cause difficulty not by mathematical knowledge but concomitantly by words and sentences for the first graders who just started learning Korean alphabets. This study focused on the suitability of words and sentences in mathematics textbooks for elementary first grade. We analyzed the degree of difficulty and familiarity in terms of words and the structure, length, and expression in terms of sentences. The results show some causes that lead the first graders to the difficulty. In more detail, we found 108 difficult words and 6 unfamiliar words for the first graders. And it is noticed that the textbooks contain 37 compound sentences, 727 complex sentences, and 38 compound-complex sentences. They also contain 237 long sentences that are composed of 9 words or more, 168 sentences that assign two activities or more, and 52 sentences that contain three nouns or adjectives or more successively. Based on these results and discussions, we suggested several implications for writing mathematics textbooks for the lower grades in elementary school.

  • According to the original chart parsing algorithm, a sentence is parsed in a strict left-to-right order. The modified chart parsing algorithm proposed in this paper breaks the strictness. With the proposed algorithm, a sentence is parsed in a random order. Conventional left-to-right parsing is also possible, since left-to-right parsing is a special case of random-order parsing. The proposed parsing algorithm is an extension of chart parsing algorithm and its control structure is very simple, so that it is easy to implement the algorithm.
