  • This study aims to propose measures to support students' English literacy development in collaboration with public libraries in the community. The literature review shows that students can improve their English literacy skills by not only reading authentic books, but also participating in English literacy programs at the public library. The analysis of the gathered data reveals that public libraries provide extensive programs customized to students' needs. It is also shown that reading programs at the public libraries play an important role in improving students' literacy skills. With the analysis of the literacy programs at various libraries nationwide or abroad, we can understand the importance of the English literacy programs. Especially English Literacy programs in public libraries can be more effective to improve students' English literacy skills. It is suggested that we need to support children's literacy development in collaboration with public libraries in the community.

  • Biometric systems are forms of technology that use unique human physical characteristics to automatically identify a person. They have sensors to pick up some physical characteristics, convert them into digital patterns, and compare them with patterns stored for individual identification. However, lip-print recognition has been less developed than recognition of other human physical attributes such as the fingerprint, voice patterns, retinal at blood vessel patterns, or the face. The lip print recognition by a CCD camera has the merit of being linked with other recognition systems such as the retinal/iris eye and the face. A new method using multi-resolution architecture is proposed to recognize a lip print from the pattern kernels. A set of pattern kernels is a function of some local lip print masks. This function converts the information from a lip print into digital data. Recognition in the multi-resolution system is more reliable than recognition in the single-resolution system. The multi-resolution architecture allows us to reduce the false recognition rate from 15% to 4.7%. This paper shows that a lip print is sufficiently used by the measurements of biometric systems.

  • Biometrics is a study of identifying individual by using the features of human body. It has been studied for an alternative or complementary method for the classical method based on password, ID card, etc. In comparison with the fingerprint, iris, ear, palmprint, finger-knuckle print has been recently studied. This paper proposes an effective method for recognizing finger-knuckle print based on the feature of Gradient orientation. The main features of finger-knuckle print are the size and direction of winkles. In order to extract these features stably, we make a feature vector consisted of Gradient orientations after the preprocessing of enhancing non-uniform brightness and low contrast. Total 790 images acquired from 158 persons have been used at the experiment for evaluating the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show the recognition rate of 99.69% and the relatively high decidability index of 1.882. These results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in recognizing finger-knuckle print.

  • This study aims at investigating Korean EFL students' writing strategies through their rhetorical patterns and meaning-making for a writing task in an English writing classroom at a Korean university. The participants were the students and teacher in the course, and the data comprised nine pieces of students' opinion writing and interviews with the teacher. To analyze the data, a 'Claim-Support' pattern was adopted. The findings show that most students, 89%, demonstrated the same or similar elements in the 'Claim-Support' pattern for their textual structures and many parts of the meaning-making in their writing were originated from the textbook. These findings reflect that the students pursued the strategy of 'accommodation' in order to succeed in their academic writing regardless of the teacher's intention which focused on creativity and imagination in writing. The conclusion suggest that the students tend to establish their own ways of strategy to cope with the recontextualized setting for writing in English.

  • In this study, the calculation of the effective spatial dose distribution of the diagnostic imaging laboratory of K university was performed by the Monte Carlo simulation. The radiation generator has a maximum tube voltage of 150 kVp and a maximum current of 700 mA. Using the results, we compared the spatial effective dose distributions of diagnostic imaging laboratory when the shielding door was closed and opened. In conclusion, it was found that the effective dose in the operating room of the diagnostic imaging laboratory does not exceed the annual dose limit (6 mSv/y) of the student (occasional visitor) even when the door is opened. However, since the effective dose when the door is open is about 16 times higher in front of the lead glass window and about 3,000 times higher in front of the doorway than the case when the door is closed, closing the shielding door at the time of the practical exercising reduces unnecessary radiation exposure by great extent.

  • In my previous article "The Uncontested Principle and Wonbae Choi's Objections", I argued that the validity of modus ponens (as a deductive inference) is compatible with the claim that the Uncontested Principle is controversial. In his recent paper "The Uncontested Principle and Modus Ponens", Wonbae Choi criticizes my view again by making the following three claims: First, even though I do not take an inference of the form 'If A then (probably) C. A. $\therefore$ C' as an instance of modus ponens, this form of inference can be taken to be such an instance. Second, there is no grammatical indicator which allows us to distinguish between an indicative conditional based on a deductive inference and an indicative conditional based on an inductive inference, so that inferences based on these conditionals should not be treated as different types of inferences. Third, if we allow an indicative conditional based on an inductive inference, we thereby violate the so-called 'principle of harmony', which any logical concept should preserve. In this paper, I reply that his criticisms are all implausible.

  • Implicit citation sentence recognition is to locate citation sentences which lacks explicit citation markers, from articles' full-text. State-of-the-art approaches exploit word ngrams, clue words, researcher's surnames, mentions of previous methods, and distance relative to nearest explicit citation sentences, etc., reaching over 50% performance. However, most previous works have been conducted on English. As for Korean, a rule-based method using positive/negative clue patterns was reported to attain the performance of 42%, requiring further improvement. This study attempted to learn to recognize implicit citation sentences from Korean literatures' full-text using Korean lexical features. Different lexical feature units such as Eojeol, morpheme, and Eumjeol were evaluated to determine proper lexical features for Korean implicit citation sentence recognition. In addition, lexical features were combined with the position features representing backward/forward proximities to explicit citation sentences, improving the performance up to over 50%.

  • Java bytecodes are executed not on target machine but on the Java virtual machines. Since this bytecodes use a higher level representation than binary code, it is possible to decompile most bytecodes back to Java source. Obfuscation is the technique of obscuring code and it makes program difficult to understand. However, most of the obfuscation techniques make the code size and the performance of obfuscated program bigger and slower than original program. In this paper, we proposed an effective Java obfuscation techniques using assignment statements merging that make the source program difficult to understand. The basic approach is to merge assignments statements to append side effects of statement. An additional benefit is that the size of the bytecode is reduced.

  • This study is intended to develop a numeracy program for late-adult learners. For this study, firstly, characteristics of numeracy were analyzed and based on those characteristics, numeracy learning contents for late-adult learners were selected. Also, teaching and learning materials were developed by linking the mathematics contents selected to experience-based real lives of late-adult learners. When this numeracy program was applied to late-adult learners, it was observed that there was a change in the affective domain like interest at the early stage of learning and that as learning continued, mathematical elaboration occurred by way of mathematical formalization. In conclusion, this study has significance by re-defining arithmetic for late-adults from a perspective of numeracy, based on experience of late-adults, and making a contribution to mathematical elaboration of late-adult learners so non-formal problem-solving processes of lat-adult learners can be justified as elaborate mathematical problem-solving.

  • This study aimed at providing a comprehensive account of the sources and causes of errors in business emails that Korean college students wrote using a translation machine. Data were collected from 21 emails written by the students who took a business English course. Findings indicated that the students tended to make frequent errors in verb use and verb tense as well as a definite article, countable/noncountable nouns, time adverbs and prepositions. Therefore, the study suggested that the students' common errors imply that they experience some difficulties learning these linguistic features. Given that learners' errors can give us valuable insights into teaching and learning how to write in English, pedagogical suggestions are put forward based on the study results.
