A Comparative Study on the Compliance Program of Strategic Trade and Similar Systems in Korea (한국의 전략물자 자율준수체제와 유사제도에 관한 비교연구)

  • This study suggests an improvement for stable and effective management of the Compliance Program of strategic trade(CP) by comparing and analyzing the program and other similar systems in Korea, the authorized economic operator(AEO) system and the Fair Trade Compliance Program. To improve the CP, training requirements should be materialized, evaluation of companies' ability to judge strategic materials should be intensified, and incentives should be offered to the companies that actively adopt the program. Moreover, the current designation system should be changed to the designation-after-registration system to strengthen and spread out the CP, and the follow-up management should be reinforced for successful management of the program.

A Comparative Study on the Export Similarity Index (ESI) and Trade Competitiveness Index (TCI) of Korean Construction Machinery with China and the U.S.A (한국 건설기계의 수출유사성지수(ESI) 및 무역경쟁력지수(TCI) 연구 - 중국 및 미국과의 비교 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • This study examined the trend of international competitiveness over the past 10 years (2011-2020), focusing on comparative analysis with China and the United States, targeting seven major export items of Korean construction machinery based on 6 units of HS code. To this end, the export similarity index and trade competitiveness index were calculated and analyzed using UN Comtrade and Korea International Trade Association trade statistics. As a result of the analysis, competition between Korea and China has intensified over the past decade, and competition with the United States has remained at a certain level. Korean forklifts (8427.20) are exporting to the world with strong competitiveness in the global market. Excavators (8429.52) and loaders (8429.51), which have the largest export share of Korean construction machinery, have a weight advantage, but they are exporting due to price inferiority. The rest of the items were found to be inferior in price and weight, and were not competitive in the global market. These analysis results suggest the following implications. First, it is necessary to strengthen efforts to expand exports of universal construction machinery items, which are expected to increase in demand in the future, by boosting the economy and expanding infrastructure investment in accordance with eco-friendly policies. Second, excavators, which have been shown to have a quality advantage and a price competitive advantage, need to further strengthen export marketing activities not only in China and the United States but also in emerging developing countries.

  • In recent years, the world's free trade system has been severely damaged by a series of protectionist measures in the United States and anti-globalization practices such as Brexit. Against this background, RCEP, the world's largest trade agreement, was officially signed on November 15, 2021. The RCEP provided a good working basis for the establishment of a Korea, China, and Japan free trade zone. First, this paper describes the current status of Korea-China-Japan trade cooperation and the current status of the trilateral telecommunication industry. Second, this paper simulates the changes in the overall economy of China, Japan, and Korea when tariffs are reduced to 0%, 5%, and 10%, respectively, after the establishment of a free trade zone using the 8th edition GTAP database. Then, using the simulated data changes and using the 2019 data as a benchmark, we calculated the changes in the RCA index for the three countries' telecommunications industries for the three tax rates. In the end, it is concluded that the economies of the three countries will grow to different levels in many ways when the Korea, China, and Japan free trade zone is established. Japan's telecommunications industry will not be significantly affected, Korea will grow significantly with higher tax rates and China will grow significantly with lower tax rates.

Changes in athleisure wear trade networks - A social network approach - (애슬레저 웨어의 무역 네트워크 변화 - 사회연결망 분석 -)

  • As the spread of the health and wellness trend continues worldwide, many consumers are spending much time on sports activities and expressing their individuality through sportswear. This study analyzes the trade networks of major exporters and importers of athleisure wear to provide an exporting policy for Korean apparel companies. As a result, The USA was found to import the most athleisure wear. On the other hand, China had the largest number of athleisure wear exports, and India's exports, which are becoming increasingly important as apparel producers were notable. Next, using the concept of the centrality of social network analysis, it was found that the USA was the largest importer and the center of athleisure wear's export network, but its influence has decreased gradually since 2010. China has the highest out-degree and betweenness centrality and center in the export of athleisure wear. The centrality of Asian countries such as India and Vietnam has increased. In Korea, the import of athleisure wear has increased greatly, but the export of athleisure wear has continuously decreased. Korea has less price competitiveness than other developing countries in Asia, but many Korean athleisure wear clothing brands are now attracting popularity not only in Korea but also in other countries with their excellent technology and design. In the future, the exporting policy of Korea's athleisure wear should focus on high value-added and differentiated products.

The Differences in the Selection of Outward FDI Locations between State- and Privately Owned Enterprises of China: Focusing on the Effects of Host Country Factors (중국 국유기업과 민간기업 간 해외직접투자 입지 차이 분석: 현지국 요인의 영향을 중심으로)

  • In recent years, Chinese firms have explosively increased outward foreign direct investment (oFDI). While state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are still dominant in Chinese oFDI, privately-owned enterprises (POEs) are also accelerating their internationalization. These two types of Chinese firms differ in their behavior regarding oFDI. The objective of this paper is to analyze the differences in the choice of oFDI locations between Chinese SOEs and POEs by considering host country factors. By integrating the literature on Chinese firms' oFDI and on FDI locations, we developed six hypotheses concerning how host country factors affect their choice of location. We tested our hypotheses by conducting multiple regression analysis with recent secondary data on 413 Chinese MNEs in 88 countries between 2005 and 2016. The results of the test show that in selecting oFDI locations, Chinese SOEs invest relatively more in countries with richer natural resources, more abundant strategic assets, less production efficiency, higher political risk, and lower institutional quality compared with Chinese POEs. It is our hope that the empirical results of this paper will contribute to research on Chinese oFDI.

  • In recent years, most companies are making strategic strides to respond to changes in the competitive landscape. This trend is proceeding independently from industry to industry, and the Chinese cosmetics industry, which is at its peak, is no exception. In the meantime, the question of whether the concept of strategy group and related theories are suitable for advanced markets and whether they are applicable to emerging markets such as China is an interesting subject of inquiry. The purpose of this study is to classify strategic groups based on the cognitive approach of CEO's in the Chinese cosmetics industry. Some of the existing studies on strategic groups have raised limitations on the theoretical validity of the classification and criteria of strategic groups. However, since the concept of the strategic group becomes a middle level analysis unit between the enterprise and the industry, applying this concept to the Chinese cosmetic industry will help identify the strategic group existing in the industry and grasp the composition of the entire industry.

An Empirical Study on the Status and Performance of FTA Utilization in Shandong Province, China (중국 산동성의 FTA 활용현황과 성과에 관한 실증연구)

  • Purpose - This study analyzed the correlation and effect of FTA environmental factors (company internal environmental factors, corporate external environmental factors) between FTA utilization and performance of Shandong companies in China. Design/methodology/approach - To test the hypothesis, SPSS 24.0 statistical packages were used based on the collected data. Findings - First, it was confirmed that internal environmental factors (international marketing orientation, corporate competitiveness, and corporate awareness of FTA) of companies had a positive(+) effect on FTA utilization. Second, The government's support for FTA utilization will have a significant positive (+) effect on companies' FTA utilization.Non-tariff barriers will have a negative (-) effect on companies' use of FTA. Third, A company's FTA utilization will have a significant positive effect on FTA performance. Research implications or Originality - If Shandong companies want to increase the utilization of FTAs, they should strengthen international marketing, such as collecting information on competitors and improving product quality and price competitiveness, and increase corporate competitiveness through active export activities to the global market.In order to increase the awareness of FTA among enterprises in Shandong Province, the government should strengthen the relevant education of enterprises about FTA.

  • Purpose - This study investigate the effect of innovative capacity on corporate export performance and moderating flexibility. Design/methodology/approach - For this, hypotheses were established by reviewing previous studies and an empirical analysis was conducted for testing. Using SPSS 22.0, a frequency analysis of related variables was conducted. Through an exploratory factor analysis, validity and reliability tests of measuring tools were conducted and a descriptive statistics was analyzed for collected data result and hypotheses testing. Findings - Finally, with a verified model, the hypotheses and the moderating effects were tested. The results are as follows; The innovationa capacities have a positive effect on export performance and flexibility However, the flexbilitiy was not moderator in the relationship between innovative capacity and export performance. Research implications or Originality - According to the results above, this study presents directions to improve export performance of technological innovative type SMEs. Determinants of Household Water Conservation: The Role of Consumers' Water Value Perception and Reasoned Action (소비자의 가치 인식과 합리적 행위에 기반한 가정에서의 물 절약 행동에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study aims to identify effective ways to induce water resources conservation for general water consumers. Methods: In order to find the core factors to motivate water saving behavior for general consumers, this study utilized the theory of reasoned action which is well known as one of the most frequently used theory in consumer's green behavior analysis. Results: Among six hypothesized relationships in the research model four were proved to be statistically significant. The relationship between attitude toward water savings and the water saving behavior was found to be significant but only through the behavioral intention. Conclusion: Consumers with positive attitude on water conservation will practice water saving behavior with behavioral intention. However, consumers only with high knowledge on water conservation naturally and habitually practice water saving behavior without recognizing the intention to save the water. Thus, both positive attitude on the water conservation and subjective norm must be satisfied since the two factors tend to lead to actual green behavior using different psychological routes.

Strategies to Expand SMEs ESG Management through Domestic and Foreign ESG Cases (국내외 ESG 사례를 통해 본 중소기업 ESG 경영 활성화 방안)

  • Purpose - This study is aim to stimulate ESG management of SMEs in Korea with SWOT analysis. Presently, ESG is also affecting a company's supply chain and sales. We tried to make the complementary point of Korea SMEs through domestic and foreign cases. Design/methodology/approach - We divide foreign cases into three countries, and in Korea, also divide into three groups of government, major companies, SMEs to conduct SWOT analysis. Findings - We confirmed that ESG activities were delayed in Korea compared to overseas, but the government and major companies were responding quickly. However, SMEs are complaining of difficulties in ESG activities due to cost issues and limited information. Nevertheless, some SMEs companies show the possibility by carrying out ESG activities based on their own strengths. Research implications or Originality - We suggested the need for SMEs' ESG management. The SMEs are inevitably vulnerable to ESG management compared to other groups. Therefore, We suggested the direction of SMEs ESG management expansion, that are R&D and distribution of eco-friendly activities through collaboration with universities(E), social program to improve working places(S), and expansion of governance that guarantees autonomy(G).
