  • This study aims to analyze the usefulness of the survey procedures developed for telephone surveys using a random sampling method. We conducted a telephone survey of residents in a local area from October 26 to November18,2009. We applied random sampling procedures with five call-backs. Particular attention was given to the conversion of refusals. Out of 2,454 phone numbers, we succeeded in getting responses from 637 numbers. The absence of residents was the primary cause of non-response. We received responses from 45.7% of those with whom we successfully made contact. One finding of this study is that, contrary to our initial expectations, call-backs do not significantly increase the percentage of responses from young people. Also we cannot find any significant differences in responses to various questions between the responses received from the first round of calls and later responses. However, these results are not conclusive; another survey may produce different results. Therefore, further research is needed.

  • This paper examined the electoral polling methodologies such as sampling method, sampling frame and the classification of the don't-know responses. Quota sampling method seemed to be one of the major factors for the declining trust in the poll results. We suggested that new procedures for random sampling as well as the bad number screening procedures for RDD selection of phone numbers need to be developed. Also we reviewed how the KBS used the polls in defining voters' agenda and in communicating the public agenda to the candidates. In Korea, rates for the polls were based mainly on the number of interviews completed. It seemed to keep the polling companies from tim new and more time-demanding polling methods. Also various utilization of the polls are limited by the tendency to keep the questionnaire short.

  • The experience sampling method (ESM) is an innovative research method to study the immediate real emotional experience experienced in real life through the immediate reaction of research participants. ESM, which has received significant attention in recent, is considered as the research method particularly for child care teachers' emotions and happiness. This method has been shown to be able to overcome the limitations in current research methods, based on teachers' recall or surveys, in assessing child care teachers' emotional states or stress levels. Despite the expectation that the need for further research on the increased stress and negative emotional experiences of child care teachers and its appropriateness as the alternative research method to study child care teachers' immediate emotional experience, ESM has deficiencies in that research participants need to have their pencil-and-paper survey packages on hand whenever their electronic beepers randomly beep. Furthermore, ESM demands much more researcher energy and efforts to handle the voluminous data collected from each participant in effectively creating a database. In this paper, in order to apply ESM successfully to the study of child care teachers' emotional experience, we aim to develop a software program that uses mobile communication technology. Given that traditional types of data collection methods in social science research can prove too burdensome to encourage participation in surveys in the first place or ensure the return of completed surveys, the present study adopts a convergent research approach to develop a software program that is able to obtain ESM participants' answers immediately on their personal smart phones. This study deals with system construction and prototyping for software development as a basic research and evaluates the research results through indepth interview with experts.

  • The purpose of this study was to systematically review music intervention studies for patients with schizophrenia. The researcher searched nine electronic databases for clinical trials published since 2000, using combinations of keyword related to schizophrenia and music interventions. The initial search identified 272 studies, and fifteen studies were selected by reviewing the titles, abstracts and full articles, In addition, three articles were added by examining other review articles. Thus, a total of 18 articles were analyzed in terms of their general and intervention characteristics, and the PEDro scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. The results demonstrated that, due to the lack of randomization and blinding, the methodological qualities of the studies with high quality music interventions were often rated low. Eight Music interventions conducted by qualified music therapists included active music-making, therapeutic relationship, and supervision systems for improving intervention quality. In conclusion, the randomization, blinding, and the therapeutic rationale of intervention are recommended in future clinical trials for patients with schizophrenia.
