  • This study was designed to identify the relationships among powerlessness, self-esteem and depression in Korean-American immigrant elderly. The purpose was to provide baseline data for nursing intervention to improve their health. The results showed that depression was significantly correlated with self-esteem and powerlessness, self-esteem was also significantly correlated with powerlessness. Powerlessness was different from the level of education and health conditions. Self-esteem was significantly different to the frequency of family visits. Depression was significantly different from age. 50.0% of depression was explained by powerlessness and self-esteem. This suggests that a higher level of powerlessness and a lower level of self-esteem are associated with a higher the level of depression. In conclusion, to improve the psychological health of Korean-American immigrant elderly, it is crucial to consider age, the level of education and health conditions, and continually manage the levels of powerlessness and self-esteem.

By searching for methods to improve the quality of life for the elderly, efficient nursing procedures can be developed, thereby leading to successful aging. For the study, we purposively collected 300 elderly above the age of 65, residing in the areas of Seoul, Inchon, and Daejeon. 266 samples, survived the data screening, were analyzed by reliability analysis, Spearman correlation, and a multiple regression. As the results, first, the correlated factors of the elderly's powerlessness included depression(r=.597, p<.01), loneliness (r=.423, p<.01), ability of daily living activity(r=.374, p<.01), perceived health status(r=-.304, p<.01), family support(r=-.384, p<.01), and self-esteem(r=-.420, p<.01). Second, factors influencing of powerlessness of them were to show in order of depression(β=.373), loneliness(β=.265), spouse(β=.099), family support(β=.090), monthly allowances(β=.013), these variables accounted for 45.7% of the variance of the elderly's powerlessness. Depression showed to be the most important of the powerlessness factors for the elderly. These findings suggest that nursing researchers need to consider important factors affecting the elderly's powerlessness and nursing interventions focusing on the issues need to be developed.

  • This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between clinical practice powerlessness and career identity among dental hygiene students with clinical practice experience in the IoT. A questionnaire was conducted on 172 dental hygiene students in a university located in Chungcheong area. For data analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted to exam the relationships between clinical practice powerlessness, self-esteem, and career identity. Baron & Kenny's three-step mediation analysis was used to investigate the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between clinical practice powerlessness and career identity. The results of this study showed that the clinical practice powerlessness showed significant negative correlations with both self-esteem and career identity, and self-esteem showed a positive correlation with career identity. Partial mediating effects of self-esteem were found between clinical practice powerlessness and career identity. Thus, since self-esteem mediates the relationship between clinical practice powerlessness and career identity, it's essential to implement online-based programs aimed at increasing self-esteem among dental hygiene students before they participate in clinical practice.

  • When people feel powerless (with losing control), they show compensatory behaviors to get out of this state. The actions to compensate for powerlessness have been studied in the contexts of products or brands, but this study focuses on compensatory behaviors when using social media. Social media, which can express consumers' selves freely, has become a platform for self-expansion. It has been confirmed that the possibility of relieving psychological powerlessness through self-expression on social media exists. Therefore, we examined how people who felt powerless showed compensatory behaviors on social media. According to the analysis, consumer's powerlessness does not directly affect narcissistic self-expression on social media. However, it is derived as being fully mediated by the feeling of anxiety. The more anxious consumers feel, the more narcissistic they express themselves by posting photos of themselves with luxury brand objects that can show social power or authority. In other words, when consumers experience social powerlessness coupled with anxiety, they are likely to show compensatory consumption behaviors such as narcissistic self-expression in order to make their images cool and luxurious and draw others' attention on social media. We confirm that the compensatory consumption due to consumers' powerlessness, which leads to having anxiety, can appear in ways of presenting narcissistic selves on social media.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of gardening programs using vertical gardens on helplessness, depression, and self-esteem in patients with chronic mental disorders. This study was applied to 21 patients with chronic mental disorder who were admitted to the rehabilitation hospital of E Hospital in Seoul from June to October 2018. The group was treated as an experimental group (N = 21) 5 times a week. For 20 weeks, each session lasted 30 minutes. Patients in the experimental group programmed 4 sessions of general occupational therapy, which combined treatments to improve cognition and training, and 1 session of a horticultural program using a vertical garden. Helplessness, depression, and self-esteem were evaluated for pre and post evaluation of the horticultural program. After completing the program, the average score of helplessness in the experimental group decreased by 0.91 points from 47.38 to 46.47, and there was a statistically significant change (p=0.043). The mean score of depression in the experimental group was 9.23 before and after 9.08, which was statistically significant (p = 0.035). The average score of self-esteem in the experimental group increased by 3.14 points from 27.99 to 31.13 at a statistically significant level (p = 0.001). This result suggests that a gardening program using vertical gardens has an effect on helplessness, depression, and self-esteem in patients with chronic mental disorders. And this means that long-term plans and effective programs for recovery from chronic mental disorders to the community are needed. With a horticultural work program using a vertical garden, the helplessness of the mentally impaired in a closed treatment space is restored, and such treatment space needs to be increased.

A survey was conducted on 237 people in 6 nursing hospitals in G city from July 1 to August 15, 2018, and analyzed with SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. As a result of the research, the direct effect on the happiness index is the greatest factor, Next, perceived health status, economic status, and nursing satisfaction are in order, and the explanatory power is 66%. Both direct and indirect economic conditions were found to have a significant effect, and hospitalization period only had indirect effects through helplessness and nursing satisfaction. Therefore, development and application of various programs that can reduce the feeling of helplessness and improve the perceived health status. It is believed that an integrated management system, such as support system support and nursing intervention, suitable for each individual situation is needed.
