  • In the present study, stiffness prediction methodologies for flat-plate structures were evaluated in comparison with the experimental results on the full-scale slab-column connections of flat-plate structures. The methodologies are as follows: the methodology proposed by Jacob S. Grossman and the methodology proposed by Choi & Song. The former does not predict the stiffness change of the slab-column connection due to the change in the column section shape and the latter overestimates the stiffness when edge length of the column section in the loading direction is long. In the present study, the equation to calculate the effective width of slabs was modified to reflect the effect of the change in the column section shape.

  • Wind-induced vibration is one of the important structural design factors for serviceability of tall buildings. In order to evaluate the reliable wind-loads and wind induced-vibration, it is necessary to obtain the exact natural period of buildings. The discrepancy in the natural period estimation often results in the overestimation of wind loads. In this study, the effectiveness of lateral stiffness estimation method for tall buildings with flat plate system is evaluated. For this purposed, the results of finite element analysis of three recently constructed buildings are compared with those obtained from field measurement. For the analysis, factors affecting on the lateral resistance such as cracked stiffness of vertical members, elastic modulus of concrete, effective slab width, and cracked stiffness of link beam are considered. Form the results, it is found that the use of non-cracked stiffness and application of dynamic modulus of elasticity rather than initial secant modulus yields closer analysis result to the as-built period.

  • In this study 3- and 6-story flat plate structures designed only for gravity load are retrofitted with steel plates and braces and their seismic performances are evaluated to verify the effect of seismic retrofit. According to the analysis results obtained from nonlinear static and dynamic analyses both the strength and stiffness are significantly enhanced as a result of the seismic retrofit. Especially the effect of column jacketing could be enhanced significantly when slabs were reinforced to prevent premature punching shear failure. When buckling-restrained braces are used instead of conventional braces, the structures showed more ductile behavior, especially in the 3-story structure.

  • This paper evaluates seismic capacities of slab-column joints in flat plate system which has columns with various aspect ratio as experimental parameters. Continuous - bended shear reinforcements were applied for the prevention of punching shear failure in this study. The specimens of FIS1-05, FIS1-10, and FIS1-20 have the aspect ratio of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 respectively. Static lateral force was applied to the specimens in a horizontal direction and vertical load was applied by constant gravity load ratio. The test results were evaluated by lateral displacement and strength of slab-column joint. Consequently, the lateral resisting capacity of rectangular type column such as FIS1-05, FIS1-20 is superior to the square type column such as FIS1-10.

  • This study performs an experimental investigation to evaluate the behavior of RC flat plate interior joints specimens. Three 60 percent scale Flat Plate interior specimens assemblies representing a portion of a Flat Plate Apartment Structural System subjected to simulated seismic loading (unbalanced moments) under constant axial load were tested, including one specimens with ordinary shear reinforcement and two specimens with folded bend type shear reinforcement. Test results are shown that (1) the design code KBC 2009 is accurate estimate the behavior of specimens. (2) Two types shear reinforcement have a similar structural behavior, but construction work of rebar with folded bend type shear reinforcement is easier than that of ordinary shear reinforcement. (3) In moderate seismic region, RC Flat Plate interior joint with folded bend type shear reinforcement is apply to structural design of Flat Plate.

  • Flat plate-column connections are susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in collapse of the overall structure. In the present study, a new shear reinforcement for the plate-column connection, the lattice shear reinforcement was developed. Experimental study for the lattice shear reinforcement was performed. Shear strength and ductility of the specimens reinforced with the lattice bars were compared with those of unreinforced specimens. The test results showed that the strength and ductility of the specimens with the lattice shear reinforcement were improved by 1.37 and 9.16 times those of the unreinforced specimens, respectively. These results indicates that the lattice shear reinforcement is superior in ductility to the shear stud-rail which is popular in U.S. Based on the test results, the design method for the lattice shear reinforcement was developed.

  • In the flat-plate slab design of the KCI and ACI building code, the punching shear strength of connections with shear reinforcement can increase one and half times to that of connections without shear reinforcement. And the ACI-ASCE committee 352 recommendations propose limiting the direct shear ratio $V_g$/$V_c$ on interior connections to 0.4 to insure adequate drift capacity. In this study, four interior column-slab connections were tested to look into the punching shear strength and the lateral displacement capacity of the flat-plate slab with and without shear reinforcement under cyclic lateral loading. Based on the test results, it is found that the provision about punching shear strength in the codes may appropriate for the gravity loading only whereas it is unconservative for the lateral loading and that the limit of ACI-ASCE committee 352 appears conservative.

  • For the seismic performance enhancement of residential flat plate structure and for the selection of earthquake records, the possibility of base isolation is evaluated and the time history results are reviewed. By evaluating a base isolated stiffness, a target period, and an envelope curve analysis, seismic performance of structure, which has strong rotational mode, is evaluated. For the propriety evaluation of earthquake records usage and scaling method, time history analysis is done with variables such as DBE(design base earthquake) level, MCE(maximum considerable earthquake) level, and 1.4DBE level. From the analysis results, following conclusions can be made; the earthquake records, which are used in base isolation analysis, should be selected by similar soil type which the structure is considered, and should be intensity scaled in a range of mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation of code based design response spectrum.

  • Flat plate structures are designed in the form of long span due to the development of construction materials and the improvement of construction technology. However, a high-rise structure of a flat plate of 50 less floors is constructed without detailed review of the inequality shortening, long-term deflection of the slab, and cracks. Therefore, it is possible to examine the case of defects in the structure due to deformation and damage of non-structures such as crack and leak, deflection of the door frame, and deformation of equipment ducts. In this study, it is a high-rise structure, and the inequality shortening and long-term deflection of the slab of the flat plate structure were evaluated through finite element analysis, and it was confirmed that prior precision analysis and correction during construction is necessary.
