  • The guidelines for the treatment of massive bone defects caused by bone resection due to tumors have changed from amputation to limb salvaging surgery. Limb salvaging surgery using endoprotheses is a well-established procedure. However, Aseptic loosening, infection, and mechanical defect remain significant problems. Among them, we experienced the case with a breakage of polyethylene lock of MUTARS$^{(R)}$ distal femur tumor Endoprostheses.

Investigations on Sex Ratio of offspring in Swine (돼지의 산자성비에 대한 조사)

  • This study was carried out ot examine the sex ratios of offspring in swine. The sex ratios were obtained on the basis of the data from 15,892 pigs produced by 1,728 litters of Landrace, Large Yorkshire, Hampshire and Duroc breeds at National Animal Breeding Institute from 1975 to 1980. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The sex ratio of total offspring was 51.47% for male and significant at 5% level, and Landrace and Duroc breeds were 51.46% and 52.27% for male and significant at 5% level, respectively, but no significant difference between the breeds. 2. The sex ratio of offspring by years was 52.74% for male and significant at 5% level in 1979, but no significant difference for other years and between years. 3. The sex ratio of offspring by seasons were a little highly 51.65% and 51.25%, for male in spring and autumn, but no significant difference, respectively. 4. The sex ratio of offspring by parities were 52.65% and 55.81% for male in groups of the 3rd to 4th and the 5th to 6th parity, and significant difference at 5% and 1% level, respectively. 5. The sex ratio of offspring by groups of litter size was 52.65% for male in 1 to 6 heads group, and significant difference at 5% level, but no significant difference between groups of litter size.

  • The prediction of stress intensity factor(SIF) is one of the most important factors to analyse the propagation behavior of cracks in hull structural members. Up to now, however, simplified prediction method of SIF has not yet been established for the cracks experienced in large complex structures. As a first step to predict crack propagation behavior in a ship structure with very large structural redundancies, simplified SIF prediction formulas for various crack shapes were derived based on the results of the stress analysis under a non-crack condition in this study. The adequacy of the proposed method was then verified in comparison with other experimental and analysis results.

  • Palmoplantar pustulosis may be associated with peculiar bone and joint conditions. Initially restricted to the anterior chest wall, these conditions were later found to involve peripheral bones and joints. The same aseptic pseudoinfectious bone and joint lesions were also found associated with severe acne. In 1987, Kahn et al suggested this acronym to describe a number of reports of peculiar bone, joint, and skin lesions published over the last 25 years. SAPHO sydrome stands for synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis syndrome. We report one case of SAPHO syndrome: A 27-year-old female presented left clavicular and right sacroiliac joint pain with hyperostosis and pustulosis palmaris.

  • Mollaret meningitis is a rare syndrome first described by Mollaret in 1944, which is reccurent aseptic meningitis with characteristic clinical and spinal fluid cytologic findings. No etiology has been established. Several authors suggested the association with herpes virus infection, some found intracranial epidermoid tumor eventually in patients diagnosed of Mollaret meningitis. We experienced a case of 14-year old male who had 3 episodes of recurrent aseptic meningitis during four years. The patients initially presented with clinical and laboratory feature of bacterial meningitis, however, extensive serological investigation and cerebrospinal fluid analysis failed to reveal a specific cause. Immune system studies were unremarkable. Cranial computed tomography performed during the attack and magnetic resonance imaging when the patient was asymptomatic were both normal. A tentative diagnosis of Mollaret meningitis was established at the 3rd episode. We report this case with a review of related literatures.

Mass Production of Acanthopanax pedunculus through embryogenic cell culture and of madicinal row materials through bioreactor culture (참오갈피(Acanthopanax pedunculus)의 배형성 세포배양을 통한 식물체 대량번식 및 bio-reactor를 통한 약용원료 생산)

  • 참오갈피(Acanthopanax pedunculus)는 국내 고유한 자생 종이며 현재 몇 그루 만이 존재하는 것으로 추정된다. 이 수종은 대체적으로 다른 오갈피 수종에 비해 잎 및 열매는 물론 식물 전체 부위가 다소 커서 경제성이 높다고 판단된다. 본 실험에서는 참오갈피의 세포배양 기술을 이용한 묘목 및 약용원료의 산업적 대량 생산 기술을 개발하고자 수행 하였다. 참오갈피 접합자배를 적출하여 무균적으로 배양한 다음 자엽단계로 성숙한 이들 접합자배를 1 mg/1 2,4-D가 첨가된 MS 배지에 배양하여 배형성 캘러스를 유도하였다. 배형성 세포의 유도율은 약 72%에 달했다. 유도된 배형성 캘러스는 2,4-D가 첨가된 같은 고체 및 액체 배지에서 계대배양하여 배형성 캘러스 및 세포를 유지하였다. 배형성 캘러스를 2,4-D가 첨가되지 않은 배지에 옮겨주면 이들 세포로부터 체세포배가 발생되었다. 약 2개월의 기간을 거쳐 자엽단계로 성숙된 체세포 배는 발아되지 않기 때문에 5 mg/1 GA$_3$가 첨가된 1/2 MS 배지에 옮겨 발아 및 식물체로 재생 시켰다. 약 7 cm 크기로 재생된 식물체를 인공토양에 옮겨 1달간 순화시키고 난 후 토양에 옮겼을 경우 87%가 생존하였다. 기내에서 유도된 참오갈피 식물체는 특별한 처리를 하여주지 않아도 뿌리로부터 배발생 세포를 형성 할 수 있었다. 따라서 이들 식물체로부터 배발생세포 유도는 세포주의 보존 및 증식에 효과적으로 이용될 수 있었다. 한편 참오갈피 세포는 5-10 리터 바이오리엑터 배양을 통하여 배형성세포, 자엽단계의 배, 유식물의 대량생산의 가능성을 확인하였다.

Detection of flavonoid compounds by cell culture of Ginkgo biloba L (은행(Ginkgo biloba L.)의 세포배양에 의한 Flavonoid류의 검출)

  • Calli induced from Ginkgo bilha L. were cultured to investigate optimal culture conditions and identify the possibility production of useful compounds. Calli were obtained from leaves and stems of Ginkgo biloba seedlings and embryos on WP medium supplemented with 2mg/$\ell$ NAA and 5mg/$\ell$ kinetin. Chlorophyll-ricked green callus was inducted in MS liquid medium containing 1mg/$\ell$ NAA and 0.1mg/$\ell$ kinetin under light as 3 clones selected with origin. Embryo derived callus showed the highest growth rate. Analysis for flavonoids and their precursor was performed by TLC and EMS. A specific precursor of flavonoid was identified in callus, not in natural leaves. These findings indicate that tissue culture may produce rlavonoids.

Preparation and Biocompatibility of Composite Bone Scaffolds Using Gnotobiotic Pig Bones (무균돼지뼈를 이용한 복합 골지지체의 제조와 생체적합성 평가)

  • Highly porous composite bioceramic bone scaffolds were developed using sintered gnotobiotic pig bones. These scaffolds consisted of poly-D,L-lactic acid (P(D,L)LA) and bioceramic materials of pig bone powder. The bone scaffolds were able to promote biocompatibility and possess interconnected pores that would support cell adhesion and proliferation adequately. The composite scaffolds were tested with dental pulp stem cells for cytotoxicity test. Cells seeded on the composite scaffolds were readily attached, well proliferated, as confirmed by cytotoxicity test, and cell adhesion assessment. The composite bone scaffold had no toxicity in cytotoxicity test on the extract of 0.013 g scaffold to 2 ml culture medium. The cells on the composite bone scaffold proliferated better than cells on the P(D,L)LA scaffolds.

  • A 12-years-old Maltese (castrated male) dog with jaundice and purulent discharge from the shoulder was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. A physical and laboratory examination revealed that the mucosa of the conjunctiva and the sclera were icteric, and the liver functional enzyme level and the total bilirubin level were increased. Duodenal caudal deviation caused by suspected masses in diameter of about 2 cm was shown by radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations. Using fine needle aspiration (FNA) and computed tomography (CT), the dog was diagnosed with alimentary lymphoma. The dog was treated with chemotherapy. Hematuria was discovered and dysuria occurred because of sterile hemorrhagic cystitis, which is a unique complication resulting from the use of cyclophosphamide.

  • Mode of action study of irradiation was performed with potato tuber slices, $1mm{\times}1.5cm,$ aged on moist filter paper under aseptic technique. The time courses of invertase activity, nucleic acids and respiratory activity were determined, and sensitivities of these three processes to ionizing radiation were measured. None of those processes was severely inhibited by the dosage suppressing cell division. The result of $^3H-thymidine$ incorporation suggests that the reaction site of ionizing radiation might be existent during mitosis or $G_2$ period.
