  • This pot experiment was conducted to find out the forage productivity and contents of mineral nutrients in an orchardgrass sward as affected by the compost lime, and phosphorus applications on the newly reclaimed and arable pasture soils. This 1st part was concerned with the effect of compost application. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were considerable differences between the newly reclaimed and arable pasture soils in the soil chemical properties as fellows(newly reclaimed soil ↔ arable pasture soil): poor ↔common in pH and contents of Ca and Mg; Poor ↔ good in content of available P$_2$O$_{5}$, base saturation, and mutual balance of Ca : Mg : K; common ↔ good in K content; good ↔ good in absorption coefficient of P$_2$O$_{5}$; poor ↔ somewhat poor in CEC. The contents of available P$_2$O$_{5}$ in both soils after experiment were relatively higher in the compost block than non-compost block. It was recognized that the compost application was resulted in the CEC increase in the newly reclaimed soil. 2. The vigour at early growth of orchardgrass was better in the arable pasture soil then newly reclaimed soil. In the newly reclaimed soil, the vigour at early growth of orchardgrass was remarkedly enhanced by compost application. 3. Under the non-compost application, the orchardgrass yield was higher in the arable pasture soil by 50.9% than newly reclaimed soil. Compared with the non-compost application, the orchardgrass yields were increased in the newly reclaimed soil by 17.1% and the arable pasture soil by 7.6% by the compost application. 4. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, and P in orchardgrass were relatively higher in the arable pasture soil than the newly reclaimed soil, whereas there was no difference in the K concentration. It was recognized that the concentrations of Mg and P in orchardgrass were higher in the compost block than the non-compost block.block.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of cutting frequency and level of fertilizer application on the botanical composition and forage yield of alpine pasture. Field experiment was established at 600 m (a.s.1) altitude with two cutting frequency schedules (two and three times annually) and two levels of fertilizer application (lower level of fertilizer, 200-200-200 kg / ha and standard level of fertilizer, 280-200-240 kg / ha; N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$, respectively). Higher grass to clover ratio was observed in two cutting frequencies. The clover ratio was highest as $16\%$ in thee cutting frequencies with lower level of fertilizer application End the ratio of weed was low in all treatments ($3.7 {\~} 6.7\%$). No significant difference was observed in forage dry matter (DM) yield among treatments, however forage DM yield in three cutting frequencies tended to be greater in standard level of fertilizer application compared to lower level of fertilizer application. The forage quality was greater in three cutting frequencies, but not changed with different levels of fertilizer application. This result indicates that three cutting frequency and standard level of fertilizer application system are considered to be proper management methods at alpine grassland of 600 m altitude considering the botanical composition, forage DM yield md forage quality.

  • To find out the optimum split application ratios of fertilizer nitrogen and potassium in the newly opened pasture at spring, a field experiment was conducted. Two levels of nitrogen and potassium application and three split application ratios of both fertilizer were treated by split design with 4 replications. The experiment was carried out from March, 1984 to October, 1985 on the experimental field of the Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1. Total DM yield was not showed signigicant difference among split application ratios of nitrogen and potassium. 2. DM yield of grasses was 4,854 kg/ha in heavy basal application of N and $K_2$O (160 kgN: 140 kg $K_2$O/ha), it was significantly increased by 16% than of conventional dressing (80 kg N: 70 kg $K_2$O/ha). But there was almost no difference in dry matter among N and $K_2$O split application ratios. 3. Dry matter yield of legume in heavy basal dressing was decreased by 23% than that of conventional dressing. In the methods of NK application, dry matter yield of legume was tended to decrease by 3% with equal application and 9% with heavy dressing in autumn, when compared with that of heavy dressing in spring. 4. There was no significant difference in dry matter yield of native species between different basic fertilization levels, but dry matter yield of native species was decreased by 6% with equal application and more increased by 11% with heavy dressing in autumn, when compared with the yield of heavy dressing in spring. 5. In aspect of the botanical composition, the percentage distribution of grasses was increased and the ratio of legume was greatly decreased by heavy dressing at basal fertilization. Also for good maintenance of botanical composition, it is suggested that the equal split application of N and $K_2$O was desirable.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tall type mixtures and turf type mixtures on dry matter yield, botanical composition and quality. The experimental design includes two mixture types : Tall type mixtures; orchardgrass (Potomac) 50+tall fescue (Fawn) 20+ Kentucky bluegrass (Kenblue) 10+red clover (Kenland) 20%) and turf type mixtures; Kentucky bluegrass(Newport) 60%+tall fescue (reboil Jr.) 20+perennial ryegrass (palmer II) 20%. The DM yield was higher obtained in tall type mixture than that of turf type mixture (p<0.05). In the chemical composition, Turf type mixture was higher in crude protein (CP) and dry matter digestibility (DMD), but lower in fibrous compound as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin than those of tall type mixture (p<0.05). The crude protein dry matter (CPDM) and digestible dry matter (DDM) yield was higher in tall type mixture than turf type mixture (p<0.05). In this experiment, nutritive value of turf type mixture was higher than that of tall type mixture, but CPDM and DDM yield of turf type mixture were lower than that of turf type mixture due to low dry matter yield. On the other hand, turf type mixture was obtained high feed value, and maintaining the various botanical composition on the 13 th cutting frequency condition. therefore, turf type mixture had a utilization possibility under grazing livestock as sheep and milk goats.

  • The experiments were carried out to study the influence of meteorological factors and cutting management on dry matter accumulation and net energy value in orchardgrass (Dactlylis glomerata L.) cv. Potomac and Baraula, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cv. Reveille and Semperweide and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) cv. Cosmos 11 and N.F.G.. The field trials were designed as a split plot design with three cutting regimes of 6-7 cuts at grazing stage, 4-5 cuts at silage stage and 3 cuts at hat stage in Korea and West Germany from 1975 to 1979. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Productivity of orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue were mainly affected by cutting systems and meteorological factors, especially air temperature, rainfalls, solar radiation and their interactions. In West Germany, cutting frequency was to be found asan most important factor influenced to dry matter yield and net energy value. 2. Orchardgrass, taken as average of all experimental sites in Korea, produced high yield of 875 kg/10 a in dry matter, which was as much as 32% and 27% higher than those of perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue, respectively. The annual dry matter yields of orchardgrass from 1976 to 1977 were shown a little variation. Dry matter yields in Freising and Braunschweig in West Germany were increased in all grass species continuously. 3. Orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue showed different response to cutting frequency. The highest dry matter yields were found under 3 cuts at hay stage for orchardgrass and 4-5 cuts at silage stage for perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue. In West Germany, dry matter yields, as average of all grass species under different cutting systems, were 1326 kg, 1175 kg and 1098 kg/10a for 3 cuts, 4-5 cuts and 6-7 cuts, respectively. 4. Chemical composition and net energy concentration of temperate grasses were influenced by cutting managements. The highest yields of digestible crude protein were obtained under 6-7 cuts at grazing stage both in Korea and West Germany. In net energy yields, 3 cutting system produced the highest yield with 694 (orchardgrass), 665 (perennial ryegrass) an 623 kStE/10 a (meadow fescue). However, frequent cutting at grazing and silage stage produced higher yields than 3 cuts at hay stage in Cheju, Suweon and Taekwalyong.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of legume reseeding on legume establishment, dry matter yield, quality and botanical composition of grasses in timothy(Ph1eum prarense L.) dominated pasture at alpine area. Establishment number and percentage of legume in timothy dominated pasture were increased with spring, red clover(Tr$olium pratense L.) and gramoxone $treatment Dry matter yield of pasture was increased with fall and grazing after overseeding, but, there waq no difference in legume species. Crude protein content(%) of grasses at the first cutting was increased with red clover and paraquat (gramoxone) treatment. Based on the results, it is suggested that spring in seeding time, red clover in legume species and oveneeding after gramoxone treatment are good for effective renovation of timothy dominated pasture at alpine area.

  • Field experiment was conducted from 1991 to 1993 at $Allg\ddot{a}u$ south western Germany to determine the effects of cutting frequencies on the yield and growth responses in intensively used grassland. Cutting frequency, 3 cutting(reduced) and 6 cutting(conventional) were tested. The yield, protein content, in vitro digestible dry matter and net energy value were markedly reduced with 3 cutting. Distribution ratio of grasses and legumes was not different between 3 and 6 cutting frequencies. However, the distribution of Dactylis glomerta at 3 cutting frequency was increased and that of Lolium perenne decreased. Nitrogen uptake by the plants at 6 cutting frequency was higher, 443kg/ha, than 308kg/ha of 3 cutting frequency.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of boron application($B_{0}$ ; control, $B_1$; 0.2, $B_2$; 2.0, B$_3$; 6.0, $B_4$; 15.0 boron me/pot) on the forage performance of pure and mixed cultures of orchardgrass and white clover. The third part was concerned with the changes in the contents and yields of nitrogen compounds(crude/pure protein and soluble N-compound) in forages. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. With no additional fertilization, especially nitrogen, in a pure culture, the $B_{0}$ and $B_4$ treatments on white clover decreased the amount of crude/pure protein, and showed nitrogen deficiency symptoms. However, the optimum boron application($B_2$) positively resulted in the increase of crude and pure protein, especially pure protein, and the content ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds. With additional fertilization, especially nitrogen, differences were not found among the boron treatments($B_{0}$, $B_2$, and $B_4$). 2. Owing to the decline of white clover as affected by the additional fertilization, especially nitrogen, in the grass-clover mixed cultures, the effects of B-application on these contents of white clover were different and relatively low, compared with the pure cultures. But the positive effect of $B_2$ treatment tended to be similar to the pure cultures. Also, it was recognized that the $B_2$ treatment resulted in the increase of their contents in orchardgrass, however, the effect was relatively minor compared with that of white clover. 3. The optimum B application(B$_2$) on white clover influenced relatively better on the yields of crude and pure protein than on the dry matter yields, especially with no additional fertilization. The effects of boron application on the contents and yields of crude and pure protein were different according to the forage species, whether it was a pure or mixed culture, and additional fertilization.
