For the safe seismic design of buildings, it is necessary to predict the plastic deformation demands of the members as well as the story drift ratio. In the present study, a simple method of estimating the beam plastic rotation was developed for special-moment-resisting steel frame structures designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The proposed method uses elastic analysis rather than nonlinear analysis, which is difficult to use in practice. The beam plastic rotation was directly calculated based on the results of the elastic analysis, addressing the moment redistribution, the column and joint dimensions, the movement of the plastic hinge, the panel zone deformation, the gravity load, and the strain-hardening behavior. In addition, the rocking effect of the braced frame or core wall on the beam plastic rotation was addressed. For verification, the proposed method was applied to a six-story special-moment frame designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The predicted plastic rotations of the beams were compared with those that were determined via nonlinear analysis. The beam plastic rotations that were predicted using the proposed method correlated well with those that were determined from the nonlinear pushover analysis.

To secure the structural safety of structures and members against earthquakes, the plastic deformation capacity demand of members should be accurately predicted. In the present study, a method for the evaluation of the plastic deformations of members for moment frames was developed. To facilitate the practical use of the proposed method in equivalent seismic design, the plastic deformations of members were evaluated based on the results of elastic analysis, without using nonlinear analysis. The plastic deformation demands of members were formulated as functions of story drift demand, redistributed moment and member stiffness. Story drift demand and moment redistribution were directly determined from elastic analysis. The proposed method was applied to an 8 story-2 bay moment frame, and the predicted plastic deformations were verified using nonlinear analysis. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to accurately predict the member plastic rotations with simple calculations. The proposed method can be applied both to the earthquake design of new structures and to the performance evaluation of existing structures.
Current design provisions and guide for performance-based design do not accurately evaluate seismic performance of flat plate system. In the previous companion studies, parametric studies using nonlinear finite element analyses were performed to investigate behavior of the flat plate, and based on the numerical results, design methods that can predict the bending moment-carrying capacity and the corresponding deformability of the flat plate was developed. In the present study, a generalized moment-rotation relation of the flat plate was developed based on the previous studies and the numerical analyses. The proposed method was verified by the comparisons with existing experiments. In addition, the effective stiffness of the flat plate corresponding to 0.2 percent of lateral drift that is generally regarded as the serviceability limit was proposed, so as to evaluate conveniently deflection of the structure subject to wind load.

Upon installing a seismic isolation device on a nuclear power plant, the device takes on the suppression of seismic loads. This is expected to bring about a larger displacement than what is seen prior to the installation of the seismic isolation device. Depending on the displacement change, the seismic risk for some equipment can increase. Particularly in case of the piping system, which is used for connecting the structure isolated from seismic events with common structures, the seismic risk is expected to rise significantly. In this study, the limit state of the steel pipe tee, which is a vulnerability part of the nuclear power plant piping system, was defined as leakage, and an in-plane cyclic loading test was conducted. As it is difficult to measure the moment and rotation of the steel pipe tee using the conventional sensors, an image signal was used. This study proposed a leakage line and low-cycle fatigue curves using the relationship between the moment and the rotation of a 3-inch steel pipe tee.

To conduct probabilistic seismic fragility analysis for nuclear power plants, it is very important to define the failure modes and criteria that can represent actual serious accidents. The seismic design criteria for piping systems, however, cannot fully reflect serious accidents because they are based on plastic collapse and cannot express leakage, which is the actual limit state. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly define the limit state for reliable probabilistic seismic fragility analysis. Therefore, in this study, the limit state of the SCH80 3-inch steel pipe elbow, the vulnerable part of piping systems, was defined as leakage, and the in-plane cyclic loading test was conducted. Moreover, an attempt was made to quantify the failure criteria for the steel pipe elbow using the damage index, which was based on the dissipated energy that used the moment-deformation angle relationship.

In this paper, a practical method of estimating the flap hinge moments which change according to the aircraft flap operations was introduced. For the flap design, the hinge moment derived by structural load analysis and wind tunnel tests was able to be compared with the real flight hinge moment, and the static safety of the flap structure could be verified though this comparison. In order to perform the tests, two strain gauges were installed on the flap hinge and an onboard device for aircraft load monitoring was utilized. Through the ground test, the correlation between the strain and the moment of the flap hinge was calibrated with analytic and finite element analysis. During the flight test, strain signals together with the flap deflection angles and airspeed were recorded. Finally, the flight hinge moments could be predicted by the measured strain which was calibrated with the analytic and the finite element analysis.
For the prediction of shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams, this paper proposed Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) considered bending moment effect. Shear stress-strain relationship obtained from the TATM was agreed well with test results conducted by this study Further, shear strength obtained from the TATM was compared to the experimentally observed results of 170 reinforced concrete beams which had various shear span ratios shapes of support and shapes of cross section. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams obtained from test was better predicted by the TATM with 0.96 in average and 11.9% in coefficient of variation than by other truss models. And the ratio of experimental results to theoretical results obtained from the TATM was almost constant regardless of the η and a/d.
This study was programmed to fabricate a beam-to-column connection that is limited to a steel-welded moment connection with full-scale members, using SN steel. A cyclic seismic test was conducted of the nine specimens that were fabricated by choosing the test variable for the weld access hole geometry, connection design method, and RBS. From the test results, failure modes, the moment-drift behavior, and the strain distribution were provided. From the specimen material properties, the beam's nominal plastic flexural capacity and classified qualified connection as a special moment flame were calculated. By analyzing the skeleton part and the baushinger part, a range of strength-raising effects, and deformation ratios were provided, with which the seismic performance of the specimens were evaluated. The test results showed that the specimens eliminated their weld access holes that demonstrated higher seismic performance than the specimens' existing weld access holes, and that the WUF-W connection that was reinforced by the supplemental fillet weld around the shear tap that was fastened by five bolts demonstrated superior seismic performance.

For safe and economical design to provide strong earthquake resistance, the moment redistribution and plastic rotation of structures and their members needs to be evaluated. To achieve this, an earthquake design method was developed using secant stiffness analysis. To address the variation of member stiffness due to plastic rotation and moment redistribution, a structure was modeled with a beam-column element with non-rigid end connections (NREC element). Secant stiffness for the NREC element was determined based on the ductility demands of the structure and members. By performing a conventional linear analysis for the secant stiffness model, redistributed moments and plastic rotations of the members were computed. The proposed method was applied to a moment frame and two dual systems. The design results were verified using detailed nonlinear analyses.
