An experimental study was conducted to investigate seismic behaviour of post-tensioned(PT) exterior slab-column connections used for the purpose to resist gravity loads only. For these, 2/3-scale, two PT post-tensioned exterior connections with two different tendon arrangement patterns and one conventional reinforced concrete(RC) exterior connection was tested under quasi-static, uni-directional reversed cyclic loading. During the lateral testing, gravity forces transferred to the column were kept constant to closely simulate a moment to shear ratio of a real building. One of the objectives of this study was to assess the necessity and/or the quantity of bottom bonded reinforcement needed to resist moment reversal which would occur under significant inelastic deformations of the adjacent lateral force resisting systems. The ACI 318 and 352 provisions for structural integrity were applied to provide the bottom reinforcement passing through the column for the specimens. Prior test results were also collected to conduct comparative studies for some design parameters such as the tendon arrangement pattern, the effect of post-tensioning forces and the use of bottom bonded reinforcement. Consequently, the impact of tendon arrangement on the seismic performance of the PT connection, that is lateral drift capacity and ductility, dissipated energy and failure mechanism, was considerable. Moreover, test results showed that the amount of bottom reinforcement specified by ACI 352. 1R-89 was sufficient for resisting positive moments arising from moment reversal under reversed cyclic loads. Shear strength of the tested specimens was more accurately predicted by the shear strength equation(ACI 318) considering the average compressive stress over the concrete($f_{pc}$) due to post-tensioning forces than that without considering $f_{pc}$.

In spite of 6.8 magnitude and the neighborhood of the epicenter, the steel moment frame survived after Northridge earthquake without collapse or casualties. However, following investigation revealed that there were severe damages at the column-weld interface of welded flange-bolted web (WFBW) steel moment connection, which was believed to be economic and safe from earthquakes based on experience and past tests. In this paper, this unexpected brittle fracture of the steel moment connection is explored using linear elastic fracture mechanics and post-Northridge tests. A method to predict the brittle fracture strength of the steel moment connection is proposed. Using this method, the failure mode of the WFBW connection and reduced beam section (RBS) connection are presented.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new connection method between steel beams and PC columns known as SL connectors. Composite moment frames consisting of PC columns (or composite columns) and steel beams make the best use of advantages of both concrete and steel materials. However, the connection between two members of different materials can be complex and/or increase the fabrication costs significantly. The concept of SL connectors is based on using wedges and the emphasis is on a self-locking (SL) feature. SL connectors are easy to install and provide better seismic performance compared to conventional connections. To evaluate the seismic performance of the steel beam-to-PC column joints with SL connectors, cyclic load tests were conducted. Test result showed that steel beam-to-concrete column joint with SL connectors was able to provide sufficient performance for use in seismic resistant moment frames.

In recent years, the needs for double deck-tunnels have increased in large cities due to the increase in traffic volume and high land compensation costs. In Korea, a network type tunnel which is smaller than general road tunnels and crosses another tunnel underground is planned. In the shield tunnel joints between the existing shield tunnel and the box-type enlargement section, a partial steel-concrete joint is proposed where the bending moment is large instead of the existing full-section steel joint. In order to analysis the enlargement section of the shield tunnel diverged section to reflect the three-dimensional effect, the two-dimensional analysis model is considered to consider the column effect and the stiffness effect of the longitudinal member. A two-dimensional analysis method is proposed to reflect the stiffness of the longitudinal member and the column effect of the longitudinal point by considering the rigidity of the longitudinal member as the elastic spring point of the connecting part in the lateral model. As a result of the analysis of the model using the longitudinal member, it was considered that the structural safety of the partial steel-concrete joint can be secured by reducing the bending moment of the joint and the box member by introducing the longitudinal member having the stiffness equal to or greater than a certain value.
The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with non-seismic detailing. To do this, an exterior beam-column subassemblage was selected from a ten story RC building and six 1/3-scale specimens were manufactured with three variables; (1) with and without slab, (2) upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams, and (3) with and without hoop bars in the joint region. The test results have shown that (1) the existence of slab increased the strength in positive and negative moment, 25% and 52%, respectively; (2) the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) caused the 8% reduction of strength and the early strength degradation in comparison with the case of seismic details; and (3) the existence of hoop bars in the joint region shows significant role in preventing the pull-out.t.

The study proposes the method to cancel the scallop to avoid fracture of the circumstance of the scallop at H shape column-to-beam connection and reinforce at beam flange two faces with the cover plates and rib. A total of four specimens were tested to enhance seismic performance of building structure by reducing the frequency of stress concentration and preventing the brittle fracture of scallop. For this purpose, four full-scale test specimens were made and loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. The main analytical parameters are panel-zone-strength ratio, yield strengths, initial stiffness, total plastic rotation, contribution of each element to total plastic rotation and energy dissipation capability. For the specimens tested under repeated loading, the experimental result was satisfied with seismic performance requirement as the Special Moment Frames (SMF). The analysis results show that all of the test specimens were found to have good performance to 4% story drift and satisfied the criteria for the plastic roation capacity of SMFs that is 0.03 rad. according to the 1997 AISC seismic provision.

Recently a simplified design procedure as well as load transfer model for seismic steel moment connections with welded straight haunch have been proposed by Lee and Uang. Cyclic seismic testing was conducted to verify the proposed design procedure and to develop the details that will prevent the cracking at the haunch tip, where stress concentration was the highest. All the specimens thus designed effectively pushed plastic hinging away from the haunch tip and were able to develop satisfactory plastic rotation capacity of 0.04 radian with no fracture. A sloped edge combined with drilling a hole near the haunch tip or a pair of stiffeners(partially or fully) extended from the beam web successfully prevented the crack initiation at the haunch tip. The strut action of the haunch web, which had been predicted from the previous analytical study, was also experimentally identified through the strain gage readings.
The connections are classified as rigid, semi+rigid, or pinned. There are two classification systems, EC3 adn Bjorhovede et al., representatively. The EC3 boundary between rigid and semi-rigid connections is in on the whole restrictive in term of the stiffness as well as the moment capacity of connections. The boundary specified by Bjorhovede et al. may not be sufficient to assure the behavior of rigid frames in some cases. In this study, it is proposed the new classification system for steel connection that depends on the reduction factor(R) of critical buckling load for unbraced semi-rigid frame expressed by the stiffness ratio($\rho$) of beam to column and the stiffness ratio(k) of connection to beam. Finally, it is examined by experimental data that new classification criteria provides a practical boundary compared wit hteh existing classifications.

The paper presented the seismic performance of T-stiffener moment connections for use in steel moment-resisting frames. The connections were strengthened by welding the vertical and horizontal clement of the T-stiffener to the beam flange and column f1ange. Finite clement analysis and experiments were conducted to determine the behavior of T-stiffener-reinforced connections. The results of the finite element analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the T-stiffener, whose horizontal element lengthened to mitigate local stress concentrations of the beam flange on the horizontal stiffener. Full-scale specimens were also tested cyclically to study hysteresis behavior. The main parameters used were the ratio of the T-stiffener to beam strength and the shape of the horizontal element. As the length of the horizontal element increased, the deformation capacity of the connections enhanced. Likewise, all specimens behaved according to the Ramberg-Osgood curve and showed stable hysteresis behavior.
