  • In the design of civil engineering structures, the designers are invariably faced to the uncertainties and the randomness of the design parameters such as material properties and loads. Even when the structures are built, the actual geometries of the structures are also subject to their random variations from their nominal design values. Thus, the reliability of a structure in terms of these uncertainties and variations becomes a matter of great concern to the structural designers. This study employs the First Order Second Moment Method to evluate numerically the reliability of a simple tension member and discusses the influence on the final failure probability of that structure due to: 1) use of equivalent normal distribution in place of non-normal distribution, 2) linearization of non linear limit state equation. A discussion is also made on the necessity of fundamental studies on the distrubution characteristics of the strength of locally produced construction materials and those of the loads frequently encountered in the structural design.

  • Cyclic loading tests for beam-to-column weak-axis connections were performed to investigate the seismic performance. In this study, the connections were developed to improve the constructability on the basis of investigation for existing small-size steel structures. The primary test parameter is the number of high-tension bolts which are used to connect steel beam and column using exterior and interior flange plates. Test results showed that the number of bolts had a significant effect on the cyclic behavior of beam-column weak-axis connections. From the analysis of test results, it is concluded that more than four bolts in the connections can satisfy the requirements of semi-rigid connection presented in current design codes. All of specimens showed the bearing failure around bolt holes and fracture at the beam flange. However, when the web height and the flange width is relatively small, the number of the bolts used in the connections might be limited. Thus, the additional research in this area is needed.

  • This paper presents the study of the bending behavior of mooring chain links for keeping the position of the offshore floating structures. In general, chain links have been thought as the axial members due to the fundamental boundary condition. But, the flexural stiffness can be induced to the contact surface between chain links when friction occurs at the surface of the chain links due to high tensile force. Especially, the mooring chains for offshore floating platforms are highly tensioned. If the floater suffers rotational motion and the mooring chain links are highly tensioned, the rotation between contact links, induced by the floater rotation, generates the bending moment and relevant stresses due to the unexpected bending stiffness. In 2005, the mooring chain links for the Girassol Buoy Platform were failed after just 5 months after facility installation, and the accident investigation research concluded the chain failure was mainly caused by the fatigue due to the unexpected bending stress fluctuation. This study investigates the pattern of the induced bending stiffness and stresses of the highly tensioned chain links by nonlinear finite element analysis.

  • In order to verify the lift enhancement of the 2D hydrofoil with trailing edge rotor and check the ability of its practical use, experimental studies were conducted in the caviation tunnel using the test model with NACA0020 section. The three-component forces acting on the model could be measured by exclusively designed sting type multi-component load cell. The trailing edge of the model has been replaced with rotor which could be controlled by DC servo motor installed at the exterior of the tunnel. A typical effect of the trailing edge rotor has been introduced among the systematic experiments on various angular deviation of the model and the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor. It is appeared that the circulation control effect could be easily adjusted by selecting the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor and the lift force was augmented more than two times. Thus the proposed lifting device could be utilized as a novel high lifting device which has adjustability of lift force.

  • In highly elevated piers and long span beams, a hollow section is often used to reduce the self-weight and increase the flexural rigidity of members. Numerical analysis was conducted to obtain the moment-curvature curves and curvature ductility factor for the RC hollow section beams under a range of hollow portion sizes and reinforcement conditions in the upper flange and web. The curvature ductility factor was constantly maintained until the hollow portion size($b_i/b_o/h_i/h_o$) was less than or equal to 0.5. The curvature ductility factor decreased sharply if ($b_i/b_o/h_i/h_o$) was 0.7 or more. The curvature ductility factor of the beam decreased if reinforcement was provided in the web of the RC hollow section beam. To obtain the same level of the ductility factor as the singly reinforced section, the reinforcement should be provided in the upper flange as much as the web reinforcement.

  • This study suggests mixing steel fibers in concrete to secure the toughness of the columns. Therefore, to evaluate the structural behavior of welded built-up square columns filled with steel fiber reinforced concrete, ten stub column specimens were fabricated for compressive loading test with variables of steel fiber mixing ratio and loading condition. It is deduced that the steel fibers continue to provide tensile strength even after the concrete cracks and thus improve the strength and behavior of the column when bending moment is applied to it. A small amount of steel fibers can improve compressive strength and bending strength and thus produce economically efficient results when employed in structural design.

  • This study is about design and verification of stress reduction of bearings for wind turbines. In a slewing bearing having a typical four-contact structure, the contact point moves to the end of the raceway due to a large moment load, resulting in a stress concentration. A bearing was designed to reduce such contact point movement. The deformation behavior of typical ball bearings and newly designed bearings was calculated through finite element analysis under ultimate load by replacing the ball with a spring element. The contact stress between the ball and the raceway was calculated by finite element analysis by inputting the deformation behavior analysis result as a boundary condition. The effectiveness of the bearing stress analysis method using spring elements was verified through comparison of the contact stress according to the bearing structure.

  • This paper presents the numerical calculation for input impedance of a conductor located in the loss media by using the program with MATLAB. The input impedances of the conductor were numerically calculated with the moment of method. To increase an accuracy of results, the Galerkin's method which both the basic function and the weight function are the triangle function was applied. And by applying the modified image method, image sources of the conductor located in air were considered. According to the comparison between the current distributions at the conductor which were calculated with the MATLAB program and the NEC program, the reliability of the self-made program with MATLAB was obtained. In case of the conductor located in soil, which length are 1 m and 2 m, the input impedance were simulated as a function of both a conductivity and a frequency. Finally, input impedances and phases of the conductor located in soil were measured, and those results were compared with simulated results which calculated under the same conditions.

  • In this study, the displacement-based design concept, the performance by the existing reinforced concerte column and steel reinforced concrete composite column for SRC purchased the maximum design ground acceleration improvement compared to the performance design. SRC have several advantages such as strength enhancement and high ductility. H-beam or steel tubes were used for embedded elements of the SRC composite columns. SRC cross-section for the P-M diagram and analysis on the nominal bending monent SRC designed for composite columns for disparity estimation is presented to the displacement-based seismic design. Performance improvement of the performance-based design performance targets for the design seismic displacement and design criteria for the direct displacement-based design methods and to improve the seismic performance due to the displacement coefficient method is proposed to design. SRC compared with the RC column designed to improve the performance and displacement ductility ratio displacement results in the performance design results showed significantly improved performance.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the Timoshenko beam supported by two elastomeric bearings at two far ends. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam is derived, in which both effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included as the Timoshenko beam theory. Also, boundary conditions of the free end are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The ordinary differential equation is solved by the numerical methods for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes. Both effects of the rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. Also, relationships between natural frequencies and slenderness ratio, foundation modulus and bearing length are presented. Typical mode shapes of bending moment and shear force as well as deflection are given in figures which show the positions of maximum amplitudes and nodal points.
