  • The modular construction means that more than 70% of the parts such as walls, windows, electrical wiring, facility piping, bathrooms, and kitchen appliances are pre-assembled at the factory and transported to the site. It is possible to shorten the construction period than general construction work and to secure high quality through modular mass production since the modular construction works in the field at the same time as the modular production. However, there are only four domestic modular manufacturers, and each company's modular components and construction methods are different, so it is necessary to standardize them. Therefore, this study investigated the construction process centering on the stacking method of modular housing construction work applied to D site in Cheonan-si, and proposed the key points of quality management by construction stage. As the project was conducted as a pilot project for government R&D projects, some differences may occur from general modular housing construction. However, the construction process and quality control focus of each unit box type modular house analyzed in this study can be used as basic data in the future of modular housing construction. In addition, the results of this study can be used to establish construction standards, such as the development of checklists and establishment of standard processes.

  • In Korea, the modular construction method was applied to the construction of facilities such as military barracks and school dormitories, beginning with the pilot project of Seoul New Elementary School in 2003. In 2017, public modular houses were supplied to Busan(Yongho-dong) and Seoul(Gayang-dong), and modular housing is expected to continue to be supplied in the future. However, there is no clear construction standard for the modular housing construction yet, and there are few cases where the infill modular system is applied. Therefore, this study established the work breakdown structure and proposed a standard process focusing on the infill modular system applied to the construction of Dujeong-dong modular house in Cheonan. Level 1 of the work breakdown structure by construction stage of Infill modular was defined as modular manufacturing, assembly, and finishing process. Level 2 was defined as preparation, modular production, modular infill, modular fixing, floor plastering, building finishing, and other site finishing. Level 3 is defined as 57 detailed unit work of infill modular construction. The standard process of infill modular is proposed for the assembly stage that is commonly applicable to infill modular housing construction. The results of this study can be used for the process plan, transportation plan, lifting plan of modular housing construction.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) and modular construction are regarded as important technologies that have contributed to advancements in the construction industry. However, the utilization of BIM in current modular construction projects is limited; moreover, there are no specific guidelines pertaining the applications of BIM in modular construction projects. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the utilization of BIM for onsite construction planning in modular construction projects. First, a realistic BIM application was selected through literature review and expert interviews. Then, the construction plan of the modular projects was analyzed to classify the BIM application items into five different categories. The utilization of BIM in each category was then analyzed in terms of necessity and efficiency using a questionnaire. Finally, the BIM Utilization Index (BIM UI) was suggested based on the findings of the survey. As a results, the BIM UI for module point details, lifting plan, other installation details, site layout plan, and schedule plan was 0.811, 0.787, 0.770, 0.729, and 0.699, in the descending order of usability. In addition, through the findings of the study and interviews with experts, a case study for implementation of BIM in modular construction plan was conducted. The results of this study can be used as application guidelines for BIM in future modular construction projects.

  • In this study, we develop a simulation model for Supply Chain Management (SCM) of modular construction based steel bridge. To this end, first, Factory Production/Site Construction system data for the steel bridge construction were collected, and supply chain, entities, resources, processes were defined based on the collected data. After that, a steel bridge supply chain simulation model was developed by creating data, flowchart, and animation modules using Arena software. Finally, verification and validation of the model were performed by using animation check, extreme condition check, average value test, Little' s law test, and actual case value test. As a result, the developed simulation model appropriately expressed the processes and characteristics of the steel bridge supply chain without any logical errors, and provided accurate performance evaluation values for the target system. In the future, we expect that the model will faithfully play a role as a performance evaluation platform in developing management techniques for optimally operating the steel bridge supply chain.

  • This study aims to provide a more comfortable environment for the external environment by designing a rotable dwelling that deviates from the conventional fixed residential concept. The round pillars, which are the center of the building, are constructed by placing the CFT (concrete Filled steel Tube) technique in place and assembling modular houses with columns. This study combines existing building techniques. Korea also needs to develop various related studies quickly.

  • Leakage defects account for a significant proportion of defect cases in modular homes. There are factors that can cause leakage defects at each stage, and quality control measures are required to minimize them. An improvement plan to prevent leakage defects was applied from the design drawings to the site of a modular public rental apartment complex in Sejong City 6-3, and a quality control plan was proposed to minimize leakage defects in the remaining process processes.

  • A steel modular unit structural system has been used increasingly for mid and high-rise buildings, since the building can be easily constructed by assembling the pre-made modular unit structures. For this structural system, each modular unit structures have to be properly connected to the foundation to transfer the axial force and the bending moment that are generated from external load to the ground. In this study, a new type of the embedded steel column-to-foundation connection was proposed, and its flexural behavior was evaluated through a series of experimental study. Five full scale specimens for the proposed connections were constructed and tested. The effect of the main parameters that affect the flexural behavior of the proposed connection, such as embedment length and shape of end plate, were studied. From the results, it was found that the flexural stiffness of the proposed connection was higher than that of the semi-rigid connection for all test specimens, and 200 mm of embedment length was proper for the given test specimens in this study.

  • Recently, steel modular systems are developed and have been applied to the projects requiring fast construction such as military barracks and vertical expansion of school buildings. The existing modular system with standard module of ${6m\times3m}$ has a problem that many columns are duplicated in the module connection and the wall thickness increases. In this study, $12m{\times}3m$ module is proposed to solve this problem. Various types of beam-middle column connection which are essential for realizing the $12m{\times}3m$ module are proposed and their maximum load capacity and failure mode are analytically and experimentally evaluated. The comparison between analytical and experimental results shows that the maximum axial load and failure mode can be accurately estimated by finite element analysis. Some connection types which have higher failure load than the design load of the column, can be used as the beam-middle column connection detail of the $12m{\times}3m$ module.

  • Recently, modular structural systems have been applicable to building construction since they can significantly reduce building construction time. They consists of several unit modular frames of which each beam-column joint employs an access hole for connecting unit modular frames. Their structural design is usually carried out under the assumption that their load-carrying mechanism is similar to that of a traditional steel moment-resisting system. In order to obtain the validation of this assumption, the cyclic characteristics of beam-column joints in a unit modular frame should be investigate. This study carried out finite element analyses(FEM) of unit modular frames to investigate the cyclic behavior of beam-column joints with the structural influence of access holes. Analysis results show that the unit modular frames present stable cyclic response with large deformation capacities and their joints are classified into partial moment connections. Also, this study develops a simple spring model for earthquake nonlinear analyses and suggests the Ramberg-Osgood hysteretic rule to capture the cyclic response of unit modular frames.
