In this paper, optimization procedures are presented considering the static and dynamic constraints for laminated composite plate and hybrid laminated composite plate subject to concentrated load on center of the plates. Design variables for this problem are ply angle or ply thickness. Deflection, natural frequency and specific damping capacity are considered as constraints. Using a recursive linear programming method, the nonlinear optimization problems are solved. By introducing the design scaling factor, the number of iterations is reduced significantly. Composite plates could be designed optimally combined with FEM analysis under various conditions. In the optimization procedure, verification for both analysis and design of the laminated composite plates are compared with the results of the others. Various design results are presented for the laminated composite plates and hybrid laminated composite plates.

In this study, the natural frequency and damping ratio of a four-harness satin woven glass/epoxy composite material are evaluated by means of modal tests and a finite element analysis. To achieve this goal, glass/epoxy beam specimens with different lengths and thicknesses were manufactured via autoclave curing. In the test, the maximum damping ratio was found to occur at the lowest test frequency. As the test frequency increased, the damping ratio decreased exponentially to a critical value. After that value, the damping ratio increased gradually to the maximum test frequency.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for 25- and 42-story buildings to evaluate their inherent properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Both are reinforced concrete buildings adopting a core wall, or with shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system, but frames are added in the plan or elevation. In particular, shear walls in a 25-story building are converted to frames from the 4th floor level downwards while maintaining a core wall throughout, resulting in a fairly complex structure. Due to this, along with similar stiffness characteristics in the principal directions, significantly coupled and closely spaced modes of motion are expected in this building, making identification rather difficult. By using various state-of-the-art system identification methods, the modal parameters are extracted, and the results are then compared. Three frequency-domain and four time-domain based operational modal identification methods are considered. Overall, all natural frequencies and damping ratios estimated from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for both buildings, while mode shapes exhibited some degree of discrepancy, varying from method to method. On the other hand, in comparison with analysis results obtained using the initial finite element(FE) models, test results exhibited a significant difference of about doubled frequencies, at least for the three lower modes in both buildings. To improve the correlation between test and analysis, a few manual schemes of FE model updating based on plausible reasons have been applied, and acceptable results are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each identification method used are addressed, and some difficulties that might arise from the updating of FE models, including automatic procedures, for such large structures are carefully discussed.

PSC girder with holed web have several benefits. Most of all placing tendon anchorage in the holes can make prestressing forces be loaded stepwise. In addition it can reduce the self-weight of the beams and increase the span length of beams. And holed web might minimize the interference of view. In this study, a 50-meter long full scale multilevel post-tensioned PSC girder was fabricated and modal test was carried out. In order to obtain precise frequency response, vibration exciter was placed at the middle of the girder and excited with several frequencies. Natural frequency and damping ratio were evaluated from FFT and PSD using the obtained frequency response and compared with numerical analysis result.

Various PSC and steel-concrete composite railway bridges are being developed for short-medium spans with structural and economic efficiency. According to the design concept, the prestressed composite girder bridge has the advantages of being lightweight and having low girder depth, with the capacity for long spans. However, the dynamic behavior under a passing train is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the modal parameters before performing dynamic analyses. In this paper, real-scale prestressed composite girders were fabricated as a test model and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequency and modal damping ratio. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer was applied to obtain frequency-response functions, and the modal parameters were also evaluated after the fracture of test models. With application of reliable properties from modal tests, the estimation of dynamic performances of prestressed composite girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of a moving train.

As an alternative to conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, various types of PSC girders are either under development or have already been applied in bridge structures. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to the design concept, these new types of PSC girders have the advantages of requiring less self-weight while having the capability of longer spans. However, the dynamic interaction between bridge superstructures and passing trains is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate modal parameters of newly designed bridges before doing dynamic analyses. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale PSC girder was fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios at every prestressing stage. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied, in order to obtain precise frequency response functions and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with construction stages. Prestressed force effects on changes of modal parameters are analyzed at every incremental prestressing stage. With the application of reliable properties from modal experiments, estimation of dynamic performances of PSC girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of moving train. Dynamic displacements, impact factor, acceleration of the slab, end rotation of the girder, and other important dynamic performance parameters are checked with various speeds of the train.
In this paper, two methods to suppress flutter of the composite panel are examined. First, in the active control method, a controller based on the linear optimal control theory is designed and control input voltage is applied on the actuators and a PZT is used as actuator. Second, a new technique, passive suppression scheme, is suggested for suppression of the nonlinear panel flutter. In the passive suppression scheme, a shunt circuit which consists of inductor-resistor is used to increase damping of the system and as a result the flutter can be attenuated. A passive damping technology, which is believed to be more robust suppression system in practical operation, requires very little or no electrical power and additional apparatuses such as sensor system and controller are not needed. To achieve the great actuating force/damping effect, the optimal shape and location of the actuators are determined by using genetic algorithms. The governing equations are derived by using extended Hamilton's principle. They are based on the nonlinear von Karman strain-displacement relationship for the panel structure and quasi-steady first-order piston theory for the supersonic airflow. The discretized finite element equations are obtained by using 4-node conforming plate element. A modal reduction is performed to the finite element equations in order to suppress the panel flutter effectively and nonlinear-coupled modal equations are obtained. Numerical suppression results, which are based on the reduced nonlinear modal equations, are presented in time domain by using Newmark nonlinear time integration method.

This paper is concerned with the fuzzy control scheme and PID controller for the vibration suppression control of a cantilever beam equipped with a laser sensor and an electromagnetic actuator. The PID controller is being widely used in industrial applications. However, it is difficult to determine the appropriate PID gains in nonlinear systems and systems with time variant characteristic and so on. In this paper, we design the fuzzy based PID controller of which output gains are adjusted automatically and the designed controller is applied to active vibration control of a cantilever beam using electromagnetic actuator with strong nonlinearity. The tuning PID parameters of proposed controller are determined by using Fuzzy algorithm. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller are verified by both simulation and experiment results. Experimental results demonstrate that better control performance can be achieved in comparison with the PID cotroller.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for three 18-story office buildings to determine their inherent properties. The beam-column frame system was adopted as a typical structural form, but a core wall was added to resist the lateral force more effectively, resulting in a mixed configuration. To extract modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios from a series of vibration records at each floor, the most advanced operational system identification methods based on frequency- and time-domain like FDD, pLSCF and SSI were applied. Extracted frequencies and mode shapes from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for three buildings, however the three lower frequencies extracted were 1.2 to 1.7 times as stiff as those obtained using the initial FE models. Comparing the extracted fundamental periods with those estimated from the code equations and FE analysis, the FE analysis results showed the most flexible behavior, and the most simple equation that considers the building height as the only parameter correlated fairly well with test results. It is recognized that such a discrepancy arises from the fact that the present tests exclude the stiffness decreasing factors like concrete cracking, while the FE models ignore the stiffness increasing factors, such as the contribution of non-structural elements and the actual material properties used.
We applied the ISPSO-GLUE method, which integrates the Isolated-Speciation-based Particle Swarm Optimization (ISPSO) with the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method, to the uncertainty analysis of the Topography Model (TOPMODEL) and compared its performance with that of the GLUE method. When we performed the same number of model runs for the both methods, we were able to identify the point where the performance of ISPSO-GLUE exceeded that of GLUE, after which ISPSOGLUE kept improving its performance steadily while GLUE did not. When we compared the 95% uncertainty bounds of the two methods, their general shapes and trends were very similar, but those of ISPSO-GLUE enclosed about 5.4 times more observed values than those of GLUE did. What it means is that ISPSOGLUE requires much less number of parameter samples to generate better performing uncertainty bounds. When compared to ISPSO-GLUE, GLUE overestimated uncertainty in the recession limb following the maximum peak streamflow. For this recession period, GLUE requires to find more behavioral models to reduce the uncertainty. ISPSO-GLUE can be a promising alternative to GLUE because the uncertainty bounds of the method were quantitatively superior to those of GLUE and, especially, computationally expensive hydrologic models are expected to greatly take advantage of the feature.
