  • Seismic isolation offers an attractive approach for reducing seismic loads in the building and its components. This paper deals with the seismic isolation effects due to variation in period ratio between superstructure and isolation layer of the building. Seismic isolation effects of the moment-resisting frames with the various period ratio were studied by nonlinear time history analysis, and the guidelines on the stiffness ratio of the superstructure and isolation layer of the building for the effective seismic isolation follow from the results of this study. It is recommended that the isolation period should be greater than 2.5 times of that of the superstructure for the effective seismic isolation.

  • This study presents the optimal isolation period according to the number of vertically expended stories in order to provide the basic data for the application of the seismic isolation system in the vertically expended remodeling of the aged apartment. As a result of the structural analysis, the isolation period should be at least twice the primary structure in three-story vertical expansion, three times in two-story expansion, and four times in one-story expansion for the effective application of the isolation system. On the basis of the result, the efficacy of an isolation system for the actual apartment structure, which is three-story vertically expended, was analytically verified. The maximal acceleration response on the top floor reduced by 70% and 65% of the non-isolated structure in the X and Y directions respectively. Additionally, the base shear force decreased by 30% in the both directions, compared to the non-isolated structure.

  • In order to extend the service life of a nuclear power plant(NPP) ensuring the structural safety, effective and efficient management of NPP considering structural deteriorations and various natural hazard risks has been treated as a significant tool(IAEA 1998). The systemic efforts is required to prevent the potential loss of NPPs resulting from the natural hazard including earthquakes, hurricane and flooding since the Fukushima accident. Earthquake risk of building structures can be mitigated through appropriate seismic isolation system installation. It has been known that a seismic isolation system can lead to reduction of the deleterious effect on ground motion induced by earthquakes, and structural safety can be improved. In this paper, the NPP life-cycle management is reviewed. Furthermore, effect of seismic isolation on the NPP life-cycle cost analysis with earthquake, and cost-benefit analysis in terms of life-cycle cost when applying the seismic isolation systems to NPP are introduced.

  • The seismic isolation systems could be used to reduce the seismic response of a structure. The natural period of a structure with seismic isolation system got be long to avoid the prominent seismic period. The purpose of this study is to analyzed the seismic behavior of the truss arch that is supported to column with LRB. Truss arch structures subjected to horizontal seismic have large horizontal and vertical response unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When seismic load is applied to the truss arch with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the truss arch is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced. Also, the seismic behaviors of the truss arch with strengthen column as like lattice column are very similar to that of the truss arch supported to directly foundation. The Seismic Isolation system can be applied to reduce efficiently the seismic response of the spacial structure with not strong column.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic capacity of seismically isolated building according to the earthquake motion record selection method. To analyze the seismic behavior, 20-story building is designed, which has base isolation system. The using earthquake motion record were selected by two categories. The one is a proposed earthquake record according to soil type and response spectrum shape, and the other is a well known earthquake events such as El Centro (1940). The time history analysis results of base isolation buildings be induced difference results according to each ground motion records. Therefore detailed guidelines for the ground motion records selection method must be prepared. And the response of isolation story displacement and shear force show good seismic performance in consideration of the proposed earthquake records.

  • The various systems as the seismic resistance systems are used to reduce the seismic response of structure. And the seismic isolation system among them is the system that reduces the seismic vibration to be transmitted from foundation to upper structure. The purpose of isolation system is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

  • Scientific community agrees about the fact that base Isolation provides interesting solutions to minimize the seismic risk. Reliability of such a technique is nowadays proofed by a large number of applications like public buildings, nuclear plants, bridges, etc. This paper reports the results of performance verification tests of the base isolated RC building with the laminated rubber bearings which is manufactured by enterprise in Korea. The shaking table tests were performed using a three story model scaled to 1/3 of the prototype RC apartment building. Several major earthquake records were scaled to different peak ground accelerations and used as input base excitations. Especially in this study, effect of earthquake characteristics on response reduction and effect of the intensity of excitations are studied. Through the verification tests, the validity of the applied base isolaion device and the response reduction effect against earthquakes are confirmed.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the design table for envelope curve analysis of base isolated buildings, which represent the period of base isolated buildings and the lateral displacement of base isolation devices. For the construction of design table, $V_E$ spectrum, which represents the energy, is developed instead of acceleration of seismic hazard. Based on the seismic coefficient of UBC 97, boundary period $T_G$ and maximum velocity response $V_0$ are proposed considering Korea seismic hazard. Using $T_G$ and $V_0$, finally, $V_E$ spectrum is developed for the four types of soil conditions. Base on the $V_E$ spectrum, design table for envelope curve analysis is also developed for soil types.

  • In this study, Tridimensional Hybrid Isolation System(THIS) was proposed as a vibration isolator for traffic loads, combining vertical and horizontal isolation systems. Its efficacy in improving serviceability for vertical vibration was analytically evaluated. Firstly, for the analysis, the major vibration modes of the existing apartment were identified through eigenvalue analysis for the system and pulse response analysis for the bedroom slab using commercial structural analysis software. Subsequently, a 16-story model with horizontal, vertical and rotational degrees of freedom for each slab was numerically organized to represent the achieved modes. The dynamic analysis for the measured acceleration from an adjacent ground to high-speed railway was performed by state-space equations with the stiffness and damping ratio of THIS as variables. The result indicated that as the vertical period ratio increased, the threshold period ratio where the slab response started to be suppressed varied. Specifically, when the period ratio is greater than or equal to 5, the acceleration levels of all slabs decreased to approximately 70% or less compared to the non-isolated condition. On the other hand, it was ascertained that the influence of damping ratios on the response control of THIS is inconsequential in the analysis. Finally, the improvement in vertical vibration performance of THIS was evaluated according to design guidelines for floor vibration of AIJ, SCI and AISC. It was confirmed that, after the application of THIS, the residential performance criteria were met, whereas the non-isolated structure failed to satisfy them.
