In order to improve practical utility of agro-microorganisms (AMs) which had been cultured and disseminated to promote plant growth and to control crop diseases, 51 isolates of AMs were collected from 18 agricultural extension centers in local government and screened for multi-functions such as antifungal activity, activities of phosphorus solubilization, IAA and siderophore production, nitrogen fixation, and hydrolytic enzyme activity. Finally we selected one isolate showing good antifungal activity and multi-functions related to plant growth and disease control. The selected isolate, Paenibacillus polymyxa CW, showed good inhibitory effect against plant pathogens, Pyricularia gresea, Colletotrichum acutatum, Fusarium oxysporum, Phomopsis sp., Aspergillus niger, Rhizoctonia solani and Phytophthora capsici. Suppressive effect of P. polymyxa CW against the used plant pathogens except for R. solani was much higher than that of P. polymyxa AC-1 storing in National Academy of Agricultural Science. We found P. polymyxa CW isolate showed good activity in siderophore and IAA formation, and nitrogen fixation. With P. polymyxa CW isolate, siderophore formation activity was similar to that of P. polymyxa AC-1, but IAA formation and nitrogen fixation activity was much higher than that of P. polymyxa AC-1. However neither P. polymyxa CW nor P. polymyxa AC-1 showed hydrolytic enzyme (chitinase, pectinase and cellulase) activity. The treatment of P. polymyxa CW with culture suspension of different cell density ($10^8$, $10^7$. $10^6$ cfu/ml) showed that the highest density reduced incidence of red pepper powdery mildew by 68.3% after 10 days of application. As application density of P. polymyxa CW was decreased, its control efficacy was proportionally decreased. In addition, when P. polymyxa CW was treated to control tomato powdery mildew at the same concentrations and their control effects were investigated after 7 days of inoculation, disease incidence was 0.03, 19.5, 45.7%, respectively, compared to 56.3% that of untreated check. Like red pepper powdery mildew, increase of application density of P. polymyxa CW resulted in increase of its control efficacy proportionally. P. polymyxa CW showed a density-dependent control efficacy against red pepper and tomato powdery mildews. Therefore we think that mode of action of the antagonist for suppressing two powdery mildew diseases might be antibiosis and density of more than $10^8cfu/ml$ was needed to control effectively the two diseases. On this basis, we think that P. polymyxa CW can be a promising control agent for suppressing powdery mildews of red pepper and tomato.
This study was conducted to obtain basis information for effective weed control by the fact-finding survey of herbicides use at farmer's level and distribution of herbicide resistant weeds in paddy field of Jeonbuk province, Korea. The distributions of major paddy field weeds and frequently used herbicide according to the survey were as follows. The dominant weeds in rice paddy field were Echinochloa crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, Monochoria vaginalis, etc.. Preferred herbicides widely used by farmers were ranked in the following order, early and middle treatment (48.0%), treatment before transplanting (36.7%) and foliar treatment (15.3%). The occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds according to collected paddy soils was as follows. The occurring area of herbicide-resistant weeds was 24,413 ha, approximately 18.4% of rice cultivation area. Herbicide-resistant weeds were occurred in four species. The order of occurrence were Scirpus juncoides (39.0%) > Monochoria vaginalis (27.8%) > Echinochloa crus-galli (16.6%) and Cyperus difformis (16.6%). This information could be useful for estimation of future herbicide-resistant weed and establishment of herbicide-resistant weed control methods in Jeonbuk province, Korea.
Emulsification characters were investigated for COY (Cooking oil and Egg Yolk Mixture) and control efficacies of COY was enhanced by supplemented Sulfur wp. against paprika powdery mildews. Amount of water added to one egg yolk and 100 ml olive oil affected tbe homogenization of mixtures to emulsion profoundly; those premixes with 5~10 ml water were too concentrated to be homogenized, hence not dispersible in water; those with 15~20 ml water were homogenized, but tended to flocculation and not readily dispersible in water, suggesting the instability of emulsion; and those with 50 or 100 ml water were homogenized well and was readily dispersible in water to stable emulsion over long period of time. It was further confirmed that those fruits sprayed with not-fully emulsified COY revealed the oily membranes or blotches on their surfaces, whereas the ones with fully emulsified COY revealed normal clean surfaces. Treatment of COY either alone or in supplementation with Sulfur wettable powder (sulfur wp) were also effective in suppressing the recurrence of powdery mildew signs, wbich had disappeared in three days of foliar application. Still, the COYs supplemented with sulfur wp (COY+sulfur wp) at 1,000x or 5,000x were significantly effective in suppression against the symptomlsign recurrence over COY or sulfur wp alone.
We classified the previously reported antagonistic strains of Sorangium cellulosum into 5 subspecies (A-E). Four strains were antagonistic to Botrytis cinerea (AB group) and two strains were antagonistic to Colletotrichum acutatum (AC group). According to the genetic and sequential analyses with standard genes, xynB1, bglA2, groEL1 for grouping, all strains of AB group were belonged to subspecies C and all strains of AC group were belonged to subspecies D. In addition, high pressure liquid chromatography with the culture filtrates confirmed the genetic results, because AB group had peaks with retention time at 20-22.5 minutes, whereas AC group had no peak. There was positive relationship ($R^2=0.9652$) between the control values of infecting B. cinerea on cherry tomatoes and the main peak areas of chromatograms among the four isolates of AB group. From the subspecies results of AB group, the main peak of KYC 3270 was expected to be epothilone D. However the retention times of the standard of commercial epothilone D and the main peak of KYC 3270 culture filtrate were different as 9.9 and 11.581 min., respectively. Finally, the antagonistic metabolite of AB group was inferred as 7-ketone epothilone D.
This study was conducted to select low toxic insecticides against natural enemies, and to evaluate resistance stability and cross-resistance to resistance strain for the fulfillment of integrated pest management development. Toxicity of imidacloprid and spinosad to Amblyseius cucumeris was relatively low regardless of the adopting test methods. In addition, those to the Amblyseius fallacis was also low by slide dipping method. The slide dipping method was useful to eliminate repellency effect by mites to the tested insecticides. Mortality of A. fallacis to deltamethrin recorded in 1994 and 1999 was 21.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the permethrin-resistanct strain of A. fallacis was maintained its resistance to deltamethrin. However, the cross-resistance to the newly introduced insecticides namely imidacloprid, fipronil, chlorfenapyr, abamectin, and spinosad. was relatively low.
This study was carried out to select chemicals those are effective for the control of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides of Lycium chinense Miller. Dithidone and Propy wettable powders (WP) were treated to Chungyang native variety for the test of control effect The effect was examined after dilution the solution with 500 times, and chemicals injury was treated with 250 times of diluted solution. The results were as follows ; 1. Occurrence of the disease was most serious in min- Ju1y and in mid- August, and the attacking of the disease was highest at about $25^{\circ}C$ of growing temperature. 2. The control of Propy WP was most effective and its control value was average 81.5% in the treated area. 3. Chemicals injury of Dithidone and Propy was not occurred at the double-diluted solution trestment.

One of the most important vegetables consumed in Korea, chili peppers (Capsicum annuum) are widely cultivated around the world. Chili peppers have been severely damaged by anthracnose during their growth, so it is important to study prevention and resistance varieties. K1 anthracnose was inoculated against four cultivar of chili peppers that are resistant to anthracnose and one cultivar that is sensitive. The area of the disease that appeared over time was photographed and quantified through the program was analyzed. Through the ratio of the area of chili pepper fruit and the area of the bottle, the sensitive variety An-S showed weak reactions to anthracnose with about 40%, the resistant variety An-12R (23%), An-Tan (21%), and An-9R (19%), and PBC81 showed a strong response to anthracnose with about 11%. These quantitative value can be used as a basis for comparison in conducting resistance studies for new varieties.
Damage of tea bagworms, Eumeta minuscula was observed for the first time from grape leaves of grape (varieties: Cambell Early and M.B.A.) from a vinery at Gumho-up, Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk on 31 August, 2012. Activity of insecticides [Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (serotype IIIa, IIIb) WP, chlorantraniliprole 5% GP, methoxyfenozide 21% SC, spinetoram 5% GP, and spinosad 10% GP] was tested on fourth instar larvae of Eumeta minuscula in laboratory. Mortality of 4th instar of Eumeta minuscula was higher when treated with spinosad 10% WG (88.7%) and spinetoram 5% WG (67.7%) sprayed with field recommended concentration using a home sprayer in laboratory. Mortality decreased as the concentration decreased, however leaf damage rate was significantly different between the one-fourth rate and the control. Spinetoram 5% WG and spinosad 10% WG showed 63.7 and 55.7% respectively mortality of fourth instar Eumeta minuscula in field. Though these two insecticides could be used for the control of bagworms on grape, a more effective insecticide needs to be found.
In recent years, not only the cultivation area of Jujube in Korea but also the number of pest species has increased. The farmers farming environmentally friendly are in great difficulty because there are no effective control devices. This study was conducted to investigate the control effect of the insect screen net on three pest species (Apolygus spinolae, Dasineura sp. and Carposina sasakii) in Jujube orchard when the pests were blocked by insect screen net. For the first and second surveys, the damage rates by A. spinolae were 9.06, 13.95% in 50 mesh, 4.75, 10.17% in 25 mesh, 5.68, 11.84% in 18mesh mesh of insect screen net and 21.6, 36.34% in untreated insect screen net, respectively. The damage rates by Dasineura sp. were 0.54, 0.13% in 50 mesh, 0.93, 2.84% in 25 mesh, 1.05, 13.45% in 18 mesh mesh of insect screen net and 11.1, 26.65% in untreated insect screen net. Carposina sasakii were completely blocked in all the treatments. Damages on Jujube were not observed by insect screen net. Therefore, insect screen net is effective on insect pest control for Jujube.
