Emerging next-generation storage technologies such as non-volatile memory will help eliminate almost all of the storage latency that has plagued previous storage devices. In conventional storage systems, the latency of slow storage devices dominates access latency; hence, software efficiency is not critical. With low-latency storage, software costs can quickly dominate memory latency. Hence, researchers have proposed the memory mapped file I/O to avoid the software overhead. Mapping a file into the user memory space enables users to access the file directly. Therefore, it is possible to avoid the complicated I/O stack. This minimizes the number of user/kernel mode switchings. In addition, there is no data copy between kernel and user areas. Despite of the benefits in the memory mapped file I/O, its overhead still needs to be addressed, as the existing mechanism for the memory mapped file I/O is designed for slow block devices. In this paper, we identify the overheads of the memory mapped file I/O via experiments.
The desire to access data faster and the growth of next-generation memories such as non-volatile memories, contribute to the development of research on memory file systems. It is recommended that memory mapped file I/O, which has less overhead than read-write I/O, is utilized in a high-performance memory file system. Memory mapped file I/O, however, brings a page table overhead, which becomes one of the big overheads that needs to be resolved in the entire file I/O performance. We find that same overheads occur unnecessarily, because a page table of a file is removed whenever a file is opened after being closed. To remove the duplicated overhead, we propose the mapping cache, a technique that does not delete a page table of a file but saves the page table to be reused when the mapping of the file is released. We demonstrate that mapping cache improves the performance of traditional file I/O by 2.8x and web server performance by 12%.

Recently the mobile DBMS (Database Management System) is popular to store and manage large data in a mobile device. Especially, the research and development about mobile storage structure and querying method for navigation map data in a mobile device have been performed. The performance of the mobile DBMS in which random data accesses are most queries if the NAND flash memory is used as storage media of the DBMS is degraded. The reason is that the performance of flash memory is good in writing sequentially but bad in writing randomly as the features of the NAND flash memory. So, new storage structure and querying policies of the mobile DBMS are needed in the mobile DBMS in which a flash memory is used as storage media. In this paper, we have studied the policy of the database page management to enhance the performance of the frequent random update and applied this policy to the navigation-specialized mobile DBMS which supports incremental map update. And also we have evaluated the performance of this policy by experiments.

In this paper, the Linux kernel memory map was analyzed as the approach to Improving performance for Embedded Linux system. Since the Linux kernel memory map supporting a stability and various H/W platforms and in which it becomes to the general purpose system with optimization manages the role of being important in the booting time and the efficient system utilization of resources, the analysis of the kernel memory map is required for the performance improvement of the Embedded Linux system in which it is restrictive the resources. According to the analysis result, and of the Linux kernel memory, the booting speed of and improvement of the memory efficiency were confirmed. It is therefore considered that the proposed in this paper and kernel memory allocation method are suitable to the memory availability improvement of the Embedded Linux system.
This paper presents a model for diagnosing students'learning misconceptions in the domain of heat and temperature using fuzzy cognitive maps(FCM) and fuzzy associative memory(FAM). In a model for diagnosing learning misconceptions. an FCM can represent with cause and effect between preconceptions and misconceptions that students have about scientific phenomenon. An FAM which represents a neurallike memory for memorizing causal relationships is used to diagnose causes of misconceptions in learning. This study will present a new method for more autonomous and intelligent system than a model to diagnose misconceptions that was being done with classical methods in learning and may contribute as an intelligent tutoring system for learning diagnosis within various educational contexts.

In recent system-on-chip (SoC) designs, several hundred embedded memory cores have occupied the largest portion of the chip area. Therefore, the yield of SoCs is strongly dependent on the yield of the embedded memory cores. If all memories had built-in self repair (BISR) with optimal repair rates, the area overhead would be very large. A bit-map sharing method using a memory grouping is proposed to reduce the area overhead. Since the bit-map memory occupies the largest portion of the area of the built-in redundancy analysis (BIRA), the proposed bit-map sharing method can greatly reduce the area overhead of the BIRA. Based on the experimental results, the proposed method can reduce the area overhead by about 80%.
The operating systems in the system architecture, which is integrated several applications and modular electronic devices in the same computing device, demand partitioning technology for safety. Thus, operation system requires partition scheduler for partition scheduling. When we design partition scheduler in embedded system, which has small memory and low performance, such as space system, we must consider not only performance but also memory. In this paper, we introduces a linux-based memory efficient partition scheduler using partition bitmap. This partition scheduler demands small memory space and produce low partition switching overhead. The prototype was executed on a LEON4 processor, which is the Next Generation Multicore Processor (NGMP) in the space sector. In evaluation, this prototype shows accuracy, additional memory space and low partition switching overhead.

In this paper, we propose the structure of utilizing the memory map, which is using not conventional DRAM but SDRAM, for the hardware implementation of frame memory interface module to the video encoder. As reducing the size of memory map and interface buffer within the same bus, the hardware complexity is improved and the hardware size is minimized as simplifying the interface logic. The conventional system is wasted access time, because of accessing randomly stored data in order to store and output the memories in macro-block unit. therefore the method, which is proposed in this paper, can be effectively reducing the access time of memory, because of the data is stored and processed by line unit.
