Computation-Communication Overlapping in AES-CCM Using Thread-Level Parallelism on a Multi-Core Processor (멀티코어 프로세서의 쓰레드-수준 병렬성을 활용한 AES-CCM 계산-통신 중첩화)

  • Multi-core processors are becoming increasingly popular. As they are widely adopted in embedded systems as well as desktop PC's, many multimedia applications are being parallelized on multi-core platforms. However, it is difficult to parallelize applications with inherent data dependencies such as encryption algorithms for multimedia data. In order to overcome this limit, we propose a technique to overlap computation and communication using an otherwise idle core in this paper. In particular, we interpret the problem of multimedia computation and communication as a pipeline design problem at the application program level, and derive an optimal number of stages in the pipeline.

  • 본 논문에서는 현재 연구 개발되고 있는 HDSL/ADSL 시스템의 동작환경과 채널(선로감쇄(propagation loss), NEXT, 충격잡음 등)에 관하여 언급한 후, 전체 시스템의 구조 및 동작 원리를 기술하였다. 연구 개발된 HDSL/ADSL 전체시스템은 64-CAP 전송방식을 기반으로 Tomlinson precoder, Trellis코드, modulo Viterbi복호기, Convolutional-interleaved R-S 부호기/복호기, Hybrid-DFE, 반향 제거기, 타이밍 복원회로 등으로 구성되어 있다. HDSL/ADSL 전송시스템의 모든 기능들은 디지털로 구현되었으며, 칩 구현을 위하여 각 기능들의 VLSI 시스템 파라메터들을 추출하고 성능시험을 실시하였다.

  • 주문형 비디오나 원격 회의 그리고 원격 강의와 같은 멀티미디어 애플리케이션들은 비디오나 오디오와 같은 멀티미디어 트래픽을 유발한다. 이러한 멀티미디어 트래픽의 가장 큰 특성은 폭주성이다. 폭주성은 통신망의 효율을 떨어뜨리는 매우 중요한 요인이며, 따라서 폭주성에 대처할 수 있는 효율적인 대역폭 할당 정책이 통신망 관리에서 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 멀티캐스팅 방식의 온라인 비디오 애플리케이션에 대해서 대역폭 완화 작업이라고 불리우는 효율적이고 유용한 대역폭 할당 방안을 설계하였다. 본 논문에서 제시하는 새로운 대역폭 완화 기법은 비디오 서버에서 이미 전송된 데이타의 특성을 이용하여 대역폭 완화창의 크기를 조절하는 동적인 기법이다. 몇 가지 MPEG 트레이스들로 실험했을 때 기존의 온라인 대역폭 완화 기법과 비슷한 성능을 보이고, 특히 멀티캐스팅 방식의 온라인 비디오 서비스에 대해서는 서버의 자원 효율성을 향상시킴을 알 수 있었다. Abstract All of the multimedia applications such as VOD, teleconferencing, and tele-lecturing invoke multimedia traffic like video or audio traffic. The most important characteristic of these multimedia traffic is the burstiness property. So, bandwidth management is becoming the major part of network management. In this paper, we propose a new and efficient bandwidth management technique called bandwidth smoothing for the multicasting on-line video applications. Our bandwidth smoothing technique reduces as much of the network bandwidth required to transmit on-line video traffic as previously proposed methods, and improves the server's resource utilization especially for the multicast on-line video services.

  • 현대사회의 정보화, 고도화 및 멀티미디어화 추세에 따라 고속의 정보이동 및 전송 속도가 요구되고 있다. 특히, 인터넷 방송, VOD 등 대용량 광대역 멀티미디어 전송에 대한 필요성이 어느 때 보다도 절실하게 요구되고 있는데, 이러한 조류에 부응하여 ADSL(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), CATV 및 위성 등을 이용한 고속 데이터 통 신 서비스가 활발하게 제공되고 있다. 특히, 방송과 통신의 융합화 추세에 따라 기존의 방송 매체로만 인식하던 위성을 이용하여 위성 인터넷 서비스를 한국통신을 비롯하여 삼성, I-Link, IBSat, 한독, 미래온라인, 한별 텔레콤 등 다수 업체가 제공 추진 중에 있어 위성 인 터넷 시장이 활성화될 것으로 예상된다. 이에 본고에서는 무궁화 위성을 이용한 위성 멀티 미디어 시스템의 기술적 특성, 위성 인터넷 시장전망 및 서비스의 종류에 관하여 기술한다.

A File System for User Special Functions using Speed-based Prefetch in Embedded Multimedia Systems (임베디드 멀티미디어 재생기에서 속도기반 미리읽기를 이용한 사용자기능 지원 파일시스템)

  • Portable multimedia players have some different properties compared to general multimedia file server. Some of those properties are single user ownership, relatively low hardware performance, I/O burst by user special functions, and short software development cycles. Though suitable for processing multiple user requests at a time, the general multimedia file systems are not efficient for special user functions such as fast forwards/backwards. Soml' methods has been proposed to improve the performance and functionality, which the application programs give prediction hints to the file system. Unfortunately, they require the modification of all applications and recompilation. In this paper, we present a file system that efficiently supports user special functions in embedded multimedia systems using file block allocation, buffer-cache, and prefetch. A prefetch algorithm, SPRA (SPeed-based PRefetch Algorithm) predicts the next block using I/O patterns instead of hints from applications and it is resident in the file system, so doesn't affect application development process. From the experimental file system implementation and comparison with Linux readahead-based algorithms, the proposed system shows $4.29%{\sim}52.63%$ turnaround time and 1.01 to 3,09 times throughput in average.

A Kernel-level RTP for Efficient Support of Multimedia Service on Embedded Systems (내장형 시스템의 원활한 멀티미디어 서비스 지원을 위한 커널 수준의 RTP)

  • Since the RTP is suitable for real-time data transmission in multimedia services like VoD, AoD, and VoIP, it has been adopted as a real-time transport protocol by RTSP, H.323, and SIP. Even though the RTP protocol stack for embedded systems has been in great need for efficient support of multimedia services, such a stack has not been developed yet. In this paper, we explain embeddedRTP which supports the RTP protocol stack at the kernel level so that it is suitable for embedded systems. Since embeddedRTP is designed to reside in the UBP module, existing applications which rely ell TCP/IP services can proceed the same as before, while applications which rely on the RTP protocol stack can request HTP services through embeddedRTp API. EmbeddedRTP stores transmitted RTP packets into per session packet buffer, using the packet's port number and multimedia session information. Communications between applications and embeddedRTP is performed through system calls and signal mechanisms. Additionally, embeddedRTP API makes it possible to develop applications more conveniently. Our performance test shows that packet-processing speed of embeddedRTP is about 7.5 times faster than that oi VCL RTP for multimedia streaming services on PDA in spite that its object code size is reduced about by 58% with respect to UCL RTP's.

Verification of the Multi-channel Audio Service over T-DMB (지상파 DMB를 통한 멀티채널 오디오 서비스 검증에 관한 연구)

  • According to the advancement of multimedia compression technologies, high quality multi-media services are easily found in common life. Along with this situation, 5.1-channel audio service also has expanded the application area to home theater system and car theater system and consumer can easily take a chance to experience the feeling of 5.1-channel audio. On the other hand, terrestrial DMB service has been launched in Korea from Dec. 2005 as a handhold multi-media broadcasting service. However, multi-channel audio was not considered due to the insufficiency of bandwidth and the handhold usage. Lately, MPEG is standardizing high efficiency multi-channel audio compression technology for handheld broadcasting service, and several trial for application is introduced in Europe. In this paper, we would like to explain multi-channel audio compression technology, describe the implementation of the verification system for the multi-channel audio service over T-DMB and investigate the possibility of further realization of the service.

  • Today, thanks to the spread of Internet and the development of various multimedia technologies, broadcasting environment is changing in a way to merging broadcasting and communication environment. In such a new environment, transparent delivery and interoperability between different technologies become an important issue. In ISO/IEC MPEG meeting, MPEG-21 has been established. In MPEG-21, it is discussed actively about big picture to build an infrastructure for the delivery and consumption of multimedia contents. In this paper, we have applied Digital Item in MPEG-21 to broadcasting contents. Broadcasting Digital Item is generated using MPEG-7 MDS for the description of resources as well as Digital Item Declaration, and Digital Item Identification. Furthermore, we develop Digital Item generation system and parsing system. In experiment, we verify the usefulness of Broadcasting Digital Item by generating an education video contents and consuming it at different user environments.

Effective Motion Compensation Method of H.264 on Multimedia Mobile System (멀티미디어 모바일 시스템에서의 효율적인 H.264 움직임 보간법)

  • Power-aware design is one of the most important areas to be emphasized in multimedia mobile systems, in which data transfers dominate the power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new architecture for motion compensation (MC) of H.264/AVC with power reduction by decreasing the data transfers. For this purpose, a reconfigurable microarchitecture based on data type is proposed for interpolation and it is mapped onto the dedicated motion compensation IP (intellectual property) effectively without sacrificing the performance or the system latency. The original quarter-pel interpolation equation that consists of one or two half-pel interpolations and one averaging operation is designed to have different execution control modes, which result in decreasing memory accesses greatly and maintaining the system efficiency. The simulation result shows that the proposed method could reduce up to 87% of power consumption caused by data transfers over the conventional method in MC module.

Efficient FFT Algorithm and Hardware Implementation for High Speed Multimedia Communication Systems (고속 멀티미디어 통신시스템을 위한 효율적인 FFT 알고리즘 및 하드웨어 구현)

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient FFT algorithm for high speed multimedia communication systems, and present its pipeline implementation results. Since the proposed algorithm is based on the radix-4 butterfly unit, the processing rate can be twice as fast as that based on the radix-2$^3$ algorithm. Also, its implementation is more area-efficient than the implementation from conventional radix-4 algorithm due to reduced number of nontrivial multipliers like using the radix-23 algorithm. In order to compare the proposed algorithm with the conventional radix-4 algorithm, the 64-point MDC pipelined FFT processor based on the proposed algorithm was implemented. After the logic synthesis using 0.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ technology, the logic gate count for the processor with the proposed algorithm is only about 70% of that for the processor with the conventional radix-4 algorithm. Since the proposed algorithm can be achieve higher processing rate and better efficiency than the conventional algorithm, it is very suitable for the high speed multimedia communication systems such as WLAN, DAB, DVB, and ADSL/VDSL systems.
