A study was conducted to investigate the correlation of cecal anaerobic bacterial counts with the cecal length in growing chicks. Half of 160 chicks of five weeks old were housed in cages and the remainings were kept with goats in free-range and allowed to have free access to goat's feed and faeces. All the experimental birds were fed ad libitum on a commercial chick formula diet during the period of 5 to 12 weeks of age. Body weight was larger in birds reared in the cage than in those reared on the field at 8 weeks of age (P<0.05), but vice versa at the end of experiment (P<0.05). The cecal length was longer in field-rearing than in cage-rearing at 6, 9, 10 and 11 weeks of age (P<0.05). The cecal length was correlated with body weight gain in both rearing groups (r=0.816 f3r cage-rearing, r=0.816 for field-rearing). The cecal anaerobic bacterial counts were significantly higher in field- rearing than in cage-rearing at 6, 9, 10 and 11 weeks of age (P<0.05). The cecal length was highly correlated with cecal anaerobic bacterial counts in cage- (r=0.9549) and field-(r=0.9866) rearing. It is concluded that the correlation of increase cecal length with increased cecal anaerobic bacterial counts ted a libelous of goat's faeces in growing chicks.

This study examined the improving effect of DFA IV obtained from bacterial fermentation on the gut health. The effects of the dietary DFA IV on the intestinal mass, short chain fatty acids production and pH were evaluated in vivo. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed the 0% (control) or 1% DFA IV supplemented diets for 3 weeks. Supplementation of DFA IV resulted in a significant increase in cecal tissue and wall weights. Together with the lowering of the cecal and colonic pH, the amount of acetate and butyrate increased by 1.6 and 3.2 fold of the control group in the cecum, respectively, in the rats fed DFA IV diets. The DFA IV diet also significantly increased the cecal lactate 1.5 fold compared to the control diet, indicating that dietary DFA IV stimulated the growth of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria in the intestine. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the dietary DFA IV may be used as a putative prebiotic supplement.
The large intestine of the chicken differs both anatomically and physiologically from the pig's large intestine and the men of the cow. The chicken's large intestine is less developed than the pig's large intestine or the cow's lumen. This paper summaries these differences. The chicken's large intestine contains a microbiological population similar to that found in the rumen. The chicken's caeca especially contains a large number of microorganisms, but this population varies according to age, fred, maturity, antibiotic use and etc.. Protein is an essential nutrient for the formation of intestinal microvilli. A study showed that the length of the small intestine was 63 % of the total gastrointestinal tract (GIT) length, while caecum was 8.1 %, and the colon and rectum were 4.6 %. The establishment of the microbial population of the small intestine occurs earlier than that of the caeca, but the identity of approximately 90 % of microbial population of the chicken GIT is hon. Recent studies have shown that energy, volatile fatty acid (VFA) and electrolytes that are found in the large intestine may be absorbed to a certain degree. The chicken small intestine is the primary location for digestion with a variety of enzymes being secreted here. Much research is being conducted into the digestion of sucrose thermal oligosaccharide caramel (STOP), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), mannanoligosaccharide (MOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and isomalto-oligosaccharides (IMO) in the chicken caeca and large intestine. Excessive fibre content in the feed has detrimental effects, but proper fibre supplementation to chicken diets can improve the length and capacity of the small intestine.
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary Zizyphus jujuba seed meal on broiler performance, small intestine and cecal length, gizzard weight and fecal gas emission. A total of 180 day-old broiler chicks (Ross) were randomly divided into 4 groups, fed the commercial diet containing 0, 0.3 (T1), 0.6 (T2) and 0.9 % (T3) of Zizyphus jujuba seed meal from two to 5 weeks of age. Body weight gain and feed efficiency (feed/gain) were significantly increase in T2 than other groups at 3 weeks age (P<0.05). There was no statistical difference in body weight gain and feed efficiency (feed/gain) by feeding Zizyphus jujuba seed meal, although they tended to be improved by treatment during whole experimental period (5 weeks age). The gizzard weights of three treatment groups were higher than control. But no difference among three treatment groups was observed. The small intestine and cecal length was no change by feeding Zizyphus jujuba seed meal. Emission of $NH_3$ and VFA gas from excreta were significantly decreased from 5 to 10 days of storage period (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the addition of Zizyphus jujuba seed meal at 0.3 to 0.6 % to the diet has increased digestibility of feed and the reduction of $NH_3$ emissions from feces, there was a possibility of improvement in body weight gain of broiler chickens.
To examine functionality of depolymerized alginate obtained by hydrolysis of alginate through a heating process at $121^{\circ}C$ on gastrointestinal physiology, the changes of body weight, organ weight and length, pancreatic and small intestinal composition, and light microscopy (LM) observation of small intestinal microvilli's appearances were checked in the rats. Rats were fed diets containing $1\%, 5\%, and 10\%$ of each depolymerized alginate (HAG-10, HAG-50, HAG-100) and alginate for 35 days, The feeding of 5 and $10\%$ HAG-50 and $10\%$ alginate diets for 35 days significantly depressed the body weight gain, but increased the length and weight of the small intestine and cecum in rats (p<0.01). Pancreatic protease activity was decreased significantly (p<0.01) in all groups except lo/o of HAG-10 diets, but the protein content increased in all groups, However, pancreatic amylase and lipase activities as well as DNA and RNA content were not significantly different. The small intestinal protein and the DNA content were the highest in diets fed $5\%$ HAG-50; RNA content increased significantly (p<0.01) in all groups except in the fiber-free diets. Light microscopy (LM) observation showed growth of small intestinal microvilli with numerous ridges; the multiplication of the convolution goblet cells in rats fed with diets containing $5\%$ of HAG-50 were more than others group.

We investigated the effects of dietary pearlzyme (mudflat-bacteria origin protease) on growth performance and development of digestive organs in broilers. Two hundred forty, 4 day-old female Ross broiler chicks were divided into 2 groups (control vs. pearlzyme) which were randomly housed in 8 pens with 15 chicks/pen. They were fed one of two diets containing pearlzyme at 0 or 0.1% for 4 weeks. Dietary pearlzyme resulted in significant increase in body weight during the first week of the experiment (p<0.05). With age, weight gain and feed efficiency continued to decrease reaching significant level during the last week. Mortality was 3.3% in control but not in pearlzyme during the entire period of the experiment. Dietary pearlzyme resulted in increased weight (p<0.05) in the ceca and rectum, and increased length in the ceca (p<0.05). However, there were tendencies to increase the weight of the gizzard (p<0.071) but to decrease the length of the small intestine (p<0.068). The results of the current study show that dietary pearlzyme affects weight gain and the development of digestive organs.

The objectives of this study was to determine whether a new physically modified cornstarch by ultra-fine- or nanoscale pulverizer to reduce particle size offers better bioactive function than native cornstarch in weanling Sprague-Dawley rats. Male weaning Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing native cornstarch (NAC), ultra fine pulverized cornstarch (UFC) or nano-scale pulverized cornstarch (NSC) for 4 weeks. In vitro rate of starch hydrolysis, growth performance, organ weight, intestine length intestinal proliferation and the fermentation by Bifidobacterium of rat cecum were evaluated. The diet with reduced particle size (UFC or NSC) significantly increased body weight gain and organ weight. Feed efficiency was increased in NSC fed rats and was not affected in UFC fed rats. Intestinal proliferation was decreased in NSC group. Reduction of particle size also increased cecal short chain fatty acid concentration and the growth and acidifying activity of Bifidobacterium. It is concluded that a reduction of particle size of starch granules by physically modification may increase growing performance and gut function.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary softwood by-products extract on growth performance, organ weight and intestinal microbes in organic broiler chicks. Five treatments were assigned to 200 broiler chicks with four replication, allocating 10 broiler chicks in each replication. Dietary treatments included control(Organic diet), +C(Organic diet + antibiotics), T1(Organic diet + softwood by-product powder 3.0%), T2(Organic diet + softwood by-product extract 0.05%) and T3(Organic diet + softwood by-product extract 0.1%). Body weight gain was higher in +C and T3 for overall period than control and T1. Feed efficiency of were slightly improved in +C and T3 groups compared with that of control and T1. The small intestine weight tended to be higher in control and +C, but it's length showed high in only T1 group. Gizzard weight was significantly higher in T2 compared with other treatments(P<0.05). In contrast, spleen weight was significantly lower in control group(P<0.05), whereas the weight of cecum and liver were not significantly different by dietary treatment. Intestinal microflora was significantly lower or/and seemed to be low in softwood by-products treatment groups than control. Digestibility of energy and protein were statistically lower in control and T1 than other treatments(P<0.05). The IgG concentration of birds fed antibiotics, softwood by-product extract was higher than control and T1, but was no significance. The results of this experiments indicated that softwood by-product extract would be possible to apply for the feed additive in organic broiler diets.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of organic acid mixture on growth performance, cecal microflora, blood characteristics and immune response in broiler chicks and to prove the possibility of organic acid mixture as an alternative to antibiotics growth promotor. A total of four hundred eighty, 1-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross$\times$Ross 308) were randomly divided into 4 groups with 4 replicates of 30 birds each. The treatments were NC (free antibiotics), PC (basal diet with virginiamycin 10 ppm and salinomycin 60 ppm), 0.3% organic acid, and 0.5% organic acid. The final body weight and body weight gain were significantly higher in organic acid 0.5% than NC (P<0.05). The feed conversion ratio in all treated groups were significantly improved as compared to that of NC (P<0.05). The carcass rate and relative organs weight were not significantly difference among the groups. The relative weight and length of small intestine in PC were significantly decreased than the other groups. The numbers of cecal coliform bacteria and Salmonella in all treated groups were significantly lower than NC (P<0.05). The number of cecal lactic acid bacteria was not different among the groups. No significant differences among the groups were observed in the contents of total cholesterol, triglyceride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in blood serum. The contents of total protein and globulin in blood serum of PC and organic acid treated groups were significantly increased as compared to those of NC (P<0.05). Therefore, albumin:globulin ratio of PC and organic acid treated groups was significantly lower than NC (P<0.05). The total white blood cell (WBC), heterophil, lymphocyte, and stress indicator (heterophil:lymphocyte ratio) were not significantly different among the groups. No significant difference was observed on the expression rate of splenic cytokines mRNA in organic acid treated groups compared to the control. Consequently, supplemental organic acid mixture improved the growth performance, and influenced positive effects on the intestinal microflora by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria without any adverse effects on relative weights of organs and blood biochemical parameters in broiler chicks.
