  • The bearing capacity of drilled shafts that take excavation by Percussion Rrotary Drilling(PRD) into consideration was evaluated using static and dynamic pile load tests. The emphasis was on quantifying the allowable bearing capacity and point load-transfer at the pile tip on seven instrumented steel piles. Of the seven instrumented piles, five piles are placed to the bottom of the excavation by rotary and pushing into the final depth of the excavation, as opposed to the two driven piles. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that the skin friction mobilized by PRD is much greater than point resistance, whereas in driven piles, the point resistance is greater than skin friction. It is also found that much greater pile capacity was proved in the case of drilled shafts, compared to the driven piles and thus, the excavation by rotary drilling gives reliable pile capacity required to design axially loaded piles.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the end bearing capacity of a pile in cohesionless soils. The ode of failure of soil due to pile installation is assumed from experimental observation of actual soil deformation. A new solution is proposed complying with the assumed mode of failure by employing the theory of cavity expansion. The effect of curvature of failure envelope is studied in relation to tile proposed solution. The influence of a curved failure envelope becomes larger with increasing degree of curvature and the level of confining stress. This effect in some cases or reduce the end bearing capacity by tore the 80 percent compared with that given by a straight failure envelope. For practical application of tile proposed solution, the method of determining the average volume change in the plastic zone is re-evaluated. The proposed solution is confirmed by comparing the theoretical values with experimental results obtained from model pile tests in a calibration chamber. The comparison shows that the proposed solution provides a reasonable prediction of end bearing capacity for both weak and strong grained soils.

  • In this study, estimate solution of ultimate axial capacity for axial loaded pile is proposed using step-wised shape. This is verified for effective appling on realistic factor by calibration chamber tests. Estimation method of ultimate axial capacity in this study is verified by calibration chamber test. The results of ultimate axial capacity through this proposed method have sufficiently low standard derivations and COVs. Also, this is verified through test that method is similarly resulted with measured values.

  • Recently, the calculation of horizontal bearing capacity of piles foundation has been considered very important for earthquake or wind resistant design in Korea. This study deals with the lateral resistance of PHC pile instead of vertical capacity for earthquake resistant design as well as wind. As case study, the prediction values were compared with measured ones based on ASTM. During this research, Matlock & Reese, Davisson & Gill, Broms and Chang's methods were selected in calculating prediction of lateral resistance of PHC piles. In decomposed granite and clayey soils, The result showed that prediction values proposed by Matlock & Reese(Davisson & Gill), Chang and Broms were smaller values than real values. four proposed methods by Matlock & Reese(Davisson & Gill) and Chang based on lateral deflection and Broms by ultimate lateral resistance turned out valid in view of engineering practice.

  • Recently, auger-drilled piling has been widely used in urban area to reduce the air pollution and noise. But this construction method that its basic theory was introduced from Japan may be changed depending on the each piling company and construction field condition. Therefore, the design code and management method for auger-drilled piling is not defined yet. Especially, the lack of research on the bearing capacity of auger-drilled piling leads to the absence of rational bearing capacity prediction equation. This paper presents the optimum design code and economical construction method of the auger-drilled piling by proposing the new bearing capacity prediction equation based on the site specific soil types and construction conditions. In this paper, existing bearing capacity prediction equations and current pile load tests were compared. And the end bearing capacity and skin friction characteristics were also analyzed by comparing the results of CAPWAP. From the results of analysis, a reliable bearing capacity prediction equation considered soil types is proposed.

  • Several domestic and foreign design methods for rock socketed drilled shafts were introduced in this study. In order to verify these design methods, the results of field pile load tests were compared with predicted capacities using them. Based on this study, AASHTO(1996) and FHWA(1999) design methods tend to underestimate, and CFEM(2006) and NAVFAC(1982) tend to overestimate. The difference between the predicted and measured values was caused by reflecting different rock socket geometry and also different rock properties in each design method.

  • This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.

  • In this research problems of recent design methods and their improvement for SIP in domestic areas were studied by using the characteristics of load-settlement curves and bearing capacity from field loading tests. Elastic and plastic settlement for total settlement in each loading step conducted domestic areas had a tendency. From these tendency and bearing capacity determined by loading tests we can ascertain that empirical chart can be assistant tool in SIP design. It showes that SIP design using N-value in domestic area with soil condition of grarute type results in very conservative bearing capacity, to be opposed in soil with unprofitable geological condition the design can be insecure. Also, we can ascertain that Meyerhof's bearing capacity used modified N-value on tip part of pile is more applicable than recent design method where tip bearing capacity is 20NAp N-value limited to 50. These results show that modified design method can he more economic than before because of using pile's bearing capacity to tolerable load of pile material.

  • The bearing capacity of open-ended piles is affected by the degree of soil plugging, which is quantified by the IFR. There is not at present a design criterion for open-ended piles that explicitly considers the effect of IFR on pile load capacity In order to investigate this effect, model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on instrumented open-ended piles. The results of these tests show that the IFR increases with increasing relative density and increasing horizontal stress of soils. The unit base and shaft resistances decrease with increasing IFR. Based on the results of the model pile tests, new empirical relations for base load capacity and shaft load capacity of open-ended piles are proposed. In order to check the accuracy of predictions made with the proposed equations, the equations were applied to the full-scale pile load test preformed in this study, Based on the comparisons with the pile load test results, the proposed equations appear to produce satisfactory predictions.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. A laboratory model test was carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. According to the test, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel rile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. As a result, it is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel material seems better than sand material in bearing capacity and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as compaction pile than as drain from in-situ test on bearing capacity. Increase of bearing capacity with gravel pile means an effect of composite ground by stiffness of gravel material. It can lie supposed to use gravel pile instead of sand pile in view of consolidation effect and bearing capacity.
