  • In this paper, the displacement and stress of pile foundation constructed in the soft cohesive soils were measured and investigated at each construction phase. The piles belongs to compressive stress then extension due to lateral flow of soft soils. Battered piles showed different stress state according to construction direction. The lateral displacements of piles radically occurred at the embankment phase.

  • A two-dimensional numerical analysis was performed on the depth of pile embedment, the magnitude of the residual water level, and the condition of the presence or absence of cap concrete to understand the behavior of the block-type quay wall with piles. The results showed the control effect of the lateral displacement of the quay wall depending on the embedment of the pile. When the piles were not embedded, the lateral displacement of the quay wall increased proportionally as the residual water level difference increased. In contrast, when the piles were embedded into the ground, the control of the lateral displacement of the quay wall was greatly exerted even if the residual water level difference increased. There was little difference in the lateral displacement of the block-type quay wall regardless of the presence or absence of cap concrete. Under the condition where the piles were embedded down to the rubble mound layer, the piles exhibited the rotational behavior seen in the short piles. As the embedment depth of the piles increased, the piles showed the same bending behavior as the intermediate piles. Thus, the piles significantly contribute to the control of lateral displacement in the block-type quay wall with piles.

  • The lateral behavior characteristics of concrete group pile under the lateral load were examined by the laboratory model tests in this study. Piles were socketed 1D(D : pile diameter) in the concrete block, and model tests were executed on $2{\times}3$ group piles, of which the length were 11D, 15D and 20D. All results of loading tests under each condition was presented by the lateral load-displacement curves, and the displacements in the ground under the lateral loads were measured. As a results of model tests, as the ratio of pile length/diameter(L/D) was decreased, the yielding load and the lateral displacement at that load were increased. The yielding load was evaluated as the load at lateral displacement of 15 mm. The yielding loads at the pile length of 11D, 15D and 20D were 11.7, 6.2kN and 3.4kN. The lateral displacements of pile in the ground under each condition were measured linearly and the failure occurred at the location where the piles were socketed in concrete block.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of the pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was 1.9 times larger than that of the steel pipe pile and similar with that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • Finite number of pile elements are considered in load transfer method. And section force and movement of each pile element are computed by considering compatibilities between pile displacement and the load transfer along a pile and between displacement and resistance at the tip of the pile. For the conventional load transfer method, large amount of computations due to iterations are needed. Formulation of finite difference equation from the differential equation which depicts pile behavior under axial loading was accomplished in order to simplify the computation for obtaining pile section forces and displacements. By comparing the results between the simplified computation method and the reported data, there was no difference between the two results.

  • In order to investigate the influence of installation angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their lateral load capacities, model tests of lateral loads on RRP with various installation angles $0^{\circ}\;, 5^{\circ}\;, 10^{\circ}\;, 15^{\circ}\;, 20^{\circ}\;,and 25^{\circ}$ are carried out. One set of RRP consists of 12 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 6 piles. Each pile made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 350mm in length, is coated with sand until the bar has the diameter of 6.5mm. According to the test results, RRP's response is travily influenced by the displacement level. At low displacement level(1m), lateral load capacity increases as the installation angle is increased. However, the value of the optimum installation angle decreases as the displacement level is increased. In fact, it is found to be $17.5^{\circ}$ at 6mm lateral displacement. The ratios of the lateral resistances for the optimum installation angles to those for the vertical RRP decrease as the lateral displacements are increased. Thus the effect of slant ins angle of RRP is expected to be reduced at higher level of lateral displacement.

  • Pile foundations that support offshore structures or transmission towers are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads due to wind and waves, causing permanent displacement which can severely affect stability of the structures. In this study, a series of cyclic lateral load tests were conducted on a pre-installed aluminum flexible pile in sandy soil with three different relative densities (40%, 70% and 90%) in order to evaluate the permanent displacement of a cyclic laterally loaded pile. Test results showed that the cyclic lateral loads accumulated the irreversible lateral displacement, so-called permanent displacement. As the number of cyclic lateral load increased, accumulated permanent displacement increased, but the permanent displacement due to one loading cycle gradually decreased. In addition, the permanent displacement of a pile increased with decrement of relative density and decreased by soil saturation. From the test results, the normalized permanent displacement defined as the cumulative permanent displacement to the initial permanent displacement ratio was investigated, and empirical equations for predicting the normalized permanent displacement was developed in terms of relative density of the soil and the number of cyclic lateral load.

  • In this study, experimental work has been carried out to investigate the effect of lateral soil movement on passive piles. This paper consists mainly of two parts: the first, performance of a series of laboratory experiments on a single pile and one-row pile groups, and the second, comparison between the measured and the predicted results. In the laboratory experiments, a quadrilateral soil movement profile was imposed on model piles embedded in both sandy soils and weathered soils. The maximum bending moment and pile deflection induced in passive piles were found to be highly dependent on pile stiffness, pile spacing, relative densities and pile head fixity condition. It was shown that the group effect might either increase or decrease the maximum bending moment and pile deflection, depending on the aforementioned influence factors. Based on the results obtained, a spacing-to-diameter ratio of 7.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect, and a pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile.

  • In order to investigation Lateral bearing capacity of bored-precast pile, we carried out the analysis of the relationship between Lateral load and horizontal displacement using the result of horizontal pile load test. The six piles injected cement milk of 50%, 70% and 100% of the embedded length of pile were used in the horizontal pile load test. The horizontal displacement, yielding load and horizontal bearing capacity are mainly affected by The injecting ratio of cement milk (injected length of cement milk/embedded length of pile). As the injecting ratio of cement milt is increased, the starting point of horizontal displacement in piles become close to the ground surface and the amount of horizontal displacement is decreased. Also, the horizontal bearing capacity and yielding load are highly increased with increasing the ration of cement milk. The horizontal bearing capacity and yielding load of bored pile with 1 of cement milk ratio are about two or three times those of pile with 0.5 of cement milk ratio.
