  • This paper presents a systematic approach for estimating material performance and designing mix proportion of concrete based on an application of Bayesian method in the form of satisfaction curves. The one-parameter satisfaction curve represents a satisfaction probability of a concrete performance criterion as a function of concrete material parameter. An analysis method to combine multiple satisfaction curves to form one unique satisfaction curve that can relate the performance of concrete to a single evaluating value called Goodness value is proposed. A proposed PBMD procedure and examples of application of the PBMD method for concrete mix proportion design are carried out to verify the validity of the proposed method. Finally, the comparison between the expected performance results of a concrete mix proportion designed using PBMD to the ACI estimation equation calculated results are performed to check the applicability of the method to actual construction.

  • Methods of enerating curves through a polygon are proposed. One is minimizing the sum of second order discontinuities of curve segments shile satisfying the first order continuities. The other is minimizint the energy consumption under the viscosity resistance while satisfying the first order continuities.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how a peer mentoring method affects students' problem solving abilities and class satisfaction in the context of high school quadratic curves and provide implications for teaching and learning mathematics. For this study, seventy six 11th graders in the natural sciences track participated in the peer mentoring method. After finishing the teaching method, Problem Solving Abilities Questionnaire was collected for analysis of pre-test/post-test experiments and Class Satisfaction Questionnaire was also gathered. The results show that the mentoring method positively impacts on participants' problem solving abilities and class satisfaction because its comfortable learning environments, individualized learning contents, and unconstrained learning processes motivate them through ways to improve their communication. According to the results, it is to address practical implications applied in teaching quadratic curves in high school with the value and importance of mentoring methods.

  • In this study, we propose a new three-node hybrid-mixed curved beam element with the relaxed-equiribrium stress functions for static analysis. The proposed element considering shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The stress functions are carefully chosen from three important considerations: (i) all the kinematic deformation modes must be suppressed, and (ii) the spurious constraints must be removed in the limiting behaviors via the field-consistency, and (iii) the relaxed equilibrium conditions could be incorporated because it might be impossible to select the stress functions and parameters to fully satisfy both the equiribrium conditions and the suppression of kinematic deformation modes in the three-node curved beam hybrid-mixed formulation. Numerical examples confirm the superior and stable behavior of the proposed element regardless of slenderness ratio and curvature. Besides, the proposed element shows the outstanding performance in predicting the stress resultant distributions.

  • Recently, Performance Based Design (PBD) method has been studied as a next generation structural design method, which enables a designed structure to satisfy the required performance during its service life. One method of deciding whether the required performance has been satisfied is Bayesian method, which has been commonly used in seismic analysis. Generally, it is presented as a conditional probability of exceeding some limit state (i.e., collapse) for a given ground motion. In PBD of concrete mixture design, the same methodology can be applied to assess concrete material performance based on some conditional parameters (i.e. strength, workability, carbonation, etc). In this paper, a detailed explanation of the procedure of drawing satisfaction curve by using Bayesian method based on various material parameters is shown. Also, a discussion of using the developed satisfaction curves for PBD for concrete mixture design is presented.

  • Arcs are usually treated as significant features in the field of pattern recognition. This paper presents a method to detect arcs from digital planar curves and estimate their arc centers and radii by using geometric analysis. The deviation of distance between the original curve and the detected arc by the proposed method does not exceed a tolerant error. The experimental results show that the proposed method is available for the detection of arcs iron not only smooth but also heavily noisy curves.

  • Superimposition of vertical and transition curves is not allowed for all types of tracks in Korean regulation of railway construction. However, this criterion has been established on the basis of difficulty of maintenance of the ballasted track. Comparing with the ballasted track, the concrete slab track has the advantage of maintenance and structural, which allows the superimposition of vertical and transition curves when it satisfies the criteria of running safety and riding comfort. In this study, running safety, ride comforts and track acting forces were analyzed and compared by numerical analysis using VAMPIRE program when the vertical and transition curves are superimposed for the ballasted track as well as the concrete slab track. From the analysis results, it was found that running safety, riding comforts and track acting forces in case of superimposition of vertical and transition curves for the both tracks meet all of the criteria. Therefore, although superimposition of vertical and transition curves for the ballasted track is not allowed because of a lot of maintenance works, it can be applied to the concrete slab track considering the advantage of maintenance and structural safety.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static behavior of a horizontally curved prestressed concrete (PSC) girder. A 30m long full-scale curved PSC girder with 80.0m radius is fabricated by a portable curved form system. Deflections and concrete strains at the middle of span were measured. The obtained experimental results have been compared to those from F.E.A. analysis. When a initial crack developed, the applied load was 1.3 times the service design load and the vertical deflection at the middle of span satisfied the requirement for a live load state according to the Korea Bridge Design Specifications (2010). Also, the ductility of the full scale specimen satisfied the limit in the Specifications (2010). To verify the experimental results, a numerical F.E. analysis was carried and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. The horizontally curved PSC girder fabricated on site was found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

  • This paper presents the hybrid curve approximation with geometric boundary conditions as position vector and tangent vector of start and end point using a B-spline approximation and a genetic algorithm First, H-spline approximation generates control points to fit B-spline curries through specified data points. Second, these control points are modified by genetic algorithm(with floating point representation) under geometric boundary conditions. This method would be able to execute the efficient design work without fairing.

  • In this paper, we study the special geometric reparametization of the (plane polynomial) Pythagorean Hodograph curves in the view point of their roots. The PH curves are completely determined by the roots of their hodographs. we show that the loci of roots of the PH curves satisfy some interesting geometric properties.
