  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.

  • Quenching effect depends upon coolingability of quenchant as well as the composition of steel. Study on the coolingability of quenchants is important in cooling process and heat treatment of steel. Experimental apparatus and measuring method follow Korean Industrial Standard. Distilled water, different concentration of NaCl, NaOH and Na$_{2}$CO$_{3}$ solutions were compared. Also the effect of temperature of distilled water were calculated. Experimental results were examined with F.E.M. analysis.

  • The droplet impact behavior is dominated by some parameters such as surface temperature, We number, surface and fluid property. Especially, Leidenfrost effect which prevents the contact between surface and droplet is very powerful phenomenon for determining droplet impact behavior. Due to this effect, the impact regime is divided into contact boiling regime and film boiling regime whether the droplet contact with the surface. Many studies have found that surface micro-structures which processed by surface processing are effective to overcome the Leidenfrost effect. In this study, droplet impact behaviors were compared using ethanol both on flat and laser-ablated Al surface. On the flat surface, impact regime was mainly divided by surface temperature. And there is key dominant parameter for each regime. On the laser-ablated surface, we could see changed impact regime and different impact behavior such as jetting and ejection of tiny droplets despite of same impact conditions.

  • Reactive Ion Etching(RIE) of Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ in a CF$_{4}$/O$_{2}$ gas plasma exhibits such good anisotropic etching properties that it is widely employed in current VLSI technology. However, the RIE process can cause serious damage to the silicon surface under the Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ layer. When an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposited(APCVD) SiO$_{2}$ layer is used as a etch-stop material for Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$, it seems inevitable to get a good etch selectivity of Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ with respect to SiO$_{2}$. Therefore, we have undertaken thorough study of the dependence of the etch rate of Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ plasmas on $O_{2}$ dilution, RF power, and chamber pressure. The etch selectivity of Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ with respect to SiO$_{2}$ has been obtained its value of 2.13 at the RF power of 150 W and the pressure of 110 mTorr in CF$_{4}$ gas plasma diluted with 25% $O_{2}$ by flow rate.

  • In this study, the minimum heat flux conditions are experimentally investigated for the spray cooling of hot plate. The hot plates are cooled down from the initial temperature of about $900^{\circ}C$, and the local heat flux and surface temperatures are calculated from the measured temperature-time history. The results show that the minimum heat flux point temperatures increase linearly resulting from the propagation of wetting front with the increase of the distance from the stagnation point of spray flow. However, in the wall region, the minimum heat flux point temperature becomes independent of the distance. Also, the experimental results show that the velocity of wetting front increases with the increase of the droplet flow rate.

  • The minimum heat flux conditions are experimentally investigated for the subcooled liquid film flow on the horizontal plate. The experimental results show that the minimum heat flux point temperature becomes higher with the increase of the velocity and the subcooling of the liquid film flow. However, the effect of distance from the leading edge of the heat transfer plate on the minimum heat flux is almost negligible. Also, the experimental results show that the propagation velocity of wetting front increase with increasing the velocity and the subcooling of the liquid film flow.

  • To predict the fuel clad temperature during the reflooding phase of a LOCA, one may need a knowledge of reflood heat tranfer mechanism in a rod bundle. For this purpose reflooding experiments have been carried out with an electrically heated 3*3 rod bundle. Using the method for the determination of local heat transfer coefficient from the measured wall temperature the parametric effects of coolant flow rate, initial wall temperature, coolant subcooling and heat generation rate on the propagation of rewetting front were investigated. Prediction of the wall temperature histories for these experiments was discussed using REFLUX code with modification of the rewetting temperature correlation. Through this modification, better agreement between experiment and prediction was obtained.

  • In this study a parametric analysis for the rewetting temperature was made with 572 data obtained from the single tube experiment. The rewetting temperature was also evaluated by measuring the vaporization time of a liquid drop on a hot surface at the elevated pressures. The results showed that the rewetting temperature increased with flooding rate, inlet subcooling pressure and initial wall temperature, and decreased with increasing axial elevation. Based on the results obtained, the rewetting temperature correlation was suggested. From the comparison of correlated rewetting temperatures with measured values, it showed that the correlated values fell within .+-.5% error from the measured values.
