We prepared heterogeneous ion exchange membranes (hetero-IEMs) for the application of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). Hetero-IEMs were fabricated by compressing the mixture of ion exchange resin powders and liner low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Characterization and MCDI desalination experiments were carried for the fabricated membranes. Electrical resistance of membrane decreased and water content increased with increasing the resin content in the hetero-IEMs. However, transport number indicating permselectivity of membrane was similar with that of commercial homogenesous ion exchange membrane. The results of MCDI desalination experiments showed that the adsorption amount for hetero-IEM was about 90% of that of homogeneous membrane due to the high electrical resistance of hetero-IEM. Although desalination performance of hetero-IEM decreased compared with homogeneous membrane, it was thought to be applicable to MCDI because of simple preparation and low price.
A membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell is constructed by applying thin layer of a cation exchange membrane (Nafion) on cathode and an anion exchange membrane (aminated polyphenylene oxide, APPO) on anode. Compared to CDI cell without CEM and AEM coating, MCDI exhibits enhanced salt removal efficiency. When Nafion and APPO are used as CEM and AEM, optimized salt removal performance as high as 82.1% is observed when 1.2 V is applied for 3 min during absorption process and -1.0 V is applied for 1 min during desorption.
In order to investigate the effect of ion exchange capacity of ion exchange membranes on the salt removal efficiency in the membrane capacitive deionization process, sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) as the cross linking agent was added to poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) and sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid (PSSA_MA) was put into PVA at different concentrations of 10, 50 and 90 wt% relative to PVA. As the content of PSSA_MA increased, the water content and ion exchange capacity increased and the salt removal efficiency was also increased in the membrane capacitive deionization process. The highest salt removal efficiency was 65.5% at 100 mg/L NaCl feed at a flow rate, 15 mL/min and adsorption, 1.4 V/5 min for PSSA_MA 90 wt%.
Crosslinking of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) anion exchange membranes, which can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI), was investigated. PPO Anion exchange polymer was prepared through bromination and amination reaction steps and crosslinked with bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The gelation time by crosslinking was short in the order of HMDA > m-PDA > BADGE. The anion exchange membranes crosslinked at room temperature over a certain amount of crosslinking agent did not dissolve in an aprotic solvent such as 1-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and the chemical durability of their membranes to organic solvent increased. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake of anion exchange membranes crosslinked with different crosslinker (BADGE) contents were measured and compared. The CDI performance of the crosslinked PPO anion exchange membrane immersed in the HMDA solution was almost the same as that of the non - crosslinked membrane except for the initial stage of the adsorption step.
In this study, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as cation exchange membrane and blended and crosslinked poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membrane as anion exchange membrane were used and then the performance experiments of the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) installed with both membranes were carried out. The newly prepared anion exchange membrane were characterized through water content, ion exchange capacity and FT-IR. The crosslinking time of 3 h to 5 h indicated that the salt removal was reduced from 81.3, 65.7% to 53.8%. The effect of PVAm contents from 40, 60, to 80% on the salt removal was shown 81.3, 75.2 and 37.7%, respectively. As a result, it was concluded that the crosslinking time and the content of PVAm had an influence on the salt removal efficiency.
The effects of scale formation of hardness material caused by electrode reactions on the desalination performance of the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were investigated. During the repeated adsorption and desorption process for the influent containing $Ca^{2+}$ ion, changes in effluent concentration and cell potential with respect to the number of adsorption were analyzed. It was found that $OH^-$ generation at the cathode was initiated at about 0.8 V or more of cell potential. In addition, the scale of $Ca(OH)_2$ was formed on the surface of cathode carbon electrode by combining adsorbed $Ca^{2+}$ ions and $OH^-$ ions generated from electrode reaction. As the scale was forming, the electrical resistance of carbon electrode was increasing, which resulted in the decrease of the adsorption amount. In the case of the operation at 1.5 V cell potential, the adsorption was reduced to 58% of the initial adsorption amount due to the scale formation.
Possibility of the selective removal of $Ca^{2+}$ ions from a mixed solution of $Na^{+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ions using membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) was investigated. Adsorption equilibrium experiments were conducted to determine the selectivity of the CMX cation-exchange membrane toward $Ca^{2+}$ ions. In addition, desalination experiments for a mixed solution (5 meq/L NaCl + 2 meq/L $CaCl_{2}$) were performed using an MCDI cell. The adsorption equilibrium of CMX membrane showed that the equivalent fraction of $Ca^{2+}$ ions in the solution and the CMX membrane were 28.6 and 87.2%, respectively, which indicates the CMX membrane's high selectivity toward $Ca^{2+}$ ions. Desalination experiments were performed by applying a constant current to the MCDI cell until the cell potential reached 1.0 V. The amount of ions adsorbed did not significantly change as the applied current was changed. However, the equivalent fractions of $Ca^{2+}$ ions among the adsorbed ions were inversely proportional to the applied currents: 81.4, 78.4, 77.0, and 74.5% at 200, 300, 500, and $700\;A/m^{2}$ of applied current density, respectively. This result is attributed to the increased fraction of $Ca^{2+}$ ions adsorbed by the CMX membrane at lower applied current densities.
In this study, the heterogeneous ion exchange membranes prepared by the combination of the carbon electrode and mixed the cation and anion exchange polymers and polyvinylidene fluoride as the basic polymer together were made to recognize the efficiency of the salt removal for the application of the membrane capacitive deionization process. The mixing weight ratio of the solvent, basic polymer and ion exchange resin was 7 : 2 : 1 and this mixed solution was directly cast on the electrode. As for the operating conditions of the adsorption voltage and time, feed flow rate, desorption voltage and time of the feed solution NaCl 100 mg/L, the salt removal efficiencies (SRE) were measured. Apart from this NaCl, the $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ solutions were investigated in terms of SRE as well. Typically, SRE for NaCl 100 mg/L solution under the conditions of adsorption voltage/time, 1.5 V/3 min, desorption voltage/time -0.1 V/3 min, was shown 98%. And for the $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ solutions, the SREs of 70 and 59% were measured under the conditions of adsorption voltage/time, 1.2 V/3 min, desorption voltage/time -0.5 V/5 min, respectively.

An effective capacitive deionization process termed membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is newly designed and experimentally tested for seawater desalination. By preventing co-ions to be expelled, MCDI can improve the ion removal performance, but there is a trade-off between blocking co-ion transfer and increasing contact resistance. The conventional MCDI uses 2D-shaped films which increase contact resistance and reduce desalination performance in the trade-off. In this paper, with the 3-D shape of Nafion coated activated carbon cloth, the mentioned problems are expected to be solved making the desalination performance better. We visualized ion concentration and fluid flows with half-MCDI cell that can measure only efficiency of cathode. We found the optimal number of coatings which have the better efficiency than CMX, commercial cation exchange membrane in fixed current conditions of 100uA.
