This study was designed to find out the effects of cropping patterns on the changes of soil physico-chemical properties. Soil properties and crop growth were studied under the four cropping patterns, such as rice monoculture, green garlic-rice, manure rye-rice and radish-rice. The results are summurized as followings ; 1. Soil physical properties were affected by different pre-crop cultivations and its residual effects were continued for 60-70 days after rice transplanting 2. Soil air permeabilities at harvesting time of pre-crops were high in order of manure rye>green garlic>radish, and water permeabilities during rice cultivation were similar to previous order. 3. Chemical properties of soil were affected by the different fertilizer level of pre-crops and their residual effects were continued to rice harvesting time. The ratio of nutrient uptake to $N-P_2O_5-K_2O $ based on amount of application were in the order of manure rye-rice>radish-rice>rice monoculture>green garlic-rice plot. Fertilizer application after pre-crops cultivation must be considered. 4. Rice root distribution of manure rye-rice plot was higher than that of other cropping patterns at subsoil. However, rice root distribution at green garlic-rice plot and radish-rice plot was high at topsoil which had much residual nutrient from pre-crops. 5. Rice yield after pre-crops was high in order of green garlic-rice>radish-rice> rice monoculture>manure rye-rice.
Mechanical characteristics of flower stalks (scapes) of garlic such as shear forces, cutting forces, and modulus of elasticities were investigated as a preliminary research to develop a mechanical harvester of garlic bulbils. The average shear forces of garlic scapes was 0.642 N and the maximum and minimum shear forces were 1.42 and 0.25 N, respectively. The shear forces generally increased as the diameter of garlic scapes increased. There was no correlation between the modulus of elasticity and the diameter of garlic scapes and the average modulus of elasticity of garlic scapes was around $2.40\times10^7\;N/m^2$ There was also no correlation between the cutting force and the diameter of garlic scapes. As the downward speed of blade increased, the cutting force of garlic scapes decreased and reversed to increase. The cutting forces of the lower part garlic scapes were lower than those of the upper part. The range of cutting forces of the lower and the upper part of garlic scapes were 3.88-4.04 N and 4.29-4.93 N, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigate optimal temperature of garlic and develop bulb weight model in harvest time. Day and night temperature in chambers was set to $11/7^{\circ}C$, $14/10^{\circ}C$, $17/12^{\circ}C$, $20/15^{\circ}C$, $23/18^{\circ}C$, $28/23^{\circ}C$(16/8h). Bulb fresh and dry weight was heaviest on $20/15^{\circ}C$. In $11/7^{\circ}C$ and $14/10^{\circ}C$, leaf number and total leaf area increased slowly. But in the harvest, leaf number and total leaf area were not significant, except $28/23^{\circ}C$. Models were developed with fresh bulb weight. As a result of analyzing the model, $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ certified optimal mean temperature. And the growing degree day base temperature estimated $7.1^{\circ}C$, upper temperature threshold estimated $31.7^{\circ}C$. To verify the model, mean temperature on temperature gradient tunnel applied to the growth rate model. Lineal function model, quadric model, and logistic distribution model showed 79.0~95.0%, 77.2~92.3% and 85.0~95.8% accuracy, respectively. Logistic distribution model has the highest accuracy and good for explaining moderate temperature, growing degree day base temperature and upper temperature threshold.
The objective of this study was to find out the most optimal bulbil size and planting densities of garlic bulbils to germination for production of leaf garlic. In the first this experiment, the bulbils classified by the size of bulbil to Big (>0.2) and Small (${\leq}0.2$), were planted at $13,680bulbils/m^2$ and $18,240bulbils/m^2$ (Big), $18,240bulbils/m^2$ and $22,800bulbils/m^2$ (Small), respectively. The germination rate, plant height and total yield were measured. In the second experiment, length, width, fresh weight and dry weight of 200 garlic bulbils were measured to analyze the correlation of days to first germination, T50 and germination rate. In the first experiment, the germination rate showed the highest at Big bulbils. The density of $18,240bulbils/m^2$ was the most suitable for cultivation because of the highest germination rate. In the case of yield, it was found that both of the fresh weight and the dry weight of Big bulbil was 2.8 times heavier than Small bulbil. Therefore, Big bulbil with the density of $18,240bulbils/m^2$ was the most suitable for cultivation because of the highest yield. The correlation between each factor of morphological characteristics had a positive correlation between fresh weight, dry weight and width. Also, the germination rate had a positive correlation with fresh weight and width. And, days to first germination and T50 had a negative correlation with fresh weight and width. In conclusion, the optimal planting density is $18,240bulbils/m^2$ and the optimal size of bulbil was 0.2g or more. However, thicker and heavier bulbils could lead to higher and faster germination.

In Korea, the mechanization ratio of field farming is about 58.3%. Especially, mechanization ratio of harvest operation is 10% or less. So, it is required to improve the mechanization ratio of harvest operation to analyze the power requirement analysis of agricultural tractor. The purpose of this study is to analyze power requirement of the underground crop harvester attached on agricultural tractor for traction operation. First, a power measurement system was developed and installed in 45 kW agricultural tractor. Second, field experiments were conducted at two driving speed levels (1.41, 2.17 km/h), and axle torque and rotation speed were analyzed. At 1.41km/h driving speed, the average power requirement of driving axle is 3.13 kW, respectively, at 2.17km/h driving speed, the average power requirement of driving axle is each 4.20 kW. In addition, the field tests show that as the driving speed increases by 53%, the power requirement of the underground crop harvester attached on agricultural tractor increases by 34%. Therefore, it indicated that the power requirement of agricultural tractor was affected by the driving speed.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of combination of air temperature and soil water contents on growth, physiological disorder rate, and yield of garlic. This experiments has been carried out in the typical plastic house (one side open and other side installed ventilation fans) which was maintained gradient air temperature (maximum different value of air temperature : $6^{\circ}C$). The excessive irrigation (EI) set at $0.34m^3/m^3$ soil moisture contents. The significant differences found in the growth parameters of garlics as affected by air temperature and soil moisture conditions. The plant height of garlic with combination of ambient $(A)+6^{\circ}C$ and optimal irrigation (OI; set at $0.22m^3/m^3$ soil moisture contents) treatments represented 47.4 cm/plant, which was the highest among all the tested treatments. The leaf length and width showed the greatest, which were 16.1 and 2.4 cm/plant, respectively, in $A+6^{\circ}C-OI$. The physiological disorder ratio was higher as 12.9% at $A+6^{\circ}C-OI$ and was not occurred at ambient temperature with EI compared with OI treatment. The bulb and clove weight were dramatically decreased at $A+6^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment. The yields were decreased by 51% in OI at $A+6^{\circ}C$ and $A+3^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment. Those results indicated that yields were decreased and ratio of physiological disorders was increased by high temperature treatments.
This study was conducted to investigate the control possibility of garlic white rot causing severe yield losses of Allium species and cultivars using cultural practices such as optimal sowing date and burial depth, and lime application. Inoculum density in infested field soil was investigated at different soil depth, and that on the diseased plant debris was done. Inoculum density and recovery ratio of white rot pathogen of garlic was highly different between two species of Sclerotium cepivorum forming comparatively small sclerotia and Sclerotium sp. forming comparatively large ones. It was confirmed that S. cepivorum formed more sclerotia on bulbs of garlic than S. sp., and sclerotial recovery of S. cepivorum was higher than that of S. sp. Inoculum density of white rot pathogen in the infested field at garlic seeding period ranged from one to thirteen sclerotia per 30 g soil. Inoculum density of white rot pathogen decreased remarkably with increasing soil depth and above 95% of sclerotia were distributed within 5 cm of soil depth. Disease severity of white rot was higher on slightly planted garlics than deeply-planted ones. Garlic seed bulbs infected by white rot pathogens were confirmed to be one of main inoculum sources of white rot in the field and the disease incidences caused by garlic seed transmission showed big differences among garlic varieties. When nine garlic varieties harvested from infested plots were sown in the field, highly susceptible varieties, ‘Wando’, ‘Daeseo’, ‘Namdo’ and ‘Kodang’ showed high disease incidences, whereas other five varieties were not infected at all. It was confirmed that white rot occurred higher on early-sown garlics, before middle October, than on late-sown ones, after late October. Meanwhile, increasing application rate of lime ranged from 100 to 300 g reduced disease severity of white rot.

Farming using natural salts for supply of nutrients to crops is increasing recently. It is necessary to evaluate the salt accumulation in soil and the effects on crop growth by treatment of natural salt. This study was conducted at the organic cultivation fields which garlics were planted. The treatments were no natural salts (control) and plots applied 100~600 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ with natural salts. Soil samples were taken from the 0 to 25 cm depth at 12 and 107 day (harvest time) after natural salts application. The results showed that electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Exch.$-Na^+$) and Cl- were increased by application of natural salts. But, pH and exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) had not significantly differences among treatments. In 300 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ plots of natural salt, the level of EC, Exch.$-Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ in top soil (0-5 cm) was were increased more 0.3, 3.7, and 12.7 times than control plot, respectively. EC, Exch.$-Na^+$, and $Cl^-$ were highest in the top 5 cm of soil and decreased with depth at 12 days after natural salts application, but were decreased in the plower layer (0-15cm) at the harvest time because they were leached with natural rain. An increasing the application level of natural salt resulted in increasing of sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, and percentage of soil dispersion. The concentration of nutrient uptake such as total nitrogen (T-N), chloride (Cl) in garlic had significant difference between control and plots applied with natural salts The content of T-N of garlic in plots with natural salt application was lower than control plot, but Cl is higher than control plot.
The major objectives of this study were to find out the growth and yield of two ecotypes of Korean garlic in main garlic producing districts in Korea. The data were collected by the field survey which had been conducted at 270 township in 58 major garlic production countries throughout the country on 10th, 20th, and 30th day of every month from 1982 to 1984. The results of this study were as follow: 1) Sowing period of garlic of southern and northern ecotype were around September 20 and October 20, respectively. 2) Average number of plants per $3.3m^2$ of the southern and northern ecotype were 123 and 100, respectively. 3) Leaf emergence time of southern ecotype was before the beginning of winter (November) and that of northern ecotype was from early February till April. 4) Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the plant heights measured on November 30 for southern ecotype and on June 30 for northern ecotype most adequately predicted the yield of garlic. The relationship between yield and plant height were as follows: Southern ecotype; Y=571.56+5.34X Northern ecotype; Y=251.81+5.45X where Y is yield expressed in Kg/l0a and X is height in cm at the respective date. 5) The number of leaves increased until harvest in both ecotypes. At harvest, the number of leaves in southern and northern ecotype were 10 and 8, respectively. Number of leaves counted on January 20 for southern ecotype and on June 20 for northern ecotype correlated best with the yield of the ecotypes. 6) The highest senescent portion of southern ecotype and northern ecotype were seen on January 30 and May 30, respectively. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the senescent portion of southern ecotype counted on January 30 and that of northern ecotype on June 20 mostly affected the yield. 7) Average yield of southern and northern ecotype at the main garlic producing districts were 771 and 652Kg/10a, respectively.
