  • This paper analyzes transmissiondelays of a message and a packet in a time-varying and packet-based radio link. The paper assumes that thearrivals of messages have a Bernoulli process and the lengths of the messages a exponential distribution. To reflect the feature of the time-varying radio link, we use a two-state Markov model. From the model the mean transmission delay of and the mean queue length of the packet are analyzed in terms of the packet distribution function, the packet transmission service time, and the PER of the radio link. And the mean message transmission delay time and the mean queue length are derived using the performance indices of the packet. Numerical results show that the message arrival rate and the message length have some bounds to keep the transmission of the message steady and to improve the performance indices of the message. It can be known that the PER of the state influences on the performance indices more than the sojourn time of the state.

  • New optical transmission links technique for compensating of the distorted wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signals due to group velocity dispersion (GVD) and self phase modulation (SPM) in single mode fiber (SMF) are proposed. The proposed optical links have optical phase conjugator (OPC) placed at nearby WDM transmitter or receiver and repeater spans with artificial distribution of SMF length and residual dispersion per span (RDPS). It is confirmed that optimal link configuration expanding effective launching power range and effective net residual dispersion (NRD) by improving system performance is that having OPC closely placed at WDM receiver and the gradually descended distribution of SMF length and RDPS of each repeater spans, related with the gradually increased optical link length. And, it is also confirmed that NRD is controlled by postcompensation in optimal optical link with OPC closely placed at WDM receiver.

  • In this paper, we proposed a Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) to search the optimal link lengths for legged walking robot. In order to apply the PSO algorithm for the proposed, its walking robot kinematic analysis is needed. A crab robot based on four-bar linkage mechanism and Jansen mechanism is implemented in H/W. For the performance index of PSO, the stride length of the legged walking robot is defined, based on the propose kinematic analysis. Comparative simulation results present to illustrate the viability and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Optical phase conjugation combining with dispersion management (DM) is promising technique to compensate for signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effects of single mode fiber (SMF) in optical communication systems. However the fixed SMF length in every fiber spans usually used in the optical links with optical phase conjugator(OPC) and DM restricts the flexible link configuration. The goal of this paper is to investigate the possibility of the flexible configurations of the ultra-high and long-haul optical transmission systems by using the random distribution of SMF length of each fiber spans consisted of the optical link. It is confirmed that the excellent compensation for the distorted wavelength division multiplexing signals in the optical links with the randomly distribution is obtained in case of the shorter averaged SMF length over all fiber spans. It is also confirmed that the control method of net residual dispersion suitable to good compensation is postcompensation and the extent of net residual dispersion(NRD) is -10 ps/nm in DM optical link consisted of fiber spans with the randomly distributed SMF lengths.

  • The length of optical fiber in dispersion-managed link combined with optical phase conjugation to compensate for signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effect is a major factor determining the compensation effectiveness. The dispersion-managed link consists of several fiber spans in which standard single mode fiber and dispersion compensating fiber are arranged. In this paper, the compensation effect in the link that changes residual dispersion per span only by adjusting the length of one type of optical fiber, which is different in the first half link and the second half link with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC), has been investigated. It was confirmed that the best compensation for 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed signal could be obtained in the dispersion-managed link, in which the cumulative dispersion profile is symmetric around the OPC, and the cumulative dispersion amount is all positive in the first half, and all the cumulative dispersion amount is distributed negatively in the second half.

  • In wireless communications environments, a link adaptation technique that selects the proper rate from among several transmission rates is adopted to cope with variations in channel status. In block coded modulation, the frame time and/or the block length can be adjusted to the channel status. A smaller frame time can cause inter-frame interference (IFI), however, a larger frame time can reduce the data rate. Therefore, frame time is the design factor decided by a tradeoff between performance and the data rate. This paper presents a method to determine the frame time based on the processing gain for the channel model, CM1~CM4, recommended by IEEE 802.15a. Also, a link adaptation technique for block coded modulation is proposed for efficient communications by varying the frame time and the block length. Through simulation, link adaptation can be carried out with a step size of 2~5 nsec in a frame time range of 14~ 50 nsec for channel models CM1~CM4.

  • Dispersion management (DM) is the typical technique compensating for the distorted signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects for transmitting wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channel with the excellent performance. Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with random distribution and artificial distribution of single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) required to flexibly design of optical links in DM. It is confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) are +10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm controlled by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively, in both of the considered distribution patterns of SMF length and RDPS. And, in optimal NRD, system performance in optical links with the descending distribution of SMF length and the ascending distribution of RDPS among the artificial distribution patterns are more improved, consequently, effective launching power range is expanded by almost 2 dB than those in optical links with the uniform distribution.

  • In high capacity and long haul optical communication systems, signal distortion is induced by chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects of optical fibers. Dispersion management (DM) combining with mid-spans spectral inversion (MSSI) is one of the various techniques for overcoming this drawback. The most simple configuration of DM link is obtained by uniformly distributing the lengths of single mode fiber (SMF) and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) over whole fiber spans consisted of optical link. In this paper, the system performances in the uniformly distributed DM link combined with MSSI are assessed as a function of the number of fiber spans, because the system performances in this configuration are used as the significant performance criterion in other link configurations, such as the artificial distribution or the random distribution of SMF lengths and RDPS.

  • For transmitting the ultra-high speed optical signals with better performance, the techniques to suppress or mitigate the signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and optical Kerr effects are required. Dispersion management (DM), optical phase conjugation, and the combination of these two are promising techniques to compensate for the signal distortion. However, the fixed length of single mode fiber (SMF) and the fixed residual dispersion per span (RDPS) usually used in these optical links restricts flexible link configuration. The goal of this paper is to investigate the possibility of the flexible configurations of the ultra-high and long-haul optical transmission systems by using the artificial and the random distribution of SMF length and RDPS of each fiber spans consisted of the optical link. It is confirmed that the proposed link configurations should be one of the methods suitable for implementing the flexible optical transmission systems, however which depend on other link parameters, such as the averaged RDPS, and the launch power.
