  • Phyto-sociological methods were used in this study to assess the vegetation structure of a forest stand at Mt. Goehwa in Sejong-Si with the aim of providing vegetation information for urban forest utilization and management plans. The actual forest vegetation was classified into two types of community groups (Quercus serrata-Lindera obtusiloba and Coreopsis lanceolata community groups) at the highest hierarchical level. The Q. serrata-L. obtusiloba community group was classified into six units, which included artificial forest and natural forest vegetation. Artificial forests were classified into three communities (Pinus rigida, Castanea crenata, and Robinia pseudoacacia), whereas natural forests were classified into three communities (Quercus variabilis, Quercus acutissimaa, and Pinus densiflora). The Coreopsis lanceolata community group, which exhibited vegetative characteristics of urban forest edge areas, was categorized into four units. The urban forest edges were classified into four communities (Indigofera bungeana, Lespedeza bicolor, Amorpha fruticosa, and Lespedeza cuneata). Accordingly, the vegetation structure of Mt. Goehwa was categorized into 10 vegetation unit systems. An importance value analysis showed the highest importance value for C. crenata at 6.7%, followed by P. rigida at 6.4%, and R. pseudoacacia at 6.3%, indicating that the ecological impact of plantation species can be significant on Mt. Goehwa. A community coefficient of similarity analysis revealed that the artificial and natural forests had similar species compositions; however, both forests differed from the urban forest edge. This variation was further confirmed by Detrended correspondence analysis(DCA), with similar results. Canonical correspondence analysis(CCA) showed that the artificial forest and natural forest community types were positively correlated with altitude, bare rock, and the present species. By contrast, the urban forest edge community types were negatively correlated with these factors.

  • The cultured stain fungus isolated firstly from discolored wood of Pinus rigida was inoculated on wood blocks to investigate the invading pathway of the fungus. The inoculated fungus rapidly colonized in the ray parenchyma and moved radially along them. In process of time the fungus penetrated tracheids where it started to move into vertical direction. After 90 days the fungus colonized all over the wood tissue, therefore some cell lumens were filled with full of hyphae. In addition methanol extracts did not affect the invading pathway of the stain fungus.

  • This study was performed to understand the changes in wood extractives, mainly acetone extracts, in pine woods (Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida) treated by three blue stain fungi (BSF) such as native BSF in Korea, Leptographium sp., screened Albino strain (BSFcs-1) and commercial Cartapip. BSF treatment has significantly reduced acetone extracts, 25.1~30.4% decreasing in red pine and 22.9~28.1% in pitch pine. The decreasing rates of fatty acids and sterols in woods were 10.6~11.2% by 3 week aging and 36~41.1% by BSF treatments, respectively. Triglycerides were also decreased to 5.68~9.4% by 3 week aging and 38.5~40.0% by BSF treatments, respectively. Resin acids were 6.1~11.3% by 3 week aging and 36~41.5% by BSF treatments, respectively. There were not so significant differences in extracts among native BSF and Albino-type strains (Albino strain, BSFcs-1, and commercial Cartapip). It was known that the Albino strain (BSFcs-1) screened for the biocontrol of wood discoloration has effectively decreased acetone extractives in pine woods.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of pressing time and spreading amount, moisture content, gap-distance with butt to butt joint and adhesives on bonding strength in manufacturing the laminated wood with Pitch pine (Pinus rigida). The results obtained were as follows: 1) The pressing time of 12 hours, 10 kilogram per square centimeter of pressure and 200 gram per square meter of spreading amount were required to reach over 50 kilogram per square centimeter (block shear strength) in manufacturing the laminated wood by aqueous vinyl urethane adhesive. 2) The bonding strength decreased with the increase of moisture content of wood. The block shear strength, however, showed over 100 kilogram per square centimeter when the strength test was carried out after air-drying the laminated wood in high moisture content (30-70%). 3) Regardless of direction of load, every flexural property decreased with the increase of gap-distance with butt to butt joint. However, little of every flexural property was changed at 0.5 millimeter of joint-gap distance. The flexural property of vertically laminated wood (perpendicular to glue line to load direction: 1) showed more than that of horizontally laminated wood (parallel to glue line to load direction: //). 4) Among five adhesives used at this experiment, the bonding strength of aqueous vinyl urethane adhesive was the highest in dry bond and wet tests.

  • This study was conducted to examine the uncertainty analysis of the stem density and biomass expansion factor for Pinus rigida in Korea. A total of 57 representative sample trees were harvested. The age class in Pinus rigida forests was divided into two, which were stands with less than 20 years and more than 21 years. The influence of stand ages on biomass expansion factor showed that it was statistically significant (p=0.0001), but it was not significant on stem density (p=0.8070). The results of this study based on the uncertainty evaluation method which were suggested by IPCC guide line indicated that stem density of the stand with less than 20 years were 30.92%, while were 25.12% the stands with more than 21years. The uncertainty in biomass expansion factor of less than 20 years and more than 21 years were 60.32% and 22.42%, respectively. The uncertainty of less than 20 years was higher compared to those stands with more than 21 years. In the case of old stand, it showed the lowest uncertainty results but younger stands showed the highest uncertainty results. This study could be applied to our country's emission factor by using stem density and biomass expansion factors which were less than 20 years and more than 21 years for Pinus rigida in Korea.

  • Larvae of Monochamus saltuarius showed normal growth and development on conifers of Pinus koraiensis, P. densiflora, Abies holophylla, Larix leptolepsis, P. bungeana, and P. rigida, respectively, but the conifers influenced significantly the body weight and the survival rate of larvae. Though the larval body weights were in a wide spectrum among treatments, growth curves of them were very similar from each other, showing continuous increase from the early larval stage to about 3 months old. The body weight was decreased slightly after the feeding period of the early 3 months. The size of larvae and adults became the largest from P. bungeana fed larvae. The mid-sized ones were from P. koraiensis, P. densiflora and A. holophylla. Small ones came from L. leptolepsis and P. rigida. The larval growth was retarded without water supply. Overall survival rates from the early stage of a larva to a fertile adult were 53.6% from P. koraiensis; 51.8%, P. densiflora; 34.7%, A. holophylla; 17.8%, P. bungeana; 16.7%, L. leptolepsis; and 12.3%, P. rigida. Adults from larvae fed the 6 species of conifers, respectively, were grown into the reproductively potent adults, which laid viable eggs. A few of overwintered larvae did not pupate and remained still as a larva until the late October of the year. Data from the field survey, the head width emerged from P. koraiensis was larger than that of L. leptolepsis. The adult emergence hole in P. koraiensis was larger also. While, the size of the emergence hole was larger in the artificially innoculated log of P. koraiensis, which was kept for a larva to be with a minimized food competition and sufficient water supply, than that of the field.
