Statistical Analysis for Thickness and Surface Roughness of Printed Pattern in Roll-to-Roll Printed Electronics System (롤투롤 인쇄전자 시스템에서 인쇄패턴의 두께와 표면조도에 관한 통계적 분석)

  • The roll-to-roll (R2R) printed electronics system is one of the most promising technologies for the printed electronics industry because of several advantages in terms of productivity and cost. In the R2R printed electronics system, the characteristics of the printed patterns are an important issue that determines the functional quality of the printed matter. This study analyzed how several main factors may affect the characteristics of printed patterns, especially the thickness and surface roughness. The statistical model for estimation of the printed pattern was developed as a function of the main factors using the design of experiment (DOE) methodology. Based on the statistical analysis results, the R2R printed electronics system can be designed to control the characteristics of printed patterns.

  • Currently, active research is being performed on printing of electronic devices such as RFID devices, flexible displays, solar cells, and e-paper. This technique has several advantages over existing technologies such as lithography and etching. In particular, RFID devices, flexible displays, solar cells, and e-paper require flexibility and a mass production system. Thus, attention is being focused on the roll-to-roll process. High quality should be guaranteed in the roll-to-roll printed electronics systems, and good thickness and roughness qualities must be ensured. Experimental design was applied to this problem to analyze the main effects and interaction effects of various factors. Matching technology between the nip roll characteristics and the quality of the print pattern in roll-to-roll printed electronics systems was proposed to improve the printing quality.

롤투롤 스퍼터를 이용하여 성장시킨 정전용량 방식의 터치 패널용 ITO 투명 전극 특성 연구

  • 본 연구에서는 저가격, 대면적화를 위한 롤투롤 스퍼터를 이용하여, Index matching (히가시 야마 $125{\mu}m$)의 PET 기판 위에 ITO 박막을 성막 시킨 정전용량 방식의 터치 패널용 투명 전극에 대하여 전기적, 광학적, 구조적, 표면적 특성을 분석하였다. ITO 타겟은 미쓰이사(일본의) 주석 함량 5 wt%을 사용하였으며, 롤투롤 스퍼터는 degassing챔버와 스퍼터 챔버가 한 시스템에 구성되었고, Degassing 챔버는 좌우측의 Rewinder/Unwinder 롤러에 의해 감고 풀어지는 PET 기판의 수분 및 가스를 중앙부에 위치한 히터를 통해 제거하며, 수분 제거 후 스퍼터 챔버로 옮겨진 1,250 mm폭의 PET기판을 Unwinder/Rewinder 롤러에 장착하며, Unwinder 롤러로부터 풀려진 PET 기판은 guide 롤러를 거쳐 cooling drum과의 물리적 접촉에 의해 PET 기판의 냉각이 일어나게 된다. ITO 캐소드 전에 장착된 할로겐 히터 상부로 기판이 지나가면서 열처리가 진행되고 열처리 후 두 개의 ITO 캐소드 상부를 지나면서 연속적으로 ITO 박막이 PET 기판에 성막 되게 된다. ITO 박막의 주요 성막 변수인 DC Power, Ar/$O_2$ 가스 유량비, 기판의 속도는 최적으로 고정하고, 성막된 ITO박막의 필름을 각각 고온 챔버에서 $150^{\circ}C$도에서 10 min에서 60 min 동안 각각 열처리를 통한 내열성 테스트를 진행하여 ITO 필름의 특성 향상을 비교 분석하였다. 분석을 위해 전기적 특성은 four-point probe로 측정했고, 투과도는 Nippon Denshoku사(社)의 COH-300A를 이용해 가시광(550 nm)에서 분석했고, FE-SEM으로 ITO박막의 표면 상태를 분석하였다. 또한 Rolling Tester (Z-300)를 이용하여 기계적 안정성을 분석하였다.

  • Printed electronics is a technology used for forming electronic circuits or devices, and it is used in the manufacture of many products such as RFID tags, solar cells, and flexible display panels with a much lower cost than in the case of semiconductor process technology. Web-guide-type printing such as roll-to-roll printing is a method used to produce printed electronic devices in a large volume. To commercialize such products, highly precise alignment between printed layers is required. In this study, a highly precise alignment system is proposed, and some experimental results are compared with those obtained using a laser surface vibrometer to illustrate the reliability of the proposed system. The robustness of the proposed system to web deformation is also considered experimentally.

  • Winding is an integral operation in almost every roll-to-roll continuous process and center-winding is suitable and general scheme in the winding system. However, the internal stresses within center-wound rolls can cause damage such as buckling, spoking, cinching, etc. It is therefore necessary to analyze the relationship between taper tension in winding section and internal stress distribution within center-wound roll to prevent the winding failure. In this study, an optimal taper tension control method with parabolic taper tension profile for producing high quality wound roll was developed. The new logic was designed from analyzing the winding mechanism by using the stress model in center-wound rolls. The performance of the proposed taper tension profile was verified experimentally.

  • Printed electronics is a technology that produces electronic devices and circuits by printing functional ink on a web, which is a film-like flexible material. This technology is suitable for large-scale and high-speed mass production, and is a next-generation process technology that can fabricate electronic devices from flexible materials. As precise measurement of the positions of the web is required in order to commercialize such a printed electronics process, a measurement system with an optical encoder with a precision of micrometers had been proposed in the preceding research of this study. However, the lateral positions of the web could not be measured in the preceding research as the phenomenon of the entire web being moved in the lateral direction could not be detected. In this study, a measurement system that utilizes the differences in the amount of light reflected from the alignment patterns depending on the web positions in the lateral direction was proposed for measuring the lateral positions of the web. In addition, its reliability was verified and then the effect when measuring printed alignment patterns was analyzed by experiments.

  • A roll-to-roll (R2R) continuous manufacturing system for a carbon-nanotube (CNT)-/silver-nanowire (AgNW)- based large-area transparent conductive film was introduced in this study. The systemic guidelines of the R2R slot-die coating process including roll eccentricity, wrap angle, pump accuracy, and blower influence were discussed. To simulate the coating phenomenon, we investigated the governing parameters of the coating process by incorporating the estimated relative thickness that was defined by combining the viscocapillary model and volume model. By using experimental and mathematical approaches, an excellent transparent conductive layer with a $40{\Omega}/{\Box}$ sheet resistance and 88 % transmittance was obtained; moreover, a dimensionless number identifies the correlation between the transparent conductive film and the anti-reflection film.

  • In this paper, distributed tension observer for R2R process is proposed. The minimal order observer theory is utilized to design the distributed tension observer. The proposed method estimates the tension of a specific sub-process based on the speed and tension information from its adjacent sub-processes. Utilizing its properties, the proposed method can be applied to decentralized control structure. In order to achieve high estimation accuracy, sliding mode technique is also adopted to the proposed method.
