  • Nozzle flow analyses of $30\;ton_f$-class KARI liquid rocket engine for high altitude propulsion are carried out using a chemically frozen and equilibrium flow analysis code developed previously. It is considered that the combined frozen- and shifting- equilibrium analysis is cost-effective regarding the convergence characteristics and modeling uncertainties, though the non-equilibrium analysis is most reliable approach. A dependable performance prediction could be attainable through the present analyses that account for the recombination process and thermal and kinetic energy recovery during the expansion process with viscous effects.

  • In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.

  • In this paper, a numerical study has been performed to analyze flow characteristics of rocket propulsion. Through the ground spin test, combustion chamber pressure was measured. Based on the experimental results, numerical analysis was conducted under various nozzle pressure ratio conditions such as standard, operating and base pressure conditions. And it was compared with quasi-1D solution and experimental result. In addition, the difference in thrust characteristics according to the spin/non-spin of the flow conditions was confirmed at the same nozzle pressure ratio.

  • In the solid rocket motor (SRM), a thrust of rocket is generated by a nozzle so it is very important device. The nozzle of SRM is a condition of high temperature and high pressure so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. The liquid rocket propulsion systems (LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. This paper deal with the development of the oxy-acetylene torch tester and investigate the thermochemical erosion properties for the thermal insulation materials of the graphite rocket nozzle throat through the experiment. The results of experiments are compared with the results of Theoretical model and identify the key factors affecting of erosion. The results is in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The thermal response of carbon/phenolic used in a solid rocket nozzle liner was analyzed. In this paper, the numerical analysis of the thermal response of carbon/phenolic consists of (1) the integration equation of the boundary layer to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient of the combustion gas on the rocket nozzle wall and (2) 1-D finite difference method for heat conduction of carbon/phenolic to calculate the ablation, char, and temperature. The calculated result was compared with the result of a blast-tube-type test motor. It is found that the calculated result shows good agreement with the thermal response of the test motor, except at the vicinity of the throat insert.

  • The combustion chamber and nozzle of a liquid rocket engine should be protected from the high temperature combustion gas generated by the chamber. An upper-stage nozzle extension has a large expansion ratio, therefore, The light-weight refractory materials have been used since the weight impact on the launcher performance is crucial. Gas film cooling method was used before, but was not applicable nowadays. Ablative cooling method and radiative cooling method with niobium alloy, Ni-based superalloy and ceramic based composite have been used to this day.

  • In this paper, the thermal insulator structure of a real rocket which is fabricated in a way that laminated composite rings are connected in series is analyzed using 3-dimensional axisymmetric finite element models. Simulation of cowl zone using a real operating conditions provides that the stress distribution in the laminated composite ring is largely influenced by ply-angles, axial dimensions, and boundary conditions. Notably the plylift that is the precursor to the wedge-out occurs in the ring-to-ring bonding region. It is hypothesized that after the plylift the wedge is dropped out due to the shear stresses in the ply-angle direction and axial compressive stresses.
