  • IEEE 802.16 standard specifies the broadband wireless access (BWA) system including sleep mode to minimize the power consumption by a mobile station (MS). This paper outlines the overall operation of sleep mode and proposes a method to improve the power saving efficiency of the IEEE 802.16 sleep mode. The proposed method not only decreases the number of bytes that a MS in sleep mode needs to receive during listening interval but allows to indicate a control-specific operation such as periodic ranging.

  • STSAT-2 has an on-board satellite retroreflector array for precise orbit determination. Satellite retroreflector array reflects photon emitted from laser and uses to determine precisely the distance from ground station to satellite by the round-trip travel time of photon. The retroreflector array of protoflight model has been developed and verified through environmental tests. This paper describes the protoflight model of retroreflector array and reports environmental test results. The environmental tests of protoflight model retroreflector array were performed successfully without damage of corner cube prism occurred in engineering model development.

  • If ranging processes are not frequent in an uplink OFDMA system, the timing synchronization between base and mobile stations may not be maintained. Especially in the case of infrequent random accesses in a large cell, timing offsets can be considerable and the destroyed orthogonality of OFDMA signals may result in the degraded performance. This paper proposes a novel random access scheme for uplink OFDMA systems, which support the orthogonality of OFDMA signals with timing offsets by allowing a random access OFDMA symbol shorter than a normal one. In order to make uplink OFDMA systems robust to timing offsets, the proposed scheme inserts a zero-padding region in an OFDMA symbol.

  • In this paper, we develope the simulation model for Ethernet passive optical networks (Ethernet-PON) by using OPNET. Ethernet-PON is an emerging access network technology that provides a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines. The simulator uses a Request/Grant TDMA MAC protocol based on IEEE 802.3ah EFM. It also executes registration, ranging and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm by exchanging control packets between OLT and ONUs. We have evaluated for success ratio of initial registration process and delay of late registration process. We also have simulated for dynamic TDMA protocol and static TDMA protocol in terms of channel utilization and queueing delay. We expect that this simulator can help to determine various parameters which are considered for designing Ethernet-PON system.

  • In this paper, we propose low-complexity implementation of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) timing delay detector with multiple receive antennas for broadband wireless access (BWA). First, in order to reduce the computational complexity, the detection structure which rotates the phase of the received ranging symbols is introduced. Second, we propose the detection structure with the N-point/M-interval fast Fourier transform structure and a frequency-domain average-power estimator for complexity reduction without sacrificing the system performance. Finally, simulation results for the proposed structures and complexity comparison of the existing structure with the proposed detectors are presented.

  • Due to the limited power supply resources, it is essential that the minimization of algorithmic operation and the reduction of the hardware logical-resources in the design of the satellite transponder. It is also required that the transponder process the signals of various bandwidth efficiently, that is suitble for the SDR-based implementation. This paper proposes a variable rate down sampler which can provide variable bandwidth and data rate for carrier, ranging and sub-band command signals respectively. The proposed down sampler can provide multiple $2^M$ decimated outputs from a single half band filter with recursive arithmetic architecture, which can minimize the hardware resources as well as the arithmetic operations. The algorithm for hardware implementation as well as the analysis for the passband flatness and aliasing is presented and varified by the FPGA implementation.

  • A 8-bit 15MHz CMOS subranging Analog-to-Digital converter for high-speed, low-power consumption applications is described. Subranging, 2 step flash, A/D converter used a new resistor string and a simple comparator architecture for the low power consumption and small chip area. Comparator exhibites 80dB loop gain, 50MHz conversion speed, 0.5mV offset and maximum error of voltage divider was 1mV. This Analog-to-Digital converter has been designed and fabricated in 1.2 m N-well CMOS technology. It consumed 150mW power at +5/-5V supply and delayed 65ns. The proposed Analog-to-Digital converter seems suitable for high- speed, low-power consumption, small area applications and one-chip mixed Analog- Digital system. Simulations are performed with PSPICE and a fabricated chip is tested.

  • In this paper, we propose a Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access(SC-FDMA) scheme with greatly enhanced tolerance of timing offset among the users. The type of the proposed scheme is similar to code spread Multiple Carrier Direct Spread Code Division Multiple Access(MC DS CDMA). The proposed scheme performs partial Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) in order to solve high Peak to Average Power Ratio(PAPR) of the MC DS CDMA before Inverse Fast Fourier Transform(IFFT). Exploiting the property Properly Scrambled Walsh-Hadamard(PSW) code has zero correlation despite ${\pm}1$ chip timing offset, the proposed scheme achieves Multiple Access Interference free performance with the timing offset up to ${\pm}1$ OFDM symbol duration with low PAPR. In contrast, the other existing schemes in comparison undergo severe performance degradation even with small timing offset in multipath fading channel.

  • ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommends the introduction of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in 2025, which provides GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) correction data and the ranging signal via GEO (geostationary earth orbit) satellites to GNSS users. In this paper, we present the basic design results of the satellite communication system RF link for the Korean SBAS systems, KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) which is going on the development & implementation. KASS RF link was designed in consideration of both the C-band and Ku-band uplinks to meet the international standard requirements for the SBAS system, and identified the minimum EIRP and G/T performance of the KASS uplink station for each frequency band. These analysis results for the RF link design are expected to be used for an effective design of the subsystem specifications for KASS satellite communication system.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new approach for the design of uplink sub-channel allocation and power control in the High-speed Portable Internet system that is based on OmMAnDD scheme. In OFDMA system, because the number of allocated sub-channel in mobile station varies from one to the whole sub-channel as in base station while mobile station's transmit power is lower than that of base station, full loading range(FLR) constraint occurs where whole sub-channel can be used and the conventional open-loop power control scheme can not be used beyond FLR. We propose a new scheme that limits the maximum sub-channel allocation number and uses power concentration gain(PCG) depending on location of mobile station, which is based on ranging in OfDMA system. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme extends the uplink coverage to the entire cell service coverage area, provides solutions for optimum utilization of radio resource and enables open-loop power control beyond FLR without extra hardware complexity.
