Ginseng damage by the African mole cricket (GTyllotalpa africana Palisot de Beauvois) was investigated in the field and laboratory from 1984 to 1991. Ginseng damage by G. africana occurred mainly in the 2nd year ginseng fields during May and June (spring period), and the damage was not nearly recognized in September and October (fall period) when densities of G. africana adults were higher in the field. In the laboratory and field cage, damage of 2nd year ginseng considerably decreased during fall period, which had no relation to ginseng diameter, and 3rd year ginseng was not damaged at all. Soil hardness seemed to influence on ginseng damage by G. africana adults.
A study on seasonal changes in age structure and fecundity of Gryllotalpa africana Palisot de Beauvois was conducted in Suwon from 1991 through 194. It seemed that most of newly hatched nymphs emerge to adults in September and October, so have a life cycle a year, and some overwinter as nymphs and emerge to adults from August, so have a life cycle tow years. The mean number of eggs per cell was $36.00\pm$2.84 for egg cells laid in the laboratory, and $47.68\pm$4.35 for egg cells collected in the field. Mean and range of the numbers of egg cells produced per female were $1.17\pm$0.19 and 0~3.
Phonotaxis of the African mole cricket, Gryllotalpa africana palisot de Beauvois, was investigated in 1990 and 1992 at the agronomy Experiment Station of Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute in Hwaseong-gun, Kyonggi-do, Male adults produced calling sounds (calling songs) through the openings of subsurface burrows. Intensities of the sound were 77-80 dB at 15 cm above the openings. When tape recordings of male calling songs were broadcasted outdoors at 105-110 dB by two horn speakers installed at the center of a 1.4 m diameter-funnel, flying adults were attracted for 1.5 hours from about 30 minutes after sunset. Among attracted adults, 14.3-16.9% landed in the funnel, and 65.7-74.7% landed on the ground within 2m form the sound source. Females were 66.7-74.3%, which seemed to be due to the sex ratio of the population in the field. Adults landing in the funnel and at the distance of within 2m from the center of the funnel were tend to be a little more than those attracted to a blacklight trap.
Tremendous natural product extracts were used as a herb medicine remedy or therapy for centuries. Because these extracts have various biological activities, we examined the effects of Gryllotalpa orientalis extract for anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), hydroxy radical scarvenging and cyclooxygenase-2 promoter assays. Gryllotalpa orientalis extracts were prepared from solvents such as distilled water (DW), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol and methanol. The results showed that Gryllotalpa orientalis extracts have potent DPPH (methanol extract), FRAP (DW extract) and hydroxy radical scavenging (DW and methanol extracts) activity than any other extracts used. A significant inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) promoter activity was detected in the presence of DMSO extract or ethanol extract. Collectively, the present results suggested that Gryllotalpa orientalis extract could be used for anti-oxidant and/or anti-inflammation agent for human or agricultural purposes.
Surveys were conducted in 66 ginseng fields damaged by insect and other an~mal pests from 1984 to 1993. Holohichio rnoroso, Holotrichio dromphalio, Holotrichia titonis Malodera orientaliq Ectinus sericeus, Gyllotalpa ofricana, Teleog~iluse mmo, Ostrinio furnacoii* Agrotis tokionis, Marnestro brassicae, Hydrellia griseolo, unidentified stem maggo$, Pseudococcus comstocki (13 species of insects). Deroceras uarions (slug), Acusta despecta sieboldiona (snail), probably two species of rats. and pheasant species were ascertained to damage ginseng plants M them, Holotrich~a morosa, Holotrichia diomphalia, Gryliotaipo africanq Deroceras uarions, Acusto despech siebaldiano showed higher frequencies. Underground (root) damage occul~ed mainly in spring penod (MayJune) and fall period (September-Odober) in 2-year-old glnseng fields at slopes, and aboveground (leaf and stem) damage occurred mainly in spring period in 3 or more-year-old ginseng iields mulched with rice straws at plains. Three ginseng fields were abolished due to heavy underground damage.
Non-chemical or low-chemical control measures against key insect pests and rats in the ginseng field were studied from 1993 through 1999. Broadcasting chemicals beside the ginseng field in the oviposition period showed the same control effect on the adults of the Korean black chafer, Holotrichia diomphalia, as broadcasting at the ginseng ridge. Ginseng damage by adults of African mole cricket, Gryl1ota1pa africana, were reduced considerably by broadcasting chemicals beside the ginseng field. The larvae of wheat wireworm, Ectinus sericeus, were attracted effectively to potatoes in the ginseng field. Spreads of the mealybug, Pseudococcus comstocki, were very slow in the ginseng field, indicating that it is possible to eradicate the early colonies of Pseudococcus comstocki effectively. The rat repeller, Dekur $500S^{showed}$ a significant control effect of rats in the ginseng field.
phenological study on the oviposition, emergence, and flight activity of the African mole cricket adult has been made to obtain basic information for management of pest populations in ginseng fields. The flight activity, as monitored by the blarklight trap, seemed to be initiated depending on the sunset time and lasted about 2-2.5 hours. The trap data (1984-1988) showed that the adult flight of the species occurred twice a year, from early May to late June(Spring flight) and from late August to mid October(Fall flight) during which usually more crickets were trapped than during the former period. The number of females trapped was greater than that of males regardless to the flight period, i.e., females comprised 72.2%, 83.9%, and 73.3% of the total catches in 1984, 1985, and 1986, respectively. Adults emerged from late August to mid October and laid eggs from mid May to mid July the next year, indicating that the spring and fall flights correspond to the oviposition and emergence period, respectively.
The present study was conducted for two years to develop the indoor breeding system of mole cricket, Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister. In 2013, the total mean number of progenies was $430.{\pm}20.0$ ($mean{\pm}SE$); $15.3{\pm}25.8$ of 2nd-3rd instars, $28.8{\pm}24.0$ 3rd-5th and $2.4{\pm}2.7$ 6th-8th. In 2014, the rearing yielded similar result to that of 2013; $43.5{\pm}31.0$ in total with $25.8{\pm}25.6$ of 2nd-3rd instars, $23.6{\pm}21.3$ 3rd-5th and $2.9{\pm}2.3$ 6th-8th. The successful breeding rate using indoor cages was 46.9% in 2013 and 50.0% in 2014. In total 147 individuals were successfully reared in an outdoor rearing cage with 25 females released and 78 individuals in an indoor rearing cage with 100 females and 50 males released. 86.4% and 89.7% of the nymphs reared were collected within 25cm depth of the soil in the outdoor and indoor cage, respectively.
