  • The occurrence of the crown and root rot on strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) has been reported in greenhouses in Sancheong and Hamyang, Gyeongnam province, Korea in June, 2019. The infected plants showed browning rot of the inner crown and root, causing delayed development, lack of growth, and poor rooting. The browning rot of the inner crown and root can sometimes lead to wilting and collapsing of plants. Fungi were isolated from the symptomatic root and crown. Based on the results of morphological and phylogenetic analyses, the causal agent of the disease was identified to be Neopestalotiopsis clavispora. The fungal isolates were then used for inoculation into strawberry plants to determine the causal agent of the crown and root rot as per Koch's postulates. The inoculated strawberry plants showed the same symptoms as the originally infected plants, and the fungal pathogen re-isolated from the lesions showed the same morphological characteristics as the original pathogen. This is the first report on the occurrence of crown and root rot on strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) caused by N. clavispora in Korea.

  • The fungus Botrytis cinerea causes fruit rot of strawberry and the damages can result in harvest losses upto 50%. Proper timing of fungicide application is essential for successful control of Botrytis fruit rot, fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris, cyprodinil plus fludioxonil, fludioxonil alone, and Bacillus subtilis QST713 were applied to individual buds, flowers, and green and red fruit of cultivar 'Seolhyang' ex vivo. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil or fludioxonil alone was applied i) before and after a 5-hr period of low-temperature ($0^{\circ}C$) incubation ex vivo ii) in field trials. Strawberry flowers and red fruit were more susceptible to B. cinerea than the green fruits. Incidence of Botrytis rot with fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris and cyprodinil plus fludioxonil was the lowest at flowering, whereas B. subtilis QST713 did not significantly among treatments. In 2010, incidence of Botrytis fruit rot was significantly reduced when fludioxonil was applied two times at 1 week intervals from 50% bloom in field trials. Cultivars Redpearl and Seolhyang were more susceptible to low-temperature than cvs. Maehyang and Akihime. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil application was effective when applied before onset of the low-temperature treatment period. Fludioxonil showed the most effective when it was sprayed one and more than two times in before and post low-temperature condition, respectively. These results demonstrate that fungicide selection and timing can interact with stage of fruit development and low-temperature in determining effectiveness of suppression of Botrytis fruit rot.

  • This study was conducted to monitor the residue of the herbicide butachlor in major crops. The residue monitoring covered 106 samples of rice, barley, garlic, onion, and strawberry colledted from markets of intensive cultivation area including Kwangju, Daegu, and Pusan. The residue levels in 27 sample of polished rice produced by applying the herbicide were below the detection limits adopted analytical method. The residue levels in 21 sample of garlic, 18 sample of onion, and 18 sample of strawberry which were succeeding crops after paddy rice were also below the detection limits. In consequent, all the samples resulted safe status in terms of the butachlor residue level in agricultural produce.

  • It is necessary to develop an efficient and affordable cooling technology and apply the practical system to rural farmhouse, control to adequate growth environment by adjusting temperature of root zone. A study on managing medium temperature of the hydroponics for strawberry cultivation was conducted and feasible evaporative cooling system for the media cooling were as follows: Characteristics of temperature drop were investigated for the evaporative cooling devices using microporous film duct, felt mulching on media surface, and water permeable sheet in culture tank. The evaporative device with water permeable sheet in culture tank was the most efficient and economic on media cooling system.

  • In this paper, images are automatically acquired to control the initial disease of strawberries among facility cultivation crops, and disease analysis is performed using the EfficientNet model to inform farmers of disease status, and disease diagnosis service is proposed by experts. It is possible to obtain an image of the strawberry growth stage and quickly receive expert feedback after transmitting the disease diagnosis analysis results to farmers applications using the learned EfficientNet model. As a data set, farmers who are actually operating facility cultivation were recruited and images were acquired using the system, and the problem of lack of data was solved by using the draft image taken with a cell phone. Experimental results show that the accuracy of EfficientNet B0 to B7 is similar, so we adopt B0 with the fastest inference speed. For performance improvement, Fine-tuning was performed using a pre-trained model with ImageNet, and rapid performance improvement was confirmed from 100 Epoch. The proposed service is expected to increase production by quickly detecting initial diseases.

  • Strawberry is a stand-out cultivating fruit in Korea. The optimum production of strawberry is highly dependent on growing environment. Smart farm technology, and automatic monitoring and control system maintain a favorable environment for strawberry growth in greenhouses, as well as play an important role to improve production. Moreover, physiological parameters of strawberry plant and it is surrounding environment may allow to give an idea on production of strawberry. Therefore, this study intends to build a machine learning model to predict strawberry's yield, cultivated in greenhouse. The environmental parameter like as temperature, humidity and CO2 and physiological parameters such as length of leaves, number of flowers and fruits and chlorophyll content of 'Seolhyang' (widely growing strawberry cultivar in Korea) were collected from three strawberry greenhouses located in Sacheon of Gyeongsangnam-do during the period of 2019-2020. A predictive model, Lasso regression was designed and validated through 5-fold cross-validation. The current study found that performance of the Lasso regression model is good to predict the number of flowers and fruits, when the MAPE value are 0.511 and 0.488, respectively during the model validation. Overall, the present study demonstrates that using AI based regression model may be convenient for farms and agricultural companies to predict yield of crops with fewer input attributes.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of runner development based on production period and to investigate the yield in different cropping type to nursery plant age. In runner development experiment, heating + lighting + $GA_3$ + cluster removal treatment increased the number of runners by 13.1 times higher in spring season than control(heating only) in overwintering mother-plant. Treatment of 20ppm $GA_3$ was the most effective for runner production in autumn. In nursery plant age experiment, 60 days old nursery plants produced more flower cluster than 40 days old ones. This result indicated that the yield potential was so low that overwintering runners would be adaptable for spring or summer cultivation.
