Critical Discourse of Postmodern Aesthetics in Contemporary Furniture (III) - Consideration of the Ecology of Our Environment in New Design Furniture in terms of the Postmodern Aesthetics of Communication

  • 이 논문은 우리 환경의 생태계 보호를 위하여 뉴 디자인 가구가 어떻게 창조되고 있는지를 연구하였다. 즉, 오늘날 포스트 모던 시대에 뉴 디자인 가구 디자이너들이 환경 문제의 해결점의 하나로 새롭고 다른 방향으로 자신들의 가구를 창조할 수 있는가에 관한 담론이다. 우리가 안고 있는 생태계 보호를 위한 가구를 디자인할 때 필요한 재사용 및 재활용이 가능한 재료들, 유행을 초월한 가구, 가구의 견고성, 대량 생산 가구 등이 심각하게 분석되었다. 이 분석에 따르면 뉴 디자인 가구 디자이너들은 재활용된 재료들, 주거 환경 및 지속성, 새로운 가구 미학을 내포한 새로운 가구 디자인 철학을 얻을 수 있었다. 대량 생산된 가구는 경제성 때문에 많은 대중에게 접근되는 좋은 점보다는 우리에게 더 많은 쓰레기 더미를 준다라는 사실이 뉴 디자인 가구 다자이너들에게는 매우 심각한 문제였다. 따라서 가구 디자이너들이 양보다는 질에 중점을 둔 가구를 창조하는 것이 필요하다는 것이다. 결론적으로 환경적 책임을 느낀 뉴 디자인 가구 디자이너들은 튼튼하면서 재활용될 수 있으며 유행을 초월한 기능적이면서도 미적인 가구를 창조할 때만이 뉴 디자인 가구론 구입하는 소비자들이 뉴 디자인 가구를 올바른 방향에서 인식할 수 있을 것이다.

  • In the every genre of arts we can find the oriental Yin-Yang idea which has been descended from olden time in the Orient. It arouses our big interest especially in the domain of design and plastic arts as well as in the every field of human culture, and its study and application will enrich the qualities of design and plastic arts. I think it is with the Yin-Yang idea that we have to chase to our own cultural activities to make differance from the others. Without it, we cannot advance any more the traditional heritage into better and higher state of level than the West, and our philosophy and spiritual activities be stagnant in the same cultural categories as oter countris have in common. The countries which have no distinguishing feature of their own are very easy to place themselves in the border of world culture, not in center of it only to give an immitatin of others. I would like to put great emphasis on Yin-Yang idea in the field of design and plastic arts because it will give newness and novelty to all the p대ple who are not familiar with the oriental Yin-Yang idea.

Product Image Concentration System as a Design Strategy to Build Corporate Brand Image (기업 브랜드 이미지 구축을 위한 디자인 전략으로서의 제품 이미지 집중 체계)

  • This study is on the strategy for establishing successful corporate brand image, by understanding the need for increasing brand value based on the level of brand recognition. In order to carry this out, the PICS (Product Image Concentration System) is suggested, which includes Brand Image Analysis on a high-level, Product Image Programming based on the result of the image analysis, and Product Image Coherency Assessment and Management, resulting in setting up a guideline for gaining competitive advantage and brand management. Brand Image Analysis is a method that utilizes image association to understand brand disposition by analyzing the association pattern among available visual materials to measure the corporate and brand image inclinations. As the next step, Product Image Programming establishes design philosophy and principles based on the analysis of brand image, and the Visual Programming is a process for visualizing the intended product image direction. Lastly, Product Image Coherency Assessment examines whether to incorporate design philosophy and principles or not to arrive at an agreed evaluation criteria for developing designs coherent with the brand image. The PICS (Product Image Concentration System) is a practical method for increasing a company' competitive advantage and managing brand. The expectation on this system is to provide a guideline for applying brand image in design process more objectively. For further study, diversification of image spectrum based on expressive keywords and comparative analysis on images as well as a product image interpretation program to understand the order of visual materials will be necessary.

  • With the introduction of digital technology since the late 1970s, we have been shifting from the industrial era into the information age. New communication systems have changed our concept of reality. Korea has a wealthy communication heritage with its own language and alphabet. However, Korean typography today has struggled to keep its originality, and does not hold up well to international standards. Korean contemporary typography is not efficient for communicating. It is not orderly, organised and simple. It has currently become complicated and decorative. Moreover, many young designers are attracted by imitations of western trends. It is now time for Korea to reveal its own identity. How can it develop a new typographic language that is more sympathetic to Korean tradition\ulcorner How will Korean information design produce a contemporary style with international relevance that contributes to world culture\ulcorner This thesis will be developed a new Korean typographic language that relies more on Korean traditions. Simultaneously, in this thesis will be examined Swiss typography as a relevant style for a new Korean typography to incorporate. Swiss typography maintained a similar philosophy to Korean tradition with its emphasis on clarity and simplicity. This study will be explored the potential of creating a contemporary Korean typographic solution which combines the traditions of Korea with the clarity of Swiss typography. The first attitude of the new typographic language should focus on legibility. The second condition of the new typographic philosophy based on the ability of designers is interpretation of context. The third concept of the new language is founded on an objective, rational design attitude. The final mental attitude of the new typographic language should feel a deep obligation to traditions. It is crucial time for Korean alphabet to establish a relevant standard rather than goes uncritically with the international current. Korea has had worthy traditions.   • 2007년 본격적으로 시장에 출시된 터치폰은 시장의 관심을 받으며, 휴대전화의 한 영역으로 자리매김하였다. 전세계 휴대전화 시장에서 터치폰이 차지하는 비중은 급속도로 증가하고 있다. 삼성전자는 시장에 후발주자로서 터치폰 시장에 진입하였음에도 불구하고, 2009년 3분기 기준 전세계 터치폰 시장의 23.9% 점유율을 차지하며 1위를 차지하고 있다.터치폰에서의 선전으로 삼성전자는 전세계 휴대전화 판매량의 20.3%를 달성하며 2위 자리를 확고히 하고 있다. 이러한 상승 추세는 지속될 것으로 보이며, 터치폰에서의 성공에는 TouchWiz UX가 중심에 있다고 할 수 있다. 본 세션에서는 TouchWiz UX를 통한 삼성 터치폰의 성공 전략에 대해 소개하고자한다. 우선 TouchWiz UX가 탄생할 수 있었던 배경으로서 당사의 디자인 철학이자 UX 다지인 철학을 간단하게 소개한다. "Creating Emotional Journey"라는 슬로건 아래 "Desire", "Intrigue", "Delight"라는 핵심철학을 공유하고 있다. 다음으로 TouchWiz UX를 성공 시킬 수 있었던 UX 추진 전략을 "Good UX 전략", "브랜드화 전략", "진화 전략", "확산 전략" 으로 나누어 소개한다. 첫째, Good UX 전략에서는 "Simple", "Robust", "Reliable"의 3대 원칙하에 사용성이 높고 감성을 자극하는 UX를 만들기위해 노력하였다. 둘째, 브랜드화 전략에서는 UX를 마케팅에 적극적으로 활용하여 TouchWiz라는 UX 브랜드를 탄생시켰다. 셋째, 진화 전략에서는 TouchWiz 1.0에서 2.0으로 진화하는 과정에서 핵심적인 부분은 유지하면서 발전시켜 나가는 전략을 선택하였다. 넷째, 확산 전략에서는 TouchWiz UX가 각기 다른 OS, Platform, 사업자에 따라 공통화, 차별화를 병행하여 확산하였다. 마지막으로, 내년에 소개될 TouchWiz 3.0에 대해 전략과 키워드를 간단히 소개한다.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristic of Swedish craft and modern design in especially furniture and interior design through the philosophy and humanitarian functionalism of Svenskt Tenn. The study completed through researching what the design paradigm of architecture and furniture design in those days was, and theoretically analyzing how this unique brand became a leading modern Swedish style in the European stream of functionalism design. Working upon this research, the study concludes the concept of the humanitarian functionalism design what Firma Svenskt Tenn wanted to realize through analyzing the aspects of form and material of Josef Frank' works who mainly contributed to form the Svenskt Tenn's unique design identity and comparing them to the other design examples of those days. The result are as follows: 1) Organic composition of space and elements, styles and functions, 2) Unique space composition of amalgamation, 3) Open space with abstract patterns, 4) Furniture shapes of displaying space environment, 5) Overcoming the limits of pragmatic functionalism based on rationalism.

Qualitative User Research Method for Design for the Elderly (고령자 대상 디자인을 위한 정성적 사용자 조사 방법)

  • Aging is rapidly progressing around the world. This study explore and propose a qualitative user research method to specifically understand the needs and desires of the elderly based on a human-centered design philosophy for design targeting the increasing elderly. In particular, the purpose of this study is to propose a user research method that can be easily used when designing products used by the elderly in the actual design site. For this purpose, this study examined the use and implications of using shadowing, interviews, and direct experience while actually proceeding with the walking stick design. The shadowing was organized through the AEIOU frame, and the interview was conducted by adding a significance category to reflect the recent trend of the silver generation. For the direct experience, design implications were derived by setting up four user behavior scenarios, each indoors and outdoors, and experiencing them directly by designers. This study is expected to be an important user research guideline in the current situation where the demand for design for the elderly is diversifying and increasing.

The Comparative Study on Contemporary Cultural Facilities in the City Environment (도시 환경과 디자인 계획으로 본 현대 문화시설 비교 연구)

  • This study examines the multi-functionality of the cultural facilities and explores the architectural characteristics of cultural facilities in city environment. For this purpose, 1 examine the major cultural facilities in USA and Singapore. Recently, the inter-cultural communication methods have been diversified and the cultural facilities need to be designed to effectively accommodate the public's interests in these activities. It is also necessary to reexamine cultural facilities' functions in terms of how the multi-functionality facilities reflect the surrounding environment. This study also sheds a new light on the meaning of the relationships between cultural activity, and the cultural facility design. For this, I primarily look at the various design categories of cultural buildings and their main functions. Finally, I demonstrate how both cultural activity and cultural facility design elements are embodied in the city environment.

  • In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, design has developed into a fusion of diversified culture and media. The integration of traditional culture and brand design concepts has become a hot research topic. Chinese Zen thought integrates the thoughts of Laozi and Zhuangzi, and takes" Wu Xiang as the appearance, Wu Nian as the foundation, Wu Zhu as the purpose" as the main purpose to construct a unique Zen thought system that integrates Taoism, Confucian philosophy and aesthetics. From this point of view, the MUJI design that combines Chinese Zen thought and design has attracted much attention. As a traditional culture, how is Chinese Zen Thought reflected in the design of MUJI? Starting from the awareness of this question, this study takes the daily necessities of MUJI as an example to investigate the design features of MUJI that reflect Chinese Zen thought. The conclusion shows that the design features of MUJI with Chinese Zen thoughts are showed in four ways-minimalist style, unitary color, ecological material, and humanized experience.

  • In the Western Philosophy that was centered on reason, sense has been belittled as a low level of conception under reason. However, the 21st century modern visual environment pushes away the epistemology centered on reason and puts 'sensuality' and 'sense' on its place. Especially, public films are one of the fields that rapidly reflect such changes and lead the changes. However, unfortunately, it is difficult to find such efforts that reflect the artistic and aesthetic significance of sense from the public films. It is because that sense is considered superficial and somewhat not real, while recognizing sense as the low level of conception under reason over the long history. Given the fact, this study reviews the by Gilles Deleuze, a modern philosopher who gives a new value on sense, and it would be meaningful to analyze the works of Chris Cunningham who makes films with the concept of Gilles Deleuze. After we analyzed three music videos of Aphex Twin directed by Chris Cunningham, we can ascertain that the films are based on body without Oranges, hysteric, and diagram that are suggested from by Gilles Deleuze. Analyzing recently released films centered on 'sense' in a superficial manner that includes production method or picture composition, including the films of Chris Cunningham, falls into the error of overlooking the director's aesthetics. Understanding the modern logic of sense that is newly developing, studying its substance, and analyzing the films will make a sacrifice of suggesting a new alternative.
