  • This paper deals with a moving coil type linear motor for fast access of the miniature ODD. This slim-line motor is composed of the mover supported by guide mechanism, the coil wound into it, and the yoke attached to the permanent magnet for stator. The driving force is generated by the PM of the stator and the current in the coils of the mover. Magnetic circuit analysis and Finite Element Method are applied to estimate the thrust force at air gap. In order to compare the force characteristics between two methods, various experiment results are applied to verify on a prototype. Also the flexible modes of the motor are predicted through the FEM and the structural components are modified to locate this on high frequency region.

  • This paper is focused on the frictionally induced thermoelastic instability (TEI) in automotive disk brakes. This instability leads to the formation of localized high temperature contact regions known as hot spots. This article investigates the themoelastic instability in automotive disk brake systems consisting of a finite thickness layer (disk) and two half-planes (pads) using a perturbation method. The antisymmetric mode involves hot spots located alternately on two sides of the disk. As a result the circumferentially periodic hot spots produce rotor surface distortion and Induce low frequency vibration. Also the effects of system parameters on the critical speed for TEI are investigated.

  • The squeal propensity of an automotive disc brake system is studied in the theoretical and computational manner. The rotating disc is in contact with two stationary pads and the nonlinear friction is engaged on the contact surface. The friction-coupled equations of motion are derived in the finite element(FE) of the actual brake disc and pad. From the general definition of friction force, the rotation and in-plane mode effects can be included properly in the brake squeal model. The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis and the mode shape visualization at squeal frequencies are also conducted for the detailed investigation. It is found that the squeal propensity is strongly influenced by rotation effect and the in-plane mode can be involved in squeal generation.

  • To investigate the vibration characteristics of compact disc player(CDP) due to excited vibration and disturbances, it is necessary to consider the transmissibility of the CDP. The disturbances as well as the temperature in the vehicle are the one of the important factors when CDP is designed. In this study, the effect on the temperature of the oil damper, which is applied to anti-vibration system of the CDP, was investigated. When the temperature was changed from -30 to 90 and the properties of the oil damper (hardness of rubber, viscosity of oil) were changed, the transmissibility was measured.

  • Free vibration characteristics of an initially stressed CD/DVD disk, which is designed for increasing critical speeds of current optical disks, are analyzed using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique based on variational formulations. Natural frequencies of the new disk depend on membrane stresses caused by disk rotation as well as residual stresses imposed during the cooling process of the injection molding. Critical speeds are calculated for the various initial patterns of radial and circumferential stresses. Initially imposed tensile stresses increase the natural frequencies of all the vibration modes except zero nodal diameter mode, whose natural frequency is independent of circumferential stress. A new disk with initial tensile stress of 0.5MPa is shown to have its critical speed about 30 % higher than the current optical disk.

  • To satisfy operation condition in information storage device, the suspension shape is very important since it correlates to dynamic characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic characteristics by using finite element analysis, shape optimization. The suspension has various modes according to different kinds of frequency bandwidth. Sway mode and second torsion mode are especially critical among them. (omitted)

  • In this study, experimental tests for driving noise of various optical disk drives (ODD) have been performed using 1/2' microphone noise measurement system. Several new and old ODD models by different manufacturers are practically considered and compared for realistic driving conditions. Sound insulation case with absorbing material for the present experimental tests is designed and constructed using CATIA system. It is found that average data transfer rate, operating RPM, and sound noise level seem to be different for the ODD models with same denoted speed by different manufacturers. Moreover, driving sound noise level can be largely affected by both tray shape and driving speed even for the condition of the same apparent data transfer rate.

  • This research demonstrates the shock response analysis of a head disk assembly subjected to a half-sine shock pulse in the axial direction. In case of disk analysis, the numerical method presented by Barasch and Chen is used. Galerkin method is used with mode shape by numerical method. Head-suspension system is modeled as the cantilever in order to get simulation results. Simulation results of HDA are calculated by Runge-Kutta method. Finally, shock responses of head and disk are analyzed according to the change of the rotating speed of the disk.

  • Consumer's product selection measures are being shifted from the units' operational performance to overall performance. Low noise, low vibration, and low power consumption rate, etc. which used to be additional quality indices, now become vital performance factors. Especially, noise and vibration characteristics are being considered as equivalent to/or even more critical than operational performance in certain products such as office machines and home entertainment systems, which share the same space with human being's daily life. Therefore, noise reduction and sound quality improvement technology becomes an inevitable design issue for those applications. Qualitative noise characteristics of rotating polygonal disk applied to digital printer systems are presented. Overall sound pressure level change and tonal noise variation with respect to the geometrical properties of polygonal disk, operational speed, and others are briefly discussed based on experimental results.
