  • Numerical analyses are performed to show the effect of stiffening facade riggers on the behavior of the structure and to investigate the optimum locations of facade riggers. Optimum locations of the facade riggers to minimize the drift at the top of the structure are obtained by maximizing the drift reduction caused by the facade riggers and are significantly influenced by the bending and shear stiffnesses of the braced frame and facade riggers. Three standard load cases of uniformal and triangularly distributed lateral loads as well as a lateral point load at the top of the structure are considered in this paper Optimum locations of facade riggers are plotted as functions of nondimensional relative stiffness parameters ${\omega}$ and ${\beta}$ for structures with one to four riggers. Although the analysis presented herein is based on certain simplifying assumptions, it is believed that the results do provide sufficiently accurate information for determining the optimum locations of facade riggers in highrise structures.

  • Active earth pressure formula, which can consider the effects of ground surface inclination, inclination of inside retaining wall face, wall friction, line load, uniform load, soil cohesion and adhesion, was derived based on the force equilibrium principle. In order to verify the accuracy of this proposed formula, the calculated active earth pressures by the proposed formula were compared with those of graphical solutions. Also, the active earth pressures determined by the proposed formula were compared with those by Coulomb's, Rankine's and Mazindrani's solution under specific conditions. The results matched quite well not only with the graphical solutions but also with those by three other methods. Also, the trend of active earth pressures by the proposed formula were corresponded with results of experimental study by Fang, et al. It can be concluded that this generalized formula not only can overcome the limitations of Rankine's, Coulomb's and Mazindrani's active earth pressure formula but also can consider the external loading conditions.

  • The governing equation of the post-buckling of shear-deformable uniform columns under a combined load consisting of a uniformly distributed axial load and a concentrated load at a free end was derived and the post-buckling analysis was investigated by using differential transformation. The loads were obtained for various end-slopes. The results obtained by the present method agree well with published results. In this paper, the differential transformation method was illustrated through its application to the non-linear differential equation of the post-buckling. It is expected that applications of the method to more challenging problems will are expected follow in future to ensue.

  • The live loads acting on structures are generally computed in terms of equivalent uniformly distributed loads for the simplicity in design process. The loads, therefore, tend to decrease with increasing influence area in both load intensity and variance. Since multi-story column loads result from accumulation of loadings acting on several different floors, its influence area becomes wider and lifetime maximum decreases. In the design codes proposing the design loads for types of structural members (i.e., slabs, beams, columns), not for tile change of influence area, some proper reduction factors are given for columns which support more than one floor. Using the live load models developed for colons supporting single floor, in this study, the probabilistic characteristics of multi-story column loads are analyzed. In addition reduction factors given for multi-story columns in current practice are calibrated.

  • In this paper, we present the analytical study results of buckling behavior of elastically restrained orthotropic plates. In the study the boundary conditions of the plate are simply supported at all four edges and elastically restrained by the elastic medium at opposite two longitudinal edges. The energy method is employed in the solution of the problems in which method the buckling coefficient is calculated from the condition that the work-done by the external forces during buckling is equal to the stored elastic strain energy. The results are presented in the graphical from. The equations derived for the orthotropic plate in this study are compared with existing isotropic ones and identical results were observed.

  • The differential quadrature method (DQM) is applied to computation of the eigenvalues of the equations governing in plane and out-of-plane buckling. In-plane buckling and twist-buckling under uniformly distributed radial loads are investigated by this method. Critical loads are calculated for various end conditions and opening angles. Results are compared with existing exact solutions where available. The differential quadrature method gives good accuracy even when only a limited number of grid points is used. New results are given for two sets of boundary conditions not previously considered for this problem clamped-clamped and clamped simply supported ends.

  • The free vibrations of thermally buckled, simply supported, symmetrically laminated, rectangular, and quasi-isotropic plates are investigated. The nonlinear postbuckling analysis is performed by the finite element method based on the first order shear deformable plate theory with the use of von Karman type nonlinear strains and the Duhamel-Newman type constitutive law. The postbuckling solutions are used to obtain free vibration responses of buckled plates. Several numerical examples for quasi-isotropic laminated plates are considered. The effects of width-to-thickness ratios and aspect ratios on the free vibration characteristics of buckled plates are investigated.

  • One of the efficient procedures for the solution of partial differential equations is the method of differential quadrature. This method has been applied to a large number of cases to circumvent the difficulties of programming complex algorithms for the computer, as well as excessive use of storage due to conditions of complex geometry and loading. Under in-plane uniform distributed load, the buckling of asymmetric curved beam with varying cross section is analyzed by using differential quadrature method (DQM). Critical load due to diverse cross section variation and opening angle is calculated. Analysis result of DQM is compared with the result of exact analytic solution. As DQM is used with small grid points, exact analysis result is shown. New result according to diverse cross section variation is also suggested.

  • In the conventional outrigger system, the outriggers are located in the planes of the core walls and this system has disadvantage of obstructing flexibility in the interior layout. But thc facade riggers in the structure uc located In the exterior frames in the direction of the lateral loading. The interaction between the traced frames and facade riggers is through the floor diaphragms adjacent to the chords of the riggers. This paper presents an approximate analysis technique lot preliminary analysis of multiple facade rigger stiffened braced frames in tall buildings subjected to uniformly and triangularly distributed loads as well as a lateral point load at the top of the structure. Comparisons with the results by the program MIDAS for the structural models have shown that this analysis can give reasonably accurate results for highrise braced frames with multiple facade riggers. The method allows a simple procedure for obtaining the optimum level of the facade riggers in addition to a rapid assessment of the influence of the facade riggers on the performance of the highrise structure such as the reduction in lateral deflection at the top and the overturning moment at the base of the braced frame.
