  • Compared to 31-mode rings, 33-mode rings are highly utilized as wide bandwidth underwater acoustic transducers because the electro-mechanical coupling and piezoelectric constant d are high. On the other hand, the 31-mode ring is an axial symmetry structure, so it is possible to model it as a simple two-dimensional asymmetrical model for numerical analysis, but the 33-mode ring requires a three-dimensional numerical analysis. That is, a lot of computing resources and computation time are required. In this study, the effective material properties of an equivalent 31-mode ring were derived to simulate the electro-mechano-acoustical responses of the 33-mode ring transducer. Using the effective material properties derived from this study, a numerical analysis of rings in vacuum, air backed rings in water, and FFR (Free Flooded Ring) transducers were performed to compare the responses of 33-mode rings.

  • In this study an effective stress analysis was performed to evaluate liquefaction potential and ground settlement for reclaimed sites. The effective stress model can simulate the stiffness degradation due to excess pore pressure and resulting ground deformation. It is applicable to a wide range of strain. An equivalent linear analysis suitable for low strain levels was also carried out to compare the effective stress analysis. Shear stress ratio calculated from an equivalent linear analysis was used to determine SPT blow count to prevent liquefaction. Depending on the magnitude of potential earthquake and fine contents, the SPT blow count was converted into an equivalent cone tip resistance. It was compared with the measured cone tip resistance. The measured elastic shear wave velocity and cone tip resistance from two reclaimed sites in Incheon were used to perform liquefaction analyses. Two liquefaction evaluation methods showed similar liquefaction potential which was evaluated continuously. The predicted excess pore pressure ratio of upper 20 m was between 40% and 70%. The calculated post-shaking settlement caused by excess pore pressure dissipation was less than 10 cm.

  • A new continuum damage theory (CDT) has been proposed by Lee et al. (1996) based on the SEEP. The CDT has the apparent advantage over the other related theories because the complete constitutive law can be readily derived by simply replacing the virgin elastic stiffness with the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness obtained by using the proposed continuum damage theory. In this paper, the CDT is evaluated by the numerical experiment comparing the mode shapes and natural frequencies of a square plate containing a small line-through crack with those of the same plate with a damaged site replaced with the effective orthotropic elastic stiffness computed by using the CDT.

  • This paper describes the results of structural integrity and crashworthiness of Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) vehicle made of sandwich composites. The applied sandwich composite of vehicle structure was composed of aluminum honeycomb core and WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite facesheet. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model fer the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The finite element analysis using ANSYS v11.0 was dont to evaluate structural integrity of AGT vehicle according to JIS E 7105 and ASCE 21-98. Crashworthiness analysis was carried out using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. The crash condition was frontal accident with speed of 10km/h at rigid wall. The results showed that the structural integrity and crashworthiness of AGT vehicle were proven under the specified loading and crash conditions. Also, the modified Chang-Chang failure criterion was recommended to evaluate the failure modes of composite structures after crashworthiness event.

  • A study on mechanical property characterization and modeling technique was carried out to approximate the behaviour of structures with 2.5D C/SiC material. Several tensile tests were performed to analyze the behaviour characteristics of the 2.5D C/SiC material and elastic property was characterized by applying a mathematical homogenization and a modified rule of mixture. SiC matrix representing the elasto-plastic behavior approximates as a bilinear function. Then the equivalent yield strength and equivalent plastic stiffness were calculated by minimizing errors in experiment and approximation. RVE(Representative Volume Element)was defined from the fiber and matrix configuration of 2.5D C/SiC and a process of calculating the effective stiffness matrix by applying the modified rule of mixture to RVE was implemented in the ABAQUS User-defined subroutine. Finite element analysis was performed by applying the mechanical properties of fiber and matrix calculated based on the proposed process, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A unified correlation of the interfacial friction factor for air-water and steam-water flows in inclined rectangular channels has been developed. The correlation was expressed in the form of a power law of the liquid and the gas Reynolds number, and the liquid-to-gas viscosity ratio. In addition, a relation between the equivalent roughness and the intensity of wave height fluctuation of the interface has been investigated. A new dimensionless intensity of fluctuation including a liquid film Reynolds number is proposed. It has been shown that the dimensionless equivalent roughness, which is calculated from the Nikuradse equation, can be uniquely related to this dimensionless intensity of fluctuation for both air-water and steam-water flows.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of crashworthiness and rollover characteristics of low-floor bus vehicles made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites with glass-fabric epoxy laminate facesheets. Crashworthiness and rollover analysis of low-floor bus was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite laminate facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The crash conditions of low-floor bus were frontal accident with speed of 60km/h. Rollover analysis were conducted according to the safety rules of European standard (ECE-R66). The results showed that the survival space for driver and passengers was secured against frontal crashworthiness and rollover of low-floor bus. Also, The modified Chang-Chang failure criterion is recommended to predict the failure mode of composite structures for crashworthiness and rollover analysis.

  • This paper discusses the homogenization method to determine effective average elastic constants of a linear structure by considering its microstructure. A detailed description on the homogenization method is given for the linear elastic material and then the finite element approximation is performed for an investigation of elastic properties. An asymptotic expansion is carried out in the cross-section area, or in the unit cell. Two and three lay-up structures made up of individual isotropic constituents are chosen for numerical examples to check discrepancies between results generated by this theoretical development and the conventional approach. Asymptotic characteristics of the process in extracting the stiffness of structure locally formed by spatial repetitions yield underestimated values of stiffness. These discrepancies are detected by the asymptotic corrective term which is ascribed to considerations of microscopic perturbations and proved in the finite element formulation. The asymptotic analysis is the more reasonable in analysing the composite material, rather than the conventional approach to calculate the macroscopic average for elastic properties.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

  • The penetration of the probe produces the excess pore pressure due to the disturbance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the disturbance zone by using the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure, which was generated due to the penetration of the penetrometer with different size. The CPT, DMT and FVP (Field Velocity Probe) are adopted for in-situ tests. The tests are carried out in the construction site of north container pier of Busan new port, Korea where is accelerating the consolidation settlement using plastic board drains (PBD) and surcharges by crushed gravels. The coefficient of consolidation $(C_h)$ and soil properties are deduced by the laboratory test. The in-site tests are performed after the predrilling the surcharge zone at the point of 90% degree of consolidation. To minimize the penetration effect, the horizontal distance between penetration tests is 3m, the change of the pore pressure is monitored at the fixed depth of 24m. The coefficient of consolidation $(C_h)$ and the $t_{50}s$ are calculated based on the laboratory test and the in-situ data, respectively. The equvalent radi based on the $t_{50}$ shows that the FVP and the DMT produce the smallest and the greatest equivalent radi, respectively.
