  • Extensive numerical experiments have been carried out to investigate effect of block size and fracture geometry on hydraulic characteristics of fractured rock masses based on connected pipe flow in DFN systems. Using two fracture sets, a total of 72 2-D fracture configurations were generated with different combinations of fracture size distribution and deterministic fracture density. The directional block conductivity including the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated fracture network system were calculated using the 2-D equivalent pipe network method. There exist significant effects of block size, orientation, density and size of fractures in a fractured rock mass on its hydraulic behavior. We have been further verified that it is more difficult to reach the REV size for the fluid flow network with decreasing intersection angle of two fracture sets, fracture plane density and fracture size distribution.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the scheme to apply one-dimensional finite volume method (FVM) to natural river with complex geometry. In the previous study, FVM using the Riemann approximate solver was performed successfully in the various cases of dam-break, flood propagation, etc. with simple and rectangular cross-sections. We introduced the transform the natural into equivalent rectangular cross-sections. As a result of this way, the momentum equation was modified. The accuracy and applicability of newly developed scheme are demonstrated by means of a test example with exact solution, which uses triangular cross-sections. Secondly, this model is applied to natural river with irregular cross-sections and non-uniform lengths between cross-sections. The results shows that the aspect of flood propagation, location and height of hydraulic jump, and numerical solutions of maximum water level are in good agreement with the measured data. Using the developed scheme in this study, existing numerical schemes conducted in simple cross-sections can be directly applied to natural river without complicated numerical treatment.

  • Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed. Couple of aggregates, like two different marine aggregates and two different crushed stones, have been employed. The measured flatness ratios of each aggregate were 0.30, 0.36, 0.47 and 0.83, respectively. Also, the conversion shape coefficients of each aggregate were determinded as 0.77, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.92. The size of aggregate has been modified by multiplying the shape conversion coefficient and the aggregate size from DIP. The modified gradation curve with modified volume and weight of aggregate has been suggested. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

  • For effective radiotherapy, it should always be considered that calculation of different dose distribution in heterogenous tissue is important particularly on lung which has low density and large volume. To take precise dose distribution of 6MV X-ray in the thoracic cage, the authors had made a tissue equivalent phantom for thorax, measured dose distribution by thermoluminescent dosimeter and mm dosimeter, and derived methmetical equation coincided with provided theoretical formula. In comparision with isodose curve on case of homogeneous soft tissue, dose of heterogeneous lung tissue had been shown increase about 4% per cm depth on one and multiportal field, less than 15% difference on rotation field for esophagus, and around 20% difference on rotation field for lung according to the degree of rotation angle that must be corrected by dose compensation.

  • Concrete contains numerous microcracks at initially poured. The growth and propagation of nicrockacsk are believed tc finally incur the faiure of concrete. These processings are understood as a damage. Damage IS represented as a second-order tensor and crack is treated as a con tinuum phenomenon. In this paper, damage is characterized through the effective stress concept together with the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, and damage evolution law and constitutive equation of a damage model are derived by using the Helmholtz frte eriergy and the dissipation potential by means of the thermodynamic principles. The constitutive equation of the model includes the effects of elasticity, anisotropic damage and plasticity of concrete. There are two effective tangent stiffness tensors in this model : one is for elastic-darnage and the other for plastic damage. For the verification of the model, finite element analysis was performed for the analysis of concrete subjec:t to uniaxial and biaxial loading and the results obtained were compared with test results.

  • In this study, a case analysis for thermal design of electronic equipment using a phase change material(PCM) was performed numerically using ANSYS Fluent. Experiments were conducted to find the temperature increase(${\Delta}T_m$), melting temperature($T_m$), and volume expansion of the PCM under the melting process. To verify the accuracy of the Fluent solver model, $T_m$, ${\Delta}T_m$, and the melting time were compared with experimental results. To simulate the temperature stagnation phenomenon under the melting process, the equivalent specific heat method was applied to calculate the thermal properties of the PCM in the solver model. To determine the thermal stability of electronic equipment, we paid special attention to finding a thermal design for the PCM using fins. Further, an additional numerical analysis is currently underway to find an optimum design.

  • This study proposes finite element modeling of dislocation punching at cooling after consolidation in order to calculate the strength of particle-reinforced aluminum composites. The Taylor dislocation model combined with strain gradient plasticity around the reinforced particle is adopted to take into account the size-dependency of different volume fractions of the particle. The strain gradients were obtained from the equivalent plastic strain calculated during the cooling of the spherical unit cell, when the dislocation punching due to CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch is activated. The enhanced yield stress was observed by including the strain gradients, in an average sense, over the punched zone. The tensile strength of the SiCp/Al 356-T6 composite was predicted through the finite element analysis of an axisymmetric unit cell for various sizes and volume fractions of the particle. The predicted strengths were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Further, the particle-size dependency was clearly established.

  • As a basic study for investigating the development of the stress-induced crack in Hoek-Brown rock, a homogenization technique of elastic cracks is proposed. The onset of crack is monitored by Hoek-Brown empirical criterion, while the orientation of the crack is determined by the critical plane approach. The concept of volume averaging in stress and strain component was invoked to homogenize the representative rock volume which consists of intact rock and cracks. The formulation results in the constitutive relations for the homogenized equivalent anisotropic material. The homogenization model was implemented in the standard FEM code COSMOSM. The numerical uniaxial tests were performed under plane strain condition to check the validity of the propose numerical model. The effect of friction between the loading plate and the rock sample on the mode of deformation and fracturing was examined by assuming two different contact conditions. The numerical simulation revealed that the homogenized model is able to capture the salient features of deformation and fracturing which are observed commonly in the uniaxial compression test.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior of eight a third scale columns made of high-strength concrete(HSC). The columns were subjected to constant axial load corresponding to target value of 30 percent of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement(Ps=1.58, 2.25 %), tie configuration(hoop-type, cross-type, diagonal-type) and tie yield strength(fy=5,600, 7,950 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results indicated that the flexural strength of all the columns did not exceed calculated flexural capacities based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in current design code. Columns with 42 percent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-99 were shown ductile behavior. With axial load of 30 percent of the axial load capacity, the use of high-strength steel as transverse reinforcement may lead to equal or higher ductility than would be achieved with low-strength steel.

  • The riverbed material survey is to investigate the particle size distribution, specific gravity, porosity, etc. as basic data necessary for river channel plan such as calculation of sediment transport and change of river bed. In principle, the survey spots are 1 km interval in the longitudinal direction of the river and 3 points or more in the 1 cross section. Therefore, depending on longitudinal length of the river to be investigated, the number of surveyed sites is very large, and the time and cost for the investigation are correspondingly required. This study is to compare the particle size analysis method with the volumetric method and the image analysis method in work efficiency and cost and to examine the applicability of the image analysis method. It was confirmed that the diameter of the equivalent circle converted by the image analysis method can be applied to the analysis of bed material particle size. In the gravel stream with a particle size of less than 10 cm and a large shape factor, the analytical result of the bed material by the image analysis method is accurate. However, when the shape factor decreases as the particle size increases, the error increases. In addition, analysis results of the work efficiency and cost of the volume method and the image analysis method showed a reduction of about 80%.
