  • An equivalent linearization technique based on Rayleigh peak distribution for friction damper and brace system (FDBS) under stochastic excitation is proposed. For verification, shaking table test of a small scale 3-story building model with the FDBS is conducted for various slip moment levels. Using experimental result, equivalent linearization of the FDBS is conducted based on Rayleigh peak distribution, which is compared with measured peak distribution. For comparative study, model updating technique is applied based on identified modal properties. Finally, complex modal analysis and time history analysis for the obtained equivalent linear systems are conducted and compared with experimental result.

  • This paper presents modeling and analysis of static and dynamic characteristics in PWM Boost AC-AC converter used for input voltage sag compensation of custom power. Especially, using circuit DQ transformation technique, an equivalent circuit in fundamental frequency domain is obtained which has all the system characteristics. Moreover, voltage gain and input power factor is analytically induced and linearized state equation at the specific operating point is given. Finally, simulation results show the validity of the proposed modelling and analyses.

  • The characters of linear response of ship among irregular waves were researched. But nonlinear characters of ship motion in irregular waves have not been considered. Then the author showed a method to linearize nonlinearity of damping coefficient of ship by making statistically equivalent linear theory and get equivalent gain K from the condition that the difference of variance between linear response and approximate response is minimum and show that the results of correlogram and spectrum, obtained from this method, for model 700 GT Ferry boat agree with the actual response. The author pays a particular attention not to the nonlinear element but to nonlinear system itself.

  • The subject of this paper is the simulation of a nonlinear stochastic differential equation. The Monte-Carlo solution of stochastic problems is applied to solve it. The method has been applied to problems involving nonlinear rolling motion of ships in irregular waves. These results are compared with those obtained by the stochastic linearization method and the equivalent nonlinear equation method to demonstrate its usefulness.

  • This study presents key parameters for the structure installed with MR controller in reducing its responses. MR controller is regarded as Bingham model of which control forces are frictional and viscous ones. The parameters are identified as friction force ratios, $R_f$ and $R_h$ which are, respectively, ratio of MR controller friction force to static restoring force for free vibration and ratio of the friction force to amplitude of harmonic force. Structure-MR controller system shows nonlinear response behavior due to friction force. Energy balance strategy is adopted to transform the behavior to linear one with equivalent damping ratio. Finally, proposed equivalent linear process is compared to the nonlinear one, which turns out to give acceptably good results.

  • A method to identify nonlinear elements position of a nonlinear system is presented. Nonlinear elements position can be identified by an equivalent error damping and stiffness matrices which are based on the equivalent linearization technique. The procedures of this technique are: (1) Obtain input force and system response. (2) Define error between the actual and linearized restoring forces. (3) Calculate linearized damping and stiffness coefficients to minimize the square error sum. Several examples are tested and found that these methods are very effective not only to locate the nonlinear elements position but also to identify the degree of nonlinearity qualitatively. Nonlinear type can be qualitatively identified by examining the plots of restoring force vs equivalent state values.

  • The seismic responses of small-scale spatial frames such as school gymnasiums are usually evaluated using static analysis, although time-history analysis should be carried out to fully incorporate the dynamic responses of the structures against seismic motions. In this study, advanced static analysis procedures arc presented for school gymnasiums that will improve the performance evaluation against seismic motions. The seismic loads are approximated by equivalent static loads corresponding to the two performance levels; i.e., Levels 1 and 2 defined by the Japanese building standard. The importance of utilizing the eigenmode in the load pattern is discussed. Simple static analysis procedures are presented for evaluation of maximum vertical acceleration. It is shown that the static analysis for Level 2 input significantly underestimates the responses by dynamic analysis; however, the inelastic responses for Level 2 are shown to be successfully evaluated using the equivalent linearization that is similar to the $^{\circ}$Dmethod based on calculation of limit strength$^{\circ}{\pm}$ for building frames in Japan.

  • The eigenfunction expansion method is appled for the wave scattering by a vertical slotted, where both the inertial and quadratic drag terms are involved. Quadratic drag term representing the energy loss is linearized by the application of socalled equivalent linearization. The drag coefficient, which was empirically determined by Yoon et al.(2006) and Huang(2007) is used. Analytical results are verified by comparison to the experimental results conducted by Kwon et al.(2014) and Zhu and Chwang(2001). Using the developed design tool, the effect of energy loss by a vertical slotted wall is estimated with various design parameters, such as porosity, submergence depth, shape of slits and wave characteristics. It is found that the maximum value of energy loss across the slotted wall is generated at porosity value less than P = 0.1. The present solutions can provide a good predictive tools to estimate the wave absorbing efficiency by a slotted-wall breakwater.
