Axisymmetric modeling of the nuclear containment building has been often employed in practice to estimate structural behavior for the axisymmetric loadings, where the axisymmetric approximation is required for the actual non-axisymmetric tendon arrangements in the dome. In the preceding companion paper, some procedures are proposed for the domestic CANDU and KSNP type containments that can implement the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. In this paper, the proposed schemes are verified through some numerical examples comparing the results of the actual 3-dimensional model with those of some axisymmetric models. The results of the proposed axisymmetric analyses show relatively good agreements with the actual structural behavior especially for the CANDU type. Also, it is shown that proper level of the prestressing in a hoop direction plays an important role to predict the actual prestressing effect in the axisymmetric dome modeling. Finally, correction factors are discussed that can revise some approximations introduced in the derivations.
Since existing constitutive models developed for confined normal strength concrete overestimate ductility when they are applied to confined high strength concrete, these models cannot be directly applied to confined high strength concrete. In an effort to solve this problem, an accurate stress-strain relationship of the hihg strength concrete needs to be formulated by examining the confinement effects due to increase of the concrete strength. In this study, a constitutive model is developed to express the stress-strain relationship of confined high strength concrete by carrying out regression analysis of the main parameters affection strength and ductile behavior of reinforced high strength concrete columns. Twenty-five test specimens were chosen from the reported experimental studies in the literature. The experimental results of stress-strain relationships of show a good agreement with results of the stress-strain relationships of suggested high strength concrete, covering a strength range between 60 and 124 MPa.

An integrated finite element model composed of a boiler and its supporting steel structure for a 375-MW coal-fired power plant was developed. This study used the developed model for seismic analysis using SAP2000 software. For the complex superheaters, reheaters, economizers, and membrane walls of the boiler, which consisted of numerous tubes, a method of modeling them by the equivalent elements in the viewpoint of stiffness and/or inertia was proposed. In addition, a method of modeling for the connection between the boiler and steel structure was proposed. Many hangers that connect the boiler to the girders of a steel structure were transformed into equivalent hangers by decreasing the number. The displacements of the boiler stoppers on the buckstay and the posts of the steel structure were coupled by considering their interface condition. Static analysis under the self-loading condition for the developed integrated model was implemented, and the results of deformation indicated that the behavior of the steel members and the major components of the boiler were appropriate. In conclusion, the integrated model developed in this study can be used to evaluate the safety of the boiler and steel structure under seismic loads.

One commercial package for magnetic analysis was used to apply repulsive forces of permanent magnetics to bicycle cushion system. Reliabilities of finite element analysis were acquired by comparing with those of experimental measurements. Equivalent spring stiffnesses corresponding to various sizes of magnetics were implemented into the bicycle dynamic model with three degree of freedom. Input force caused at front and rear wheels due to road unevenness was considered in the dynamic model. Dynamic behaviors were observed in terms of vertical displacements of the rider and the front reach as well as pitching displacement of the mass center when the bicycle ran over half-triangular bump. The methodology suggested in this paper by the finite element analysis and numerical model will be an useful tool for more accurate prediction of cushion design for any vehicle system if magnetic forces are utilized.

In this paper, we proposed a numerical model based on moment-curvature, to evaluate the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) members subjected to blast loading. To consider the direct shear failure mode, we introduced a dimensionless spring element based on the empirical direct shear stress-slip relation. Based on the dynamic increase factor equations for materials, new dynamic increase factor equations were constructed in terms of the curvature rate for the section which could be directly applied to the moment-curvature relation. Additionally, equivalent bending stiffness was introduced in the plastic hinge region to consider the effect of bond-slip. To verify the validity of the proposed model, a comparative study was conducted against the experimental results, and the superiority of this numerical model was confirmed through comparison with the analytical results of the single-degree of freedom model. Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams were produced to evaluate the resistance of members against bending failure and direct shear failure, and additional parametric studies were conducted.

This study presents a finite element analysis method that can accurately evaluate the nonlinear behaviour of structures affected by shallow soft subsoils and the soil-structure interaction. A two-dimensional finite element model that consists of a structure and shallow soft subsoil was used. The finite element model was used for a nonlinear time domain analysis of the OpenSees program. A parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of soil shear velocities, earthquake input motions, soft soil depth, and soil-structure interaction. The result of the proposed nonlinear finite element analysis method was compared with the result of an existing frequency domain analysis method, which is frequently used for addressing nonlinear soil behavior. The result showed that the frequency domain analysis, which uses equivalent secant soil stiffness and does not address the soil-structure interaction, significantly overestimated the response of the structures with short dynamic periods. The effect of the soil-structure interaction on the response spectrum did not significantly vary with the foundation dimensions and structure mass.

While transforming the inelastic system into the equivalent elastic one gives an advantage of simpler analysis, the actual inelastic behavior of the system is hardly modeled in the capacity spectrum method (CSM). Therefore, the accuracy of CSM depends on the precise estimation of equivalent period and damping ratio as well as the modification of the elastic response spectrum and the corresponding demand spectrum. In this paper, the effect of demand spectrums on the accuracy of CSM is evaluated. First, the response reduction factors provided in ATC-40 and Euro Code are evaluated. Numerical analysis results indicated that the acceleration responses obtained using the factor of Euro Code are closer to the actual response than those obtained using the factors of ATC-40. Next, the accuracy of CSM is evaluated constructing the demand spectrum using the absolute acceleration responses and pseudo acceleration responses. The results obtained using the absolute acceleration responses were found to be generally larger than those obtained using the pseudo ones. Since CSM often underestimates the response, the use of absolute acceleration response gives the response relatively closer to the exact ones. However, the difference becomes negligible as the hardening ratio and the yield strength ratio become larger.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is powerful tool for determining properties of samples based on interactions between the sample surface and an approaching probe tip. In this study, we modeled the interactions between the sample and the tip of the AFM microcantilever as a single nonlinear spring with an equivalent stiffness element and simulated the dynamic behaviors of the AFM microcantilevers using the finite element method (FEM) and ANSYS software. With the simulation results, we analyzed the complex dynamic responses of the AFM cantilever using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In addition, we compared the simulation and experimental results using the same method. Consequently, we suggest an effective method to express the interaction between the tip and sample, and we confirm that the influence of the higher order model due to the interaction between the tip and sample is increased.

In this paper, the comparisons between field measurments and numerical results ware performed for the settlements, lateral displacement in Jinwol interchange works on the Honam express way whose site was improved by sand drain for the constructions of over bridges, piers and abutments. The computer program was developed by coupling Biot's equation with Sekiguchi's elasto-viscoplastic model under plane strain conditions. Steel pipe piles for piers were replaced into the equivalent steel sheet pile wall. The characteristics of behavior for both the soil foundations and the sheet piles wall were investigated with the variation of axial force on the wall, rigidity of the wall, supported condition of sheet pile into hard strata and the location of anchored point.

In a practical engineering, the equivalent static analysis (E.S.A) and the response spectrum analysis (R.S.A) are generally used for the seismic analysis. The base shears obtained from the E.S.A are invariable no matter how the principal axes of building structures are specified on an analysis program while those from the R.S.A are variable. Accordingly, the designed member size may be changed by how an engineer specify the principal axes of a structure when the R.S.A is used. Moreover, the base shears in the normal direction to the excitation axis are sometimes produced even when an engineer performs a response spectrum analysis in only one direction. This tendency makes the base shear, which is used to calculate the scale-up factor, relatively small. Therefore the scale-up factor becomes larger and it results in uneconomical member sizes. To overcome these disadvantages of the R.S.A, an alternative has been proposed in this study. Three types of example structures were adapted in this study, i.e. bi-direction symmetric structure, one-direction antisymmetric structure and bi-direction antisymmetric structure. The seismic analyses were performed by rotating the principal axes of the example structures with respect to the global coordinate system. The design member forces calculated with the scale-up factor used in the practice were compared with those obtained by using the scale-up factor proposed in this study. It can be seen from this study that the proposed method for the scale-up factor can provide reliable and economical results regardless of the orientation of the principal axes of the structures.
